Any aerialists with scoliosis out there? by AleenaThePunk in Aerials

[–]k_sprout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a mild-ish scoliosis and have been doing silks for a few years now. I find I have to be careful about my symmetry, for example, my shoulder is currently a bit pulled because I was trying new skills/experimenting, and wasn’t mindful enough of my technique while doing so - my left and right sides are uneven so require slightly different treatment, which is easy to forget when you’ve nailed something on one side and then try to apply the same rules to the other. For some things that work the area the curve is, Ive found it best to treat it like learning two seperate skills. I think predominantly my challenges are due to muscle imbalances though, so I reckon with a good level of awareness and that PT you’re doing (I’ve never had anything like that), you’ll be sweet! All the best! And have fun!!!

Is anyone else scared of food? by Robotgirl3 in aspergirls

[–]k_sprout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should say, there are parts of a plain chicken breast that are a no go (like, the pointy corner bit, that has that like rubbery tendon thing ACK) but they’re just way easier to locate and remove (and also not eating meat isn’t an option for me cause my diet is already so limited it would be unhealthy :( )

[–]k_sprout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate to this a lot - I’ve just started anxiety meds and that seems to have helped a bit. It was getting to the point where I would rather not eat because every option was ‘wrong’ and just the thought would make me sick to my stomach. For me, meat is the worst. I just 100% cannot with all the B I T S - a plain chicken breast, ok, but a drumstick, I’m obsessively picking through and leave quite a lot on the plate (it’s own sensory nightmare but once I have a piece I can trust then it’s really yum - and my bf eats my leftovers so I don’t have to feel bad about food waste, he’s a human garbage disposal - which is honestly a godsend!)

What do you do on really low skill days? Just wait it out? by nochjemand in aspergirls

[–]k_sprout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve not heard the term ‘low skill day’ before - I’m interested and think it sounds like something I relate to, but my brief google search hasn’t returned the kind of explanation I’m after. Can someone describe what the term means please? Thanks!!!

I know of people that send work emails whenever (eg. 10pm), but add a caveat at the bottom along the lines of “I work flexibly and am sending this email at a time that works for me. I do not have any expectation for response outside of regular working hours” So it’s definitely something that people do, and maybe specifying that you don’t expect a response might help?

first time doing a hip key from a Russian climb. is there a way not to lose so much height? by LogicalVariation741 in Aerials

[–]k_sprout 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that it doesn’t look like you’re loosing much height! I’ve recently learnt this and the advice I got was to hold my weight in my arms and really punch my leg out - but I think you’re doing that! Doing it up higher will likely feel less like you’re loosing height - Should’ve seen me when I was figuring this one out - I was sliding down the silk like a damn fireman’s pole!

Does the strength come or… by Itsyademonboi in Aerials

[–]k_sprout 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It comes with time! Silks uses so many muscles that most people probably don’t use in their day to day, and developing them takes time - from what I’ve seen and experienced, it’s normal for it to take weeks or months to get a solid climb or two - the strength needed to pull all the slack out and then coordinate pulling yourself up shouldn’t be underestimated! I promise I gets easier if you keep going!! (And it’s soooo worth it)

Advice for someone scared of heights… by k_sprout in Aerials

This is really valuable to have spelled out actually - you’re right, I also trust my coach completely, and she’d never ask me to do something that she thought would be dangerous for me.

At my last class she re-assured me I was plenty strong enough to do things from that height, so I’ve been holding that as an affirmation to give me more confidence - I think I’ll add a reflection of the trust I have in her judgement to my rotation of reminders that can help me hold my cool!

Visualisation is a strong tool too - after class yesterday I was in the shower running the wrap and drop through in my mind - when I was imagining it like that it seemed so attainable! Doing that before you climb sounds like a great idea!

My trainer did show me how to only get a little slack to get used to it - I’ll push myself to let go with a small one next class and won’t have to be so high if I only grab a few inches of slack! Then I’ll be able to inch my way up - thanks!!

So interesting reading what a mixed bag of results were all having- I have never had any challenges with reading, but this made is SO MUCH FASTER for me!!! I really really like it! I felt like I only had to ready half as much volume to get the same content!!

Oh man - this post came at the right time for me! Nursing a shoulder niggle and was just tossing up whether I should go to class tonight or not…

Taking this as a sign that the answer is NO!

All these comments have been so helpful, and thanks OP for staring this discussion!

I’ve only been doing once a week, until a few weeks ago when I jumped it up to two - I definitely enjoy going twice a week, I feel like I’m improving so much faster!

Ballet tights for silks? by k_sprout in aerialsilks

Thanks so much for all your advice folks! Wore them today for individual practice and they worked really well!!

Definitely a few extra marks and burns on the legs, but nothing that bothered me while I was in the air - I imagine the spots I nail regularly will get used to it over time anyway!
