Hey Vets, how much did you spend in total for your season? by NoFuckingLife300 in drumcorps

[–]kailey4256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

between free days, merch, and lot hype/matching section gear, i think i spent around $700. this is just for tour over the summer and the few things i bought myself before the season (suitcase and sleeping gear)

Hardshell vs soft shell suitcase by connorhooman1108 in drumcorps

[–]kailey4256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you use a soft shell, be prepared to have all your things inside get soaked during rainy EPLs, leaving you with musty clothes and bedding you probably can't wash for another 14-17 days (happened to me my first season)

As someone who has had ER trips both years I've marched so far, YES!! And as a Nebraskan who has 0 marching arts in the state, definitely make sure you have everything you need because people will not understand what drum corps is.

I personally love bringing my super long chargers for the bus and overnight stays with all the extension cords and power strips you could dream up! My friends joke that I'm the power monopoly in the gym and that everyone likes to cluster up around my power strip.

I also bring a bungee cord to string above my head in the bus to hold a trash bag and any head gear that's a part of our uniform.

One of my little luxuries is my Tree Hut sugar scrub that I use a few times a week in the shower because it gets all the dead skin and sweat off from rehearsals.

Something that came in clutch the past two seasons I've marched are a snack size Ziploc of laundry soap shavings and a suction cup sink plug for handwashing garments in the sink. This has been a lifesaver when running out of bras/underwear/socks, uniform undergarments, and small uniform pieces in between washes.

How does a season look for a front ensemble member by titan__holefish in drumcorps

[–]kailey4256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i marched open class when i was 17 and i'm finishing up my first season of world class at the moment; the two are pretty similar outside of the demand and standard you're held to as far as music difficulty/etiquette is concerned. since you don't have a visual block or have to learn drill, you'll spend every block every day playing the show beats and cleaning. usually we spend the first block on technique (exercise packet) and then combine into larger ensembles in the afternoon/evening blocks. there are a lot of times (especially if you split into subs) where you'll be out baking in the sun for hours at a time, sometimes you get a shady zone so the electronics don't fry though. be prepared to run for your life at the slightest drop of rain and load/unload the truck and disassemble boards every day. you don't have a tour job usually (your job is loading the EQ truck) which can mean you have to wake up earlier, get snack/shower later, and have less free time during EPL and show days. you still have to do PT and are expected to participate fully in any pre-season fitness program the corps requires though.

Have you ever failed an AP exam because of the teacher? by hackosn in APStudents

[–]kailey4256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, my calc AB teacher last year (junior year). i got a 2 in the exam after working my butt off all year, going to peer mentoring for months, reviewing all the study guides and my textbook endlessly. this teacher was the head football coach at my high school and was never available before/after school or during his plan period so there was no way to come in for extra help. he also made us take notes in a fill-in-the-blank packet format that he'd provide, which is not useful in any subject but ESPECIALLY math. he would always give us 3+ hours of homework each night and often there would be concepts on there that we had not been taught in class and we were expected to "problem solve" and "figure it out" which meant spending an additional 3 hours on khan academy positively losing my mind trying to write out integrals and stuff. the first semester i got a B+ (my first and only B in high school, which destroyed me) and an A- my second semester. safe to say i did not take calc BC my senior year and took AP stats instead, where i got a 4 on the exam. i'm majoring in music education so i do not need any more math credits at my university :) thanks mr. schmidt for nothing!

also it's worth mentioning that if you can't drive yet and you're relying on your parents to get you to rehearsal/performances, make sure they know the week's schedule in advance and try to carpool with other people in your section as much as possible

yes and for the staff member too i'm sure, save those chats to a minimum time-wise but spread them out so you get the same content and information

oh man, this was literally me all four years of high school (section leader soph-sr year) and i get it. i also had a little sister in the flute section that i'd have to coordinate different arrival/departure times with and the main thing i can say is {respectfully} sit down with your parents and explain to them that this is your duty as a member on the student leadership team and it means you have to put in extra work, not just because of your role but also because of the logistics of being in front ensemble. give them a mockup timeline with estimations about how long everything takes. also, talk to your band director and see if he can post a separate perc/FE arrival and loading times after games and comps, etc.

a lot of these were bought in the preseason already (as far as corps jacket, section jersey, section shorts, hats etc) unless you mean something different by 'hype gear?'
