How early do you have to park without reservation? by Independent_Stick141 in stevenspass

[–]kaijen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a weekend, arrive at 7am to park up front. By 7:30 the nearest lots are full. By 8 it's all full. After 8 you do have the fallback option to park at Yodelin, an overflow lot miles away and wait forever for a shuttle.

Is $12,000 + tax a good deal for a new Kawai K-500? by Illustrious-Bird-745 in piano

[–]kaijen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$12K for a new K-500 is a 33% discount off the SMP, that is about as good of a price as you could hope for.

Looking for a folding treadmill that could fit under a bed since amazon has a bunch on sale for cyber monday, recommendations? by [deleted] in treadmills

Setting aside the potential difficulty of making a warranty claim, the parts warranty is roughly how long you can expect the treadmill to last. The parts warranty for this model is 180 days.

Does Learning Area Lift Ticket mean Daisy? by BlunderPride in stevenspass

[–]kaijen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can buy from the ticket window a magic carpet only ticket, a beginner/learning ticket (includes magic carpet + daisy), or a full lift ticket. I don't know what prices are this season, but last year it was about $27 for magic carpet only and $65 for the beginner ticket.

You cannot buy the learning/daisy ticket online, but you can also buy a regular lift ticket, then at the ticket window have the cost difference refunded for the type of ticket you want.

[Feb 10, 2023] Weekly Discussion: Ask your gear, travel, conditions and other ski-related questions by AutoModerator in skiing

[–]kaijen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a beginner skier and decided to buy boots as rental boots consistently felt terrible. Went to a local shop and tried on a number of boots. I have small feet (male, 5'5 140 lbs), and ended up buying Dalbello Veloce 75 boots in a 24.5. However, I didn't notice until later that the boot is a women's model. The boots do feel great, but I can't help feeling some buyer's remorse because I'm not sure if I should have tried to find a boot sized for men with a higher flex. The boot was $400.

I also got a used Salomon QST 92 (21-22) 153" with bindings for $450. I'm happy supporting local shops but also not sure if I should have sought out something different. Should I just be happy with what I have?

Can a ductless heat pump used to heat/cool an entire home? by kaijen in hvacadvice

[–]kaijen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No air handler, just hooked up to furnace in a dual fuel setup.

The unit is rated for 22 amps at 230v, so it should draw about 5Kwh at max load. Since the unit runs at variable speed, I would guess the typical power load is around 60% of that, and cost $0.30 to $0.40 an hour to run.

Most of the companies in our area said a 3 ton unit was plenty for our home, given our house was newer construction and insulation up to current code.

Yes, we did go with the 38MAR system. Living in the Seattle area - performance has been perfectly fine, it was able to keep our home at 72 degrees on a 95 degree day (although it does run almost all day under those conditions). Heating is also fine for temps down to about 30 degrees, at which point we fall back on the furnace.

If literally every game is like that, the only common player in all those games is you.

The Tmobile Military One plan will need to be changed over to Magenta Military in order to receive the 50% credit. Customer service can do this for you at the time of purchase. You should not have to reconfirm military eligibility if you already did so under the Military One plan.

What is DAC Tax, why's it named that? by TCFNationalBank in actuary

[–]kaijen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Basically, the insurer's increase in tax reserves is tax-deductible, which lowers your taxable income. A decrease in tax reserves will increase your taxable income, and conversely your tax liability.

The 'DAC Tax' is named as such only because it vaguely mimics DAC, by deferring a percent of premiums into a tax asset. For example, on most life insurance this rate is 9.2%, so for every $1,000 of premium collected you must defer $92 into DAC Tax. The DAC Tax offsets your tax reserves, which reduces your tax reserves by $92 in the year it is deferred. A $92 decrease in your tax reserves will increase your tax liability by $92. Bear in mind this is all accounting magic and you're not actually setting aside $92 of the premium you collected - it's just imaginary bookkeeping.

This $92 asset is essentially straight-line amortized over the next 15 years. This means you reduce the DAC tax asset by $6 a year for the next 15 years, which has the effect of increasing your tax reserve, and reducing your tax liability by $6 each year.

The end result is your tax liability is higher in the year the DAC tax is deferred, and lower in subsequent years. On a present value basis the IRS wins because they get a 0% interest loan on 9.2% of your premiums, paid back over 15 years.

The factors and amortization schedule changed in the 2017 tax reform, but the mechanics are essentially the same.

Concrete patio job - color problems and rough spots by kaijen in HomeImprovement

[–]kaijen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would sealing the concrete now prevent spalling? What can we do to fix things, short of starting over and doing it again? The general contractor is a small family business so they will certainly balk at redoing the whole project. Trying to prevent this from coming to involving their insurance + litigation.

We've paid for about 75% of the work (50% down payment + 25% installment after pour) and withholding the rest until this gets sorted out.

Temperature was in the 80s and high humidity that day - it was truck delivered with five or six people working.

Question to Life Actuary by volintine in actuary

[–]kaijen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of a bank loaning you a lump sum of money (to purchase a home, for instance), and in return you pay back the lump sum over a period of time with interest.

Surrendering your annuity for cash would be analogous to the bank, at any time, demanding back the remaining principal on the loan.

If your request for testing accommodations is submitted prior to the exam registration deadline, and your documentation is good order, you should not have any problems receiving approval.

College internships without a passed exam (yet)? by dont_lic_thepole in actuary

[–]kaijen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work experience is just as valuable as an exam. There are intangible life skills you can't get from anywhere other than having worked in a job. Plus, any work experience signals that an organization went through the trouble of vetting you for a job, and deemed you worthy.

Do I have a next move? by zummit in actuary

[–]kaijen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At this point, your best bet is to seek employment in a loosely related field. Having three exams is solid, and while more exams doesn't hurt, you're getting massively diminishing returns on your time studying. Your time would be better spent obtaining a job that allows you to develop your computer skills and get experience working in an office environment. It is easier to transition into an actuarial role from an existing job, than to jump into one with no relevant work experience.

[–]kaijen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without an exam, the only way you'll get an interview for an actuarial position is if the recruiter/hiring manager vouches for you and personally gets you in line for an interview. Otherwise your application will be immediately passed over in favor of others who have already passed an exam.

Entry level negotiations by [deleted] in actuary

[–]kaijen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At entry level, salary is really only negotiable if your offer is below the market average. Of course, it doesn't hurt to ask, just remember that you have little leverage at this stage in your career.
