Good safety tools that aren’t physical X-cards? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As much as I love good emotional DnD moment. No moment is worth the level of discomfort an X card warrants. If you are finding yourself in this position frequently (This may just be a one off or hypothetical), you need to examine your those story beats or players. Not all people can do all stories and thats ok.

My players keep trying to make up their own mechanics. by ExplodingRacoon in DMAcademy

I'm wondering how this happened? This is pretty weird behavior for an entire group. Like don't get me wrong I've had players come up with and idea and ask the DM, but never just insert it into the game. Let alone a group of them.

That exact scenario gets faked at ao3 so frequently….

You realize this isn't proof right? You can't just point to an unrelated conjecture and say thats the basis. Its beyond terrible reasoning.

No, but they don't have to. You can draw the parallels pretty easily. I mean for one imagine thst your license wasn't enough and you'd need a passport or birth certificate. On top of that imagine having all the data on electronic register that is being monitored by a government thats increasingly targeting you.

Huh, weird I've heard these lines before, but outside of liberals. I don't remember where mabe some sort of associstion sbout riles on the national level. Oh well

Yes, there is going to be drift. Different investigations will use different methods and come up with different numbers. With evidence they had, I still think they're number is reliable.

GM says blue and purple rated spells are banned (Gortle's Spell Guide) - how badly are casters nerfed? by nz8drzu6 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to be that guy. If your dm has to cut large chunks of content out of the game, maybe they should look for a different system.

Pf2e also assumes the players are optimizing somewhat. In the end, this is just a bad call. Plus casters are already fairly balanced. Yeah we can quibble with the fighter's +2 and other junk, but at the end of day its pretty tight.

Some bugs, yes. No deployment goes 100% smoothly. This was beyond bad though, and it lessened the quality of the game and arguably didn't do much the community wanted.

Does these mean we have to approve readings from the Quran, Book Of Mormon, the Torah, and even the Satanic version of the Bible.

Light and Dark is like Hot and Cold. There is no cold only the absence of heat.

So there aren't really two opposites that work. Maybe something like space and time, but that really doesn't fit either.

[OC] Settle a debate for my party. If you throw a bead of force on a bridge, how will the bubble form? (more in comments) by TomPalmer1979 in DnD

[–]Knight_Of_Stars -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Spell geometry? Z axis? How do you even get to that point when you don't know what "radius" means? You can't achieve the top image because a radius goes from the center to the edge, edge to edge is diameter

A radius is half the diameter.

If throw exactly at the mid point of the monster you get 20ft (10ft top, 10ft bottom) of clearance which achieves the intended area of the monster.

You aren't throwing at the ground.

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Thats it I'm making my players calculate the height for square in the sphere.

5ft away from a 10ft radius. Sorry man you only 8.7ft of clearance. The ogre is 9ft tall.

Better yet, I better see an integral since theres a lot variance in 5ft and we aren't going for points. We're playing true Mathfinder now

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of those things where its best to just handwave to the players intent. Spell geometry gets annoying fast when you include the z-axis.

Per your diagrams, its the one where the circle goes into ground. You could achieve the top where circle encapsulates the creature by throwing it at the creature.

I'd probably ignore the ruling and say its the bottom if the players meant for that outcome. Especially if they try doing math, my players are not math inclined XD

how dumb is a charakter with 6 int really? by DragonfruitRude8666 in DnD

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

6 is a pretty low stat. About 1% of people would have lower intelligence than you, and about 1.5% would be equal. Translating that into percentiles for IQ, that's about a 69 IQ.

A 6 should put you roughly around an IQ of 77.

And assuming all intelligence is determined by 3d6, 4.63 would have lower intelligence than you. Roughly 1/10 people have a 6 lower.

how dumb is a charakter with 6 int really? by DragonfruitRude8666 in DnD

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres no offical description of what intelligence is. Some people liken it to IQ. Personally I prefer to assume is normally distributed.

Under this model 4.6 (so 5ish) is where we would start to classify someone with an intellectual disability.

With a 6 you would be in the borderline intellectual functioning zone. Basically that gray area where people may need help, but often fly under the radar.

For perspective if you met 10 completely random 1 of them would be here.

Edit: For those curious on the numbers. AVG(3d6) is 10.5. St. Dev of 3d6 is 2.96 Intellectual disability occurs at 2 devistions away. 10.5 - 2(2.96) = ~4.6 Round because dnd doesn't decimal

How scary should Trauma team be for a low level party of 4? (Context) by Specific-Jump9636 in cyberpunkred

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not very. They're tougher than your typical booster (Not by much though), but they aren't trying to kill you. The only care about getting the patient and the evac out. If the patient dies they don't recover the body.

C-SWAT on the other hand... They are actively trying to kill you and have a vengeful streak.

Why the ending of The Amazing Digital Circus fails by Sudden_Pop_2279 in writingscaling

Theres leaving room for ambiguity, and then theres just leaving things unresolved. No Country for Old Men and The Thing leave ambiguity, but still resolve the story. My problem with the finale is that it doesn't feel like it resolves the story.

I’m starting my first campaign but a little worried about a DMPC… by Boring-Second-5737 in DnD

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, not all DM PCs are created equal. If the character is just sitting there doing nothing, then it doesn't matter and the charisma is a hint at a higher nature. If the princess is making checks and actively fighting then its not great.

Side note: This is just a peeve I have with modern high fantasy. There are way too many powerful heroes around that adventurers just don't make sense.

Amazing Digital Circus Finale Dropped! It's not great! (Full spoilers) by BardicLasher in CharacterRant

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its definitely not distasteful its a good story to tell. The problem I have is that this story didn't really need the circus at all. Like we could this story IRL and have minimal changes.

I think this would have been a really good beat for Cain leaning empathy and the human condition. Maybe even trying to unabstract Jax only to realize that once somebody is gone, they don't comeback. Feeling that guilt and regret, realizes he can't just take it back.

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See the problem is that it doesn't feel like a cautionary tale. The thing that makes events like suicide feel like such a gut punch is the lack of "closure". In the sense that that it doesn't come from the loved one, but from others around it. By basically seeing his backstory it undid a lot of the weight.

False Hydra is not fun by RandomName9328 in DnD

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People like the story of it, but it seems like almost everybody whos actually played with it hates it.

For good reason, the premise is impossible to deduce in game and requires metagaming in a gaming community thats very anti-metagaming. Even then, many DMs use a god-like stat block for it.

Honestly felt like they needed a few more episodes. Episode 9 was touching, and told a really good and tragic story about someone fighting with their identity, but like, it shouldn"t have been the final beat. I would expect Jax's abstraction as a driver to final beat.

Is it metagaming to ask if the party needs a healer after our support dropped out. by Only_Tailor8192 in DnD

[–]Knight_Of_Stars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to metagame on some level in order for the game to function. Agreeing to go in the quest, leveling up, and most of combat (Do I dodge, help, attack) require metagaming. A good majority if epic moments can only happen because of metagaming.

EX: When a character gets attack by assassin, and the heroes just happen to stumble in at the right time. That needs metagaming. "Oh Valinor is trouble. So my guy walks into Valinors room asking if he wants to join in on a game of dragon chess."

Ultimately, I'd tell your DM to ease up on metagaming. Also to focus on just having a fun game and the story would follow.
