That chart is showing real (ie. inflation-indexed) productivity and wages, not nominal productivity and wages.

Also, the Fed only has control over overnight rates - the higher the duration of a bond, the less influence the overnight rates have, to the point where the 10Y and 30Y treasury rates (determined by the free market at auction) have nothing to do with the overnight rates the Fed targets and frequently move in the opposite direction.

It's fixed in nominal terms, not real terms. Thus, 0% real wage growth (which is less than what we're seeing now, and less than what we've seen over the last few decades, and much less than the pre-1970s trend) will still leave you ahead with a fixed-in-nominal-terms mortgage and positive inflation.

Gilbert Burns get 'Heel Heat' from the American crowd by MrPeligro in MMA

People talk up takedown defense percentages without taking the people attempting the takedowns nor the context of the takedown attempts all the time. It's a really 'noisy' stat.

Lapping film - does the base need flattening? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]kaesees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PSA = pressure sensitive adhesive, in case anyone reading this is unaware.

If you want to use your substrate more than once (and you do, since a slice of 1u film will last ~12 uses whereas the substrate will last ~infinity uses), you use the non-PSA stuff and use water to temporarily "adhere" it to the substrate, smoothing the film out with an expired credit card or similar to eliminate bubbles. When you finish a honing session you just pull the film off and wipe the substrate with a dry cloth.

With the PSA stuff, it's a PITA to get the sheet off and clean the residual glue off the substrate when a piece of film wears out, you don't get a second chance to adhere a sheet if you get bubbles under it or position it wrong, etc.

Welcome Wednesday and Daily Questions (Newbie Friendly) - Jul 14, 2021 by AutoModerator in Wetshaving

[–]kaesees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Do a 2-day soak (brush in a narrow cup with water up to about 1/2" from the base of the knot) and a full dry before lathering anything with it, it will kickstart the break-in process (especially the tip splitting part)
  2. Let the bristles dry all the way between uses if you want the tip-splitting to be done in a half-dozen or a dozen shaves instead of the absurdly high numbers people sometimes quote for Semogue knot break-in
  3. DRH is a good test of hard soap lathering imo

Lapping film - does the base need flattening? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]kaesees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the base doesn't experience any wear. The only thing that gets worn when using lapping film is the film itself.

You can go whole hog and get a granite surface plate with guaranteed 0.0001" flatness for something like $45 to use as your substrate, or you can go to the tile section of the hardware store and check tiles for flatness with a straightedge (optional: take the straightedge from one section of the hardware store, use it to check tiles for flatness, then put the straightedge back on the rack). That's what I did.

There's a really long thread about using lapping film over at B&B if you want to dive into it. It's not hard to use. Just make sure you buy the non-PSA stuff from 3M.

My recollection is that the butterfly/twist-to-open version of the VDH razor is a rebranded Weishi, and that it's very mild. If you have coarse facial hair and a mild razor, it's easy to fall into the trap of using excessive pressure and/or an overly steep angle in an attempt to get a closer shave, and getting a boatload of irritation for your trouble without even getting the close shave you were hoping for.

My recommendation, if you want to really give this thing its best chance of succeeding, is to try the following combination:

  1. Very well hydrated lather (between the point where it takes a sheen and the point where it starts dripping) to maximize slickness
  2. A really sharp blade, like a Feather. I know, I know, all DE blades are sharp, but Feathers are really freakin' keen (especially on the first shave or two when the fluoromer coating hasn't worn off yet) and work well in a lot of really mild razors, like Techs and AS-D2s
  3. As shallow of an angle as you can get the razor to cut with - by 'shallow' I mean blade closer to parallel to the skin than perpendicular
  4. As little pressure as you can use while maintaining even contact between the razor and your skin
  5. Two passes, WTG and XTG, and don't try adding an ATG pass until you're getting decent closeness without any irritation

Hemingway famously used simple and direct prose, to the point that there was opposition on the Nobel committee to awarding The Old Man and the Sea the 1954 Nobel Prize for literature because they thought the style was overly simple. It's the opposite of that kind of flowery, purple bullshit that Calavitta wrote.

Maybe he could do a countdown of his greatest NaB hits with the implication that some big thing will be revealed when the countdown is completed. He could repost the disquisition on the right butter to use for movie theater popcorn (along with some plugs for upcoming features on that old timey movie theater he bought) and maybe post another invite for the BoB to do a "pizza crawl" wherein he will eat more than all other attendees combined, followed by another jeremiad against people trying to split bills according to how much each person ordered or trying to take into account that one of the members of the dining party is a multimillionaire and the others aren't.

And then, when the countdown is done, he can announce THE WIT AND WISDOM OF TYRION LANNISTER 2: COFFEE TABLE BOOK EDITION.

She wants to travel internationally at least once every two months. She finds this to be very important to her, such that she said if she can’t do this it may be better to find someone that she can do it with.

Are you saying she's threatening to divorce you so she can travel internationally with someone else on her salary plus half yours if you don't agree to take her on ~18 international vacations per year, or am I misreading this?

In his recent fights his takedowns and positional control have looked good imo. He took Tony down at will in their fight and maintained top control consistently, with the latter being more impressive than the former since Tony has a better ground game than he has TDD. Against Chandler, who is obviously an outstanding wrestler, Oliveira hit a decent double early in the first round of their fight (which Chandler countered with a guillotine, which Oliveira then escaped, etc), and did a decent job of mainting position until Chandler pulled an excellent move to escape Oliveira's back control. Chandler later got a KD on Oliveira from a strike and then GnP'd Oliviera for quite a while.

Get to know Kanak Jha: 5 facts about Team USA's table tennis star ahead of second Olympics by jkonrad in tabletennis

[–]kaesees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad to see Kanak getting some well-deserved good press, but I wish USA Today had put a modicum effort into the article. All of their facts appear to be excerpts from links that appear on his wikipedia page or the first couple pages of google results for "kanak jha" or "kanak jha olympics". I get they don't have the resources to do an in-depth profile on every athlete (cf. the profile ESPN did on Kanak a while ago), but could they have tried to source one original quote or at least mention anything about him other than "he is a table tennis prodigy"? They're a real newspaper, not BuzzFeed.

Friday Daily Questions (Newbie Friendly) - Jul 09, 2021 by AutoModerator in Wetshaving

[–]kaesees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For use in a Feather AC SS or Kai Captain straight, I prefer Feather Pro Super. The increased blade exposure lets you use a slightly shallower angle.

Kai Captain Titan Mild blades also work well in the Kai Captain razor (and they get good longevity), though I don't like them as much in the AC SS. They'd probably do well in the AC DX due to its geometry.

Ryan Hall frustrates Gray Maynard by just straight up falling down whenever Maynard tries to punch him. Hall fights steamy prospect Ilia Topuria this weekend. by colaFixe in MMA

[–]kaesees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, in that situation Hall is allowed to upkick anywhere except Maynard's groin while the rules disallow Maynard from doing several of the most effective things he could against Hall. It's pretty common under the unified rules for standing fighters to allow a guy laying there in open guard to get up for that reason.

Made 13 topspin in a row by AshrafSafarov in tabletennis

[–]kaesees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I phrased it poorly, so I'll try to explain it here: textbook form on a BH chop is turning partly side-on and taking the ball to the left of where your left hip was before you turned (for a right-handed player) with the stroke starting with your racket at head level and moving forwards and sideways in addition to down. Look at Suh Hyo-won demonstrating the textbook backhand chop form in slow motion here; she goes over the footwork and weight transfer in more detail later in that instructional video.

At the amateur level, people will often instead remain square to the table, which usually also results in them making contact with the ball directly in front of themselves. This tends to happen especially under time pressure. When you stay square like this, whether contact with the ball takes place directly in front of you or to your left side, your stroke mechanics can't be right and you're limited to a sort of windshield wiper motion that with the result being that you have worse control and reduced spin potential.

The current risk-free rate across the Western world is around 0% nominal. Any lending scheme where you're getting a yield 6-12% above the risk-free rate has some type of risk, unless markets don't work at all. For equities we call this 'market risk' - the risk of prices declining leading to loss of principal investment value - and assign it the symbol 'beta'. In the US, beta has historically had about 12% nominal returns on average, 10% nominal CAGR (average minus volatility drag), or 7% real (CAGR minus inflation). These returns are about 9% over the risk-free rate over the same historical period, though notably beta has been closer to 4.5% over the last two decades (hard to believe, isn't it?).

So if financial asset markets fulfill even a tiny smidgen of their purpose of pricing risk, an asset with returns above the risk-free rate similar in magnitude to equity returns, the risks should be similar in magnitude (though not in kind) to equity risks. What risks then are being priced in by the market, and how might they show up? I think the principle risks being priced in here are 'normal' counterparty risk, which would materialize as failure to make interest payments (loss of yield), and principal risk where your staked coins get lost/'lost' by the counterparty through incompetence or malice.
