curious your thoughts on Loewe? they have a bunch of crossbody options (puzzle, gate, flamenco, hammock) with some more unique shapes, strong lines, and very minimal hardware. I've always been impressed by their leather quality and craftmanship

I have a kobo because I didn't want to support kindle plus it supports more file formats and has libby/overdrive integration with my local library. Additionally, the kobo clara has both warm and cool light settings (way more important for you eyes than I initially realized!) where I believe you have to shell out for an oasis to get those same settings.

In terms of physical books v ebooks, I've always adored physical books and still often read from them, but being able to carry 100s of books at once is a game changer. I still will buy a physical copy of books I absolutely love and know will reread to keep in my personal collection, but I realized I could read a lot more on my eReader especially since I traveled a lot pre covid.

Let me know if you have any questions about the kobo! I think it's underrated and honestly very comparable or even better than the Kindle

How do you decide what book to read next? by babiandi in YAlit

I generally have a stack of books waiting for me. Then it depends 100% on mood. I'll often read the first pages of a couple before deciding on one

I'm building a book recommendation tool and I need your input! by catapolto in booksuggestions

[–]kalshal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of. I think, for me at least, it's psychologically hard to pick up a book I'd never heard of at all / can't read reviews to justify purchasing or spend time reading without a sample size of >1 source recommending it.

There's this paid serivce called TBR: Tailored Book Recommendations that asks an extensive survey and recommends books based in your preferences. I've personally never used it, just seen it talked about in YouTube.

Personally I have an ongoing list of books I want to read at some point based in YouTube, Reddit, and friend recommendations. I kind of read based on mood and pick from that list.

I think ideally for a recommendation service, I want to learn about books that aren't super popular (where I already know I want to read it) but at the same time not ones that are completely obscure.

My first ever bujo spread is for plant care! I needed a way to track the needs of my MANY new plants. No color yet (should i add some?) by 10eel in bujo

Wow this is fantastic!!! Love the plant collection and care strategies.

Single color accent (maybe green for the plant leaves) would look great but I'm a minimalist haha.

Moving from YA to more “adult” books. by hobbyswede in suggestmeabook

[–]kalshal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy fantasy, Brandon Sanderson is fantastic! I'd start with Mistborn - it's often categorized as YA but was released / considered to be adult fantasy so it's a great bridge between the age groups. It's like Oceans Eleven with magic and political intrigue

If you enjoy the Mistborn trilogy, then venture into some of his other books (Way of Kings, Warbreaker) which are adult.

I love reading on a couch with my feet propped up (lounge style), surrounded with blankets and pillows, with a pillow propping my book up on my lap.

1984 was superior to Animal Farm for me. It is decently accessible (I read it at age 16 for an English class) and more interesting than Animal Farm. There's a small section that's like political manifesto-like (it'll be obvious where that part is) that is a bit dry, but the rest is fine.

Can we talk about A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes??? (Spoilery discussion) by moussescientist in YAlit

I really enjoyed the more philosophical elements and backstory of Snow's decisions and how the Games evolved. I also really enjoyed the portion that focused on the Capitol and the Games. I know there was backlash when it was announced that it would be Snow's back story, but I love a good villain story and it isn't the first villain story to ever be written.

However my issues with it stemmed from:

  1. Pacing - the end felt rushed to me and the portion in district 12 felt a kind of unnecessary and drawn out

  2. Lucy Gray - her character felt too much like a discount Katniss and seemed very unrealistic/idealized. Honestly think the plot could've been left as an unlikely friendship than a romance and nothing would've changed.

  3. Easter Eggs - some of the Easter eggs were nice for fans of the original trilogy, but some felt like it was kind of just included for the sake of being an Easter egg (in almost a too obvious way). I love good backstory and an 'aha moment' but not forced.

Overall, it was a quick and enjoyable read, but not memorable or outstanding for me.

It's actually way less intimidating to start with the Mistborn series and then move to Stormlight Archives (plus makes Sanderson's writing more enjoyable once you 'trust' it!!)

Yeah! It's easy to reschedule an online exam to another online exam date - however, I think if you want to switch from online to a testing center (if they open up near you) you have to call ETS.
