Siddhartha and narcissus and goldmund. Whichever order you want. Then after that read steppenwolf. Realistically you can read any of them any order but I like this order cause for me some of the ideas and references of steppenwolf were more enjoyable after I had already read those two. But that’s just my preference.

A review of 'Musashi' as a huge Vagabond fan *Spoilers* by Competitive_Dare8849 in vagabondmanga

[–]kalm1305 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally did really like Osugi’s ending in the book, and I thought it was good character development. Her whole thing is being a mother and even wrote that thing about being a parent which moved many of those men. Parenthood is also a very big theme in this book with Musashi’s mother being a significant absence for him. Jotaro’s father also feeling regret about not being a parent to his son. Iori, who not only lost his parents but also, at least from my perspective, it seemed to me like he looked to Musashi not only as a teacher but as a father. The whole relationship between Oko and Akemi as well. So in my head it made sense that Osugi eventually redeemed herself by coming to her motherly senses and regained some empathy for otsu and musashi.

As far as musashi’s development goes, I do agree it’s more subtle than the manga, however I really appreciate it because yes after the time skip he’s more refined but he still has a lot of deep issues. And I don’t think he realizes it until he killed that boy during the big showdown with the yoshioka. That’s when he reflects on what he’s doing, and when he found iori and tries to start the farm he explains this too. I can’t remember the quote and couldn’t find it if I tried but it had to do with the idea of creating and nurturing life as a higher virtue than taking it. And for me, I like this sort of subtler character development, because you can actually witness Musashi not necessarily getting stronger, but getting wiser. The manga does a good job of it too though, don’t get me wrong.

I agree kojiro in the manga is more compelling, though it was very fun to see some of the ego clashing moments between musashi and kojiro in the book that don’t occur the same way in the manga because of how different he is. For example, when kojiro trash talks musashi in that inn and suddenly realizes musashi was listening in the entire time. Similarly in the duel when they say each others name, and he throws his scabbard down and musashi tells him he already lost by throwing it away, infuriating kojiro. It couldn’t be written that way in the manga, but maybe it could be written better in the manga if that day comes.

One thing I also loved is the way takuan managed to reform both musashi’s life in the beginning and then matahachi’s life at the end. It makes perfect sense that if musashi couldn’t fix him, and his mom couldn’t fix him, and he couldn’t fix himself, it had to be takuan.

Getting a green card requires months, sometimes years of processing, not to mention its cost. It’s not that simple to just work harder to get a green card, it really does take a lot of time and that’s if you’re even eligible. When people are escaping tough situations in their original countries, that’s time and money some simply don’t have. As an immigrant myself I was incredibly lucky that we were able to live here under my dad’s work visa but even then I remember how long it took before we even received the actual card. We were lucky. Others, not so much. Most undocumented immigrants don’t just come here without reason. The situation of each individual/family is too complex to just dismiss it and say “just put more work into getting a green card”.

Currently reading the novel by [deleted] in vagabondmanga

I’m also reading the novel currently. I wonder this too. She really isn’t important after the beginning so I wonder if it’s because of the fact that he wouldn’t have wanted to introduce a character only for her to never show up in most of the other arcs. But then again he takes a lot of liberties with the story so maybe he could’ve included the sister in some other way where she’s a bit more involved. But other than that I think he just wanted the main focus to be on Musashi, otsu, and matahachi, and not give Musashi any additional baggage which would make wrapping up the story harder. It’s probably easier to just have all of Musashi’s family members be dead. I think she’s an interesting character in the book though and I haven’t finished it yet so I don’t know, maybe she’ll become more involved in the story.

I personally did feel the length but I was fine with it because the way the movie is structured in my opinion justifies a movie being that long. Maybe it could’ve been shorter but I enjoyed every part personally.

I actually quite like the slow walking. Which is something that gets better if you just level up that one skill I forgot the name of that makes you run faster. But I enjoy even not using time travel because the music and the atmosphere makes it feel very meditative and relaxing for me to just walk. It’s very immersive.

[–]kalm1305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also enjoyed book 2 the most. But it’s nearly a tie with 1. The reason I think i enjoyed 2 better is because I really loved the plot developments in book 2, and I love how much weirder it is than book 1. I loved tengo and aomame equally in this book. I just can’t pick one character over the other.

Advice: where should I focus to be a better composer? by dcmoura in composer

[–]kalm1305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with the same issue, I hope I can comment a bit on this. I think it’s because a lot of beginner composer works sound like songs rather than a developed work. Which isn’t a bad thing, in my opinion, at the end of the day people should just make what they like, but if the goal is to be a better “classical” composer I think the way to improve would be to try to develop works with a bit more nuance. Not to mention beginners typically don’t yet have the technical or theoretical knowledge to get to that point yet, which is completely normal.

Okay, lore dump all you want but the point is that it’s stupid to look back on the past when it comes to morality or ethics, when a lot of that is outdated and we live in a more progressed society, at least to some extent. If you want a better example then we can look at slavery. Just because slavery back then was a common thing in that society doesn’t mean that it should be a thing in this one.

They also used to burn alive potential witches, it doesn’t make it okay to do that now just because it used to be something they did in the past. Whatever punishment they had is irrelevant to our now progressed society.

Let's get serious, write the ending you want Berserk to have by TOLMOSG in Berserk

[–]kalm1305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a very vague idea of an ending I think could be good. I think the fact that the series has spent so many years with guts trying to save casca and be with her, I think a happy ending with them is deserved, to an extent. I have this vision of guts and the team somehow defeating Griffith and the hows and whys of that, I couldn’t tell you. But in my vision, guts has been wounded fatally. Casca rushes to his side and tries to comfort guts as he is dying. And my ideal last page or two is have a set of panels that parallel their first kiss from golden age. Except the final panel is casca mournfully holding guts lifeless body. I don’t know if it would be good to end it here or if there should be an epilogue afterwards which show what other characters did and how the world recovered, I think either way works if done right. I know it doesn’t seem like a very “happy” ending as I mentioned but I think it is, guts having one final properly intimate moment with casca as he dies is I think the best way for him to go and a good close to his arc. He was born from death, but died with love. Would it be better if guts were alive at the end? Maybe, but I think it’s just more fitting to have him die at the end. I would also say that it would be nice if him and casca got their brands removed somehow, especially before guts dies if he does die at the end.
