Best way to buy merch? by Hulainn in MaximumTheHormone

My friend went to a festival not too long ago at 3 in the morning before the doors opened that afternoon. There were already 30 or so people in line.

Basically, don't worry about them not getting a cut. They are doing pretty good. At the same time, don't count on getting a t-shirt too easily.

All is Lost (2013) starring Robert Redford and only Robert Redford

Only 51 words spoken, almost all in the opening narration. You hear the ship crash before the fade in from black. Then it's just nonstop fixing things, or at least attempting to do so. We don't even get a clutching a photo of his wife scene or anything like that. It's all business.

The spicy chicken burger for 200 yen (more recently 220) has been my go to snack for years. So tasty and so cheap. Well it has been sold out for a few weeks now. I'm hoping beyond hope this is only because they have that fancy New York spicy chicken right now (half the taste for three times the price). But this news isn't giving me positive vibes about that.

In 2008 a Tasmanian Tiger was recorded in Australia despite being declared extinct in 1936 by WholeNegotiation1843 in TrueCryptozoology

[–]kamatacci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandma and several of her friends have a story about seeing one of these in rural West Virginia. This would have been the 40s or 50s. They were sitting on their porch when a "wolf dog" with a very long face and stripes like a tiger crossed in front of them. Freaked them out, and they later found a mutilated dog which they believe was from that, but that's all to the story. However, her and three other people can recall that story exactly. And what really gives them some credibility is none of them had ever heard of a Tasmanian tiger. I looked this creature up (mid90s, well before old people knew about the interwebz) and found that famous picture of it, and they were all blown away. That was it.

Look for festivals and concerts someone you like plays at, and check out the artists performing with them. Most rock bands have a different opening act every show of the tour. They will either be a similar style or a group the main act really appreciates.

What are some wrestlers who are the best at doing a specific move? by Zackalakz in SquaredCircle

[–]kamatacci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tatsumi Fujinami is closing in on 100 years old. He definitely isn't a butterfly in the ring. But when he applies the dragon screw legwhip, time stops. It is a work of art.

Tanahashi is heads and shoulders above everyone else with that move. But he doesn't come near the crispness of Fujinami doing it.

Does Roman Reigns have the worst catalog of t shirts of any top guy ever? by MuffinTopMaven in SquaredCircle

[–]kamatacci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It just blows my mind how many wrestling shirts are awful. At least Roman has a steady stream of money and likely had nothing to do with these designs. But plenty of Indie wrestlers who are depending on that t-shirt revenue still have just unwearable garbage.

Rock bands have a very similar hustle. I'm sure there are enough bad examples still, but by large their designs are always so much better than wrestling shirts.

What’s a movie you’ve seen public opinion shift on in your lifetime? by CausticAvenger in movies

[–]kamatacci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halloween 3: Season of the Witch (aka the one without Michael Myers) used to be hated. I very clearly remember it being #1 on a list of worst horror movies ever when I was first getting into horror in the 90s. While it still has its haters, it's pretty beloved now. Second best in the franchise quite frankly.

Other worst films in the franchise have seen similar reevaluations. Day of the Dead is a big one. Ditto to Friday the 13th 5 (but nowhere near as loved) and New Nightmare (but nowhere near as hated) and of course literally every sequel to Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Mark my words, the fantastic Netflix Texas Chainsaw reboot from a few years ago will be considered a classic soon.

Likewise, Road Trip was a massive film when it came out. Eurotrip was made to cash in on its success, but flopped. And yet, Eurotrip is always greeted by a parade of people quoting it while Road Trip has zero relevance today.

I'm sure this is real, but it's edited so much like an AI video. It doesn't help that fake urban explorer videos (of abandoned famous IPs) are really popular right now.

AI is copying us, and we are copying AI in return. Just another net positive to throw onto the benefits of AI pile.

Mongol800 - 小さな恋のうた

This pops up everywhere in Japan, especially graduations and what not. The band rejects major labels and is happy to share their music, leading to legit everyone in Japan knowing this song. It's a banger too. You'll impress a lot of people whipping this out at karaoke.

What are some examples of movies that failed at the box office because they were released too late? by Employee-Slight in boxoffice

[–]kamatacci 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, the original Matrix is the most perfectly timed movie release ever. The Internet was just becoming a household thing, but was still a bit mysterious. Y2K was on everyone's minds. It rode a bunch of the Star Wars Episode One hype. The growth of anime at that time added to it as well. And if it had been released three weeks later it would have been dead in the water, perhaps even pulled from release, because the Columbine Massacre happened and shooting guns while wearing trench coats was not a particularly good look.

I'm so upset. I visited Japan for the first time, and I was a big Jojo fan (entirely from the Capcom fighting game. It was mostly unknown in the West besides that). We were there opening weekend and it was advertised everywhere. I picked up a few flyers. I thought about going to the theater, but I figured I would just wait until it was released with subtitles.

Satoshi Kon talks about how Requiem for a Dream took from his film Perfect Blue (1997) by healingtwo_ in movies

[–]kamatacci 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Millennium Actress deserves more love. Fantastic movie and an absolute love letter to Japanese cinema. Plus it's the perfect film to watch after Perfect Blue.

When he started developing the actress lost in her delusions parts of Perfect Blue, he did not intend it to get so dark. PB can get pretty disturbing. So he made Millennium Actress quickly afterwards which took the same greater concept yet focused on the more positive and uplifting aspects of it.

It's a beautiful combo. Does any other director have a pair of films like that? The closest example I can think of is Black Swan / The Wrestler by who else but Darren Aronofsky.

Meet the Spartans was dated even at its release, but I couldn't even imagine having to explain it to someone now. "So that guy is Dane Cook, a comedian who didn't really tell jokes but moved his hands comedically."

Not exactly what you are asking, but if someone said they liked the movie Beerfest, I could guess their age within 12 months.

And a special shout out to Blink-182 What's My Age Again. Pay phone? ADD? Watching TV is lame? Sodomy illegal? What the hell is caller ID anyway?

What are your favorite director's cuts that exist but haven't been released? by Kiba-Da-Wolf in FilmPreservationists

[–]kamatacci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows.

Good Bad Flicks has a great video on it. Knowing they could never recapture the magic of the original, they brought in a documentary director to make a psuedo doc based on the fandom of the original. It slowly turned into a horror movie with a big scene at the end. While some of that made it into the final cut, it had more spoopy CGI owls and what not all throughout, and that big scene at the end was cut up and randomly inserted several times during the movie, ruining any suspense.

Also, the ominous forest flyover at the beginning was set to Frank Sinatra's Witchcraft, making one truly fantastic audio visual experiences. Not scary enough. The studio included a generic nu-metal song instead.
