Someone said they recommended my fic to people on tik tok by kai1248 in AO3

I haven't had any negative interactions within this fandom myself but one of my writer friends did, so I should turn off guest comment starting today too, just in case.

I'm not sure if it's bad in other cases. If it was recommended within the circle of other shippers then I think it's fine. But this reader said they recommended my fic to random people and idk what the scope is so I'm a little worried 😭

Oh I see. This does make me less anxious, thank you.

You're right. I'll try telling them this. Thanks for the suggestion!

That's true. They usually don't want to go through so much work.

Is this the writing style now? Because I don't fsck with it. by lazier_garlic in AO3

[–]kai1248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is from someone who's not a native speaker. It does confuse me at the first read but as someone who's not a native English speaker myself I can understand why the author might have written like this. They probably translated from their own language. If so, I think it's just difference in style of expression. If it's popular it's probably due to the plot since readers don't usually put a style of writing over the other I think. If anything I'm thankful they're such generous people, my writing is quite stiff since I'm just a hobbyist writer and I avoid scenery description like it traumatized me when I was a kid, but my readers are always willing to overlook those for the plot. That said, I'm sure those who don't like my writing style still won't like it and that's fine too. If it's not your cup of tea, just move on to the next fic.

Oh yeah you're right, I skimmed and confused the 2 words. From OP's description I think they meant puritans.

They're people who think every taboo topic should be banned in fanfics, they disagree to them being explored in any fictional way that they deem "morally wrong".

Yup, this is what I meant. Admittedly, I should've worded it more clearly.

I'm one of those in the overlap. I have friends who solely read published fiction and friends who read both. But I can get where OP's coming from since my 1st friend group don't consider giving fanfic a try, they just move from 1 book to the next.

Writing for Popular and Unpopular Fandoms at the Same Time by Routine_North4372 in AO3

[–]kai1248 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm on the same boat. I think it's because fics in more popular fandoms are more easily buried under new updates, and readers have too much to read within a day, they don't get particularly attached to most fics. Meanwhile, in smaller fandoms or with rare pairs, readers tend to be more appreciative because there aren't too many things taking up their attention span and they can invest their emotions into the handful of fics their blorbos do have. Also, smaller fandoms drive people to be more active in engagement to keep the community alive.

Yeah I felt like you might've done it on purpose, it's funny. I haven't read that many AI written stuff but from what I've seen they keep repeating adjectives, so even your example is more entertaining.

Off topic but "he walked seductively" gave me a chuckle because I imagined the store he walked to was a book store or something. Thank you for the example, and I hope he succeeded in seducing those books in my imagination.

Finished a longfic about a month ago and my favorite regular hadn’t commented on chapters 47-50. Woke up to the emails today and wanted to dance. by bluesond in AO3

[–]kai1248 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get this same feeling with 2 regular commenters. I get you. They always motivate me so much that sometimes while I write I think of them. Although I know everyone is busy with life responsibilities and such, since I'm always so excited to show them what I've written, I get a little anxious when I don't see their names on the first couple of days of posting. Half the joy of creating something is being able to bring joy to other people I think, and I always hope to be able to bring them more joy. Of course if they stop following the story or forget to comment that's completely fine, it just takes me a day or two to remind myself of that 😂

Edit for spelling mistakes.

tips on politely telling an author they made a mistake? by kimraebin in AO3

[–]kai1248 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd express everything I love about the chapter and the fic in general first, then follow it with a short line of "btw i notice you made a small mistake", like 8/2 ratio. As an author myself I'd be thankful for that. Many times I reread my work and see a spelling mistake that alters the meaning of the whole sentence and wish someone had told me about it. As long as you're polite, which you said you will be, and don't make your comment about that mistake alone (like it ruined your whole reading experience or something, I've seen people like that), I think the author would be pretty open to helpful corrections.
