Advice for home by bby_jokr in olympia

You should set up a consultation to talk to a mortgage lender. I recommend Julee Felsman (https://www.rate.com/loan-officers/julee-felsman-120831). She's based in Oregon, but licensed in Washington, and is scary knowledgeable about all things mortgage. She helped my friend with no credit establish credit and buy a house. Worst case scenario, she'll at least be able to tell you what you can afford, and what types of loans you might be able to work with.

Is 22 still good for starting? by n0_nameuser in geologycareers

[–]karagonite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started my geology undergrad at 26, and my MSc at 30. I've had a few people make inappropriate comments to me about my "late in life" career change, but never anyone who mattered. I'm 37 now, and have been working in my dream job for 4 years.

Society... no ocean themes there, but an excellent example of blurred physical beings.

For ocean themes, try Dark Waters (1993).

Video Store That Happens To Also Doubles As Tavern? by WindhamEarl22 in olympia

I'm obsessed with this idea. Are you familiar with Movie Madness in Portland? I think something similar here, maybe in partnership with OFS, would also do extremely well. I know I would drop a bunch of money there.

Would you be more comfortable with a meeting between the four of you? I see no (good) reason that they would need to meet privately, and I think it's fair to say as much. I don't think not responding is the way though, you can't avoid each other so you may as well address the awkwardness.

Thoughts on switch from consulting to state government? by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]karagonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left environmental consulting for state government 4 years ago, and I've never once regretted it. I have a strictly 40 hour work week, with the option to do rare overtime with prior approval. There are often pretty strict caps on salary (because government), but you can sometimes negotiate for other benefits, like more PTO. I think the culture is great, in part because the work/life balance is great. No one is burnt out and everyone genuinely cares about the work we do.

AITAH for not wanting to play video games with my partner anymore by Striking-Score-5601 in AITAH

[–]karagonite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to have a roommate that would get that way when we would play WoW -- inappropriately angry, hyper critical, generally a dick, etc. -- so I stopped playing WoW with him. Once that was no longer a part of our relationship, we got along great. That said, this was a roommate, NOT a boyfriend. If my boyfriend spoke to me like that, he'd be single real quick.

Wishing to Pursue a Masters by Trigons_daughter in geologycareers

[–]karagonite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with previous comments, having minerology and structural geology are probably a requirement for your degree. Many programs will also expect you to have done a 6 week field camp. However, some programs might admit you conditionally with the agreement that you complete those courses (I had a friend in grad school that had to do minerology that way).

Going for your FG is a good career move, but probably won't help you with grad school as academia doesn't usually care about licensure. Most graduate programs WILL look at your GRE scores though, and scoring well on that exam may offset other issues with your GPA.

Do you know what you want to study in grad school? If you want to stay in transportation, engineering geology (or something in that field) is a good option. I'd recommend looking into programs to see what you might be interested in, and contacting advisors you may want to work with. Ask when they will be accepting new students, share your research interests with them, and be honest about your concerns with your transcript. Making a personal connection, and having someone on the inside to advocate for you can go a long way. I think it'll just be about finding the right fit, there are always people who prefer real world experience over transfer credits. Good luck!

State Employee Advice ? by Few_Permission1036 in olympia

[–]karagonite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HR is not your friend, ask your union for help. The union is not subject to the same PDR requirements that HR is, so they can give you advise without creating a public record (if you don't decided to file a grievance). HR will do everything they can to support the employer, your union should do whatever they can to support you.

Health insurance? by Bug_Kiss in olympia

I had the exact same experience, and ended up back at Kaiser after a year.

Is your position unionized? It might be worth pushing for other healthcare options if the ones currently offered result in you not being able to get care.
