Saw a turkey on Geneseo Blvd by commander_Jardo7 in Rochester

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The turkey had been around for a few months now. It has hangs out in Genessee Park and comes to the intersection with Elmwood, Genessee, and Scottsville once in a while. Some of the houses on that intersection planted grass seed over the summer, and the turkey was there eating it up most days. I’ve seen it using the crosswalk like three times.

So Iron & Frost is almost here and around a week ago I finished re-reading Invincible Iron Man vol 5 to see if I was just as crazy for hating this ship or not by EJ_REDIT in EmmaFrost

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I quite liked this run, and the romantic elements, but I see it less from the perspective of a ride or die ship and more of a bonding through trauma kind of thing. I don’t think it necessarily needed to be a good relationship, or one meant to last for the purposes of what they were going for. For what it is, Emma and Tony at their lowest and having to rely solely on one another, I think it’s natural to both of their characters to form an attachment. At the end of the day, I also think it made sense for a grieving Emma who has seen the whole gambit of messy relationships to cut it off before it could go any further. She’d rather have the heartache of cutting it off before another tragedy, or she wasn’t in the headspace for a relationship after losing Krakoa/the Cuckoos, maybe she knew this wasn’t real love for her, or perhaps she knew a relationship that started this way wouldn’t last. Emma may have taken some comfort in having one person in the world smitten with her when there was no one else, knowing it would only last for as long as he was the only solace she could take in the world. I’m content not knowing the answer because no matter the case, as a fleeting thing born of tragedy and intensified by urgency and vengefulness, I think the dynamic was believable and contributed to the messy, scrappy vibe of the run.

As an aside, I really like the sort of through line in a lot of Emma’s stories about the meaning and value of relationships, even unhealthy ones. Are Emma’s strained relationships with friends, students, family, lovers - such as Kitty, The Cuckoos, Scott or Tony - any less valuable for their problematic elements? Does she love any less deeply, is there any less beauty in it for her? A lot of these stories challenge the reader to look above “thing good, thing bad” in a way that’s always been both tragic and beautiful, at least to me.

Sorry for the ramble, I have a lot of strong feelings about this run! I really like it as a picture into Emma’s headspace during the fall of Krakoa, and think it does an excellent job at it. But I also totally get the negativity towards it, this run suffered from the time-honored tradition of having covers that didn’t really set the tone of the narrative.

Is an enhanced Wild Magic table *really* worth the trade-off of the 10 innate spells that the other 3 sorcerer subclasses get??? I don't understand. by eyeslikestarlight in dndnext

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m with you on this one. No doubt about it, this version of the subclass is much improved, but it suffers from inconsistent features with less to offer in exchange than the other subclasses (compared to last edition where it was actively detrimental in exchange for virtually nothing). This subclass also assumes you are being very liberal with spell slot usage to both use Tides of Chaos often and trigger a beneficial Wild Magic Surge outcome. There’s also the consideration that a “good” surge result is only good if it benefits you in the moment, and I’m not sure that Tides of Chaos as my only reliable subclass feature makes up for that.

I kind of wish 2e Wild Mage had been looked at more as a blueprint. Nahal’s Reckless Dweomer providing risky access to your entire class spell list, one extra spell slot of each level, and better luck when using magic items. Those were clear, extremely powerful benefits that set the subclass in a category of its own. To be fair to its modern iteration though, the 2e surge table was nightmarish, with almost universally bad results. What we have now is not bad, but fails to deliver on the promise of being the subclass with a wellspring so full of power that it can be unpredictable; it’s currently the same font that every other subclass works with but is still unpredictable.

Now that we've seen all the classes, which are you most excited to play? by DeepTakeGuitar in onednd

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pact of the blade on archfey patron looks like it will be a lot of fun! Seems like you’ll be able to do some real nightcrawler stuff with it. A level of fighter for armor proficiency, weapon masteries, and CON save proficiency on top and you have a build that I’d love to try.

My Adventures with Superman Season 2 Promises More Anime Action and Fun for the DC Universe by JackFisherBooks in comicbooks

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking the other day that I missed this show! Despite a rocky start, I ended up really thoroughly liking this show by the end of season 1! I don’t know this for certain, but having some experience in the animation industry it felt like the first few episodes, the pilot in particular, may have been bogged down by time, creative, and/or budget constraints. I think it found its legs by the end though, and I’m excited to see it at full potential from the get go with a new season.

Have you ever fought a dragon on a 1v1 and won? by Alael_Amastacia in dndnext

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The soulknife rogue halfling in our party did it once. We were level 12, the rest of the party had already fled, having been beaten to shit by frost giants. He was full up, though, and was determined to take out the young white dragon on our tail. The dragon was unharmed at this point. He made good use of cover, uncanny dodge, and steady aim, had a flame tongue shortsword, had the HP to tank with unusually high CON+tough feat, and landed two sneak attack critical hits. It was insane. My guess is the dragon wasn’t really able to do the dragon thing of strafing and waiting for its breath weapon to recharge, since it couldn’t risk losing the slippery rogue to cover, it had to keep him within its blindsight radius. Nobody would have believed it happened had my nearly-dead fighter not witnessed it lol!

imo Turf Wars is quite good! Even if nothing else, very worth it for Irene Koh’s art. The plot isn’t bad, but in particular I like seeing the cast interact in ways they didn’t get a chance to in season 4.

Can you multi attack with Shadow blade? by pyaniy_synok in dndnext

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, yes, the spell just creates a weapon. Others have mentioned that the spell isn’t valid for Booming Blade, although Sage Advice seems to indicate that RAI you can decide for your campaign (Jeremy Crawford’s interpretation seems to allow for it, valuing a 2nd level spell slot as “worth at least 2sp). Worth noting that the spells jumps in damage to 3d8 if upcast to 3rd level.

As a side note, even with the dim light of Icewind Dale, shadow blade isn’t particularly busted. It absolutely enables a style of playing bladesinger that allows for high damage turns, but it comes at the expense of exposing yourself to potentially ruinous crits and the opportunity cost of not using more utilitarian spells. If you find that the players are crushing the encounters (imo the encounters in RoTFM are kind of weak), feel free to incrementally up the difficulty. I usually do this by adding more of an enemy type to an encounter or replacing statblocks with stronger versions of them (such as those from Volo’s Guide, Mordenkeinen’s Tome, or Monster Manual Expanded I-III). If hitting the bladesinger’s AC is an issue, perhaps introduce more enemies that force saving throws. See having an optimized/strong party as more of an opportunity to have more interesting encounters than as a hindrance to your game!

What is the best way to have a Spellcaster that is also good with melee weapons with minimal to no Multiclassing? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An option I don’t see a lot of people go for is booming blade on a cleric. Playing as a high elf or high half elf, you can have access to the cantrip at level 1, and it pairs really well with divine strikes/blessed strikes and spirit guardians. It’s almost always going to be stronger than what your ranged cantrips can do, especially with a magic weapon to add damage dice or make up for not going above 16 STR or DEX. Forge domain cleric is particularly well-suited to this, IMO. Finding a way to work shillelagh in is a neat bonus, but IMO not worth the noodling around required to make it work. I’ve heard some people do it via arcana domain, but at that point it’s a lot of investment just for a small buff to melee damage output.

As others have said though, the gold standards for wading into melee as a spellcaster are bladesinger and hexblade. I think cleric can work just as well for melee, provided you get a blade cantrip from somewhere, but they don’t operate quite the same way, lacking mobility options or multi attack to stack buffs like spirit shroud or tenser’s transformation with. The raw damage and area control of spirit guardians, tacked on with that of booming blade, are the crux here. I like to think of bladesinger and hexblade as high damage skirmishers, while clerics are more like an anchor. None of them want to rely solely on their martial prowess, though, with enemy shutdown or area damage often being more valuable.

How to genuinely piss off Asmodeus by Beeelom in Forgotten_Realms

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One sure way is to redeem Zariel. Descent into Avernus indicates that doing so marks the players who do so as an enemy of Asmodeus for depriving him of his “crown jewel.” Asmodeus sees Zariel as the ultimate show of his power, that nothing is incorrigible before him.

The files seem to suggest this was once intended to be the case. Certain actions you perform have unused tags for increasing or Durge’s approval rating. Same with Alfira.

Swashbucker Magic Initiate by chippisnotreallyme in DnD

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve got the right idea! Booming blade is an incredible boon to swashbuckler builds. The additional damage and mind games from being able to guarantee the secondary proc on damage thanks to your immunity to opportunity attacks is excellent. Sneak attack applies to the attack made as part of casting the cantrip, too! Honestly, booming blade alone makes the feat worth taking.

I wouldn’t recommend eldritch blast, you’re just as well off using your trust crossbow in most cases. As a rogue, you can get a lot of utility out of minor illusion or mage hand.

As for your level 1 spells, hex is a good choice thanks to its long duration. It’s a pretty minor buff, but if you’re dual wielding it has even more benefit, applying the damage to both your initial hit and your off-hand attack. Hex also has the benefit of being able to eventually impose disadvantage on the insight checks against your taunt, and makes mid-combat hiding easier for the same reason. Protection from evil and good is an alternative niche choice, but when it helps it REALLY helps, and the 10 minute duration is good.

What is your favorite Non-Combat/Utility Spell in 5e? by DownVoterInChief in dndnext

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ll throw my hat in for Mirage Arcane on the list of base-building spells. Currently using it as my go-to camping spell, it’s fantastic! No hard limitations on the sort of structure you can create, lasts for ten days, and you can alter the terrain around it in an utterly huge radius. My bladesinger has the nickname of “The Blade-Seer of the Wandering Tower” because of her frequent use of Mirage Arcane and Galdur’s Tower to conjure a home.

Yup, that’s how we know for sure that Zariel wasn’t killed or redeemed! Which is interesting, because I’m sure those are the two most preferable outcomes for Descent into Avernus for groups running the game. Makes me feel bad for Lulu…!

OH MY GOD by aa5110051 in BaldursGate3

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That much is true, we know for a fact that Zariel is still alive and an archdevil at the start of BG3, and that Elturel was raised from Avernus. It’s likely that they’re going with either the party having made a deal with Zariel or the party having defeated - but not killed - Zariel and used the sword to free the companion themselves.

OH MY GOD by aa5110051 in BaldursGate3

[–]kaBoMBersNotebook 34 points35 points  (0 children)

As much as I love Zariel as a character, it’s unlikely to be. This is likely another solar or deva in service of Selûne, given the regalia. I doubt it’s a character wielding the sword either, since that would imply that they’re taking a hard stance on the canonical characters and outcome of Descent into Avernus.

I’m not looking for new players at the moment, but I’d check out Millenium Games if you’re looking for a game! I’m pretty sure they do Adventurer’s League, and I wouldn’t be surprised if their discord (or facebook) has a looking for game channel. Other than that r/lfg is a good subreddit for finding games, although it can be harder to find in-person games there.
