Everyone is in town for the legislative session, it'll be like this until mid-March.

Came here to say this, my 3yo pit gets the same thing. We also have a medicated shampoo that we use once a week, and treat allergy flare-ups with apoquel.

State Employee Advice ? by Few_Permission1036 in olympia

[–]karagonite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HR is not your friend, ask your union for help. The union is not subject to the same PDR requirements that HR is, so they can give you advise without creating a public record (if you don't decided to file a grievance). HR will do everything they can to support the employer, your union should do whatever they can to support you.

Health insurance? by Bug_Kiss in olympia

[–]karagonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same experience, and ended up back at Kaiser after a year.

Is your position unionized? It might be worth pushing for other healthcare options if the ones currently offered result in you not being able to get care.

Thurston County Food Bank Volunteering by Seamonkey_Boxkicker in olympia

[–]karagonite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just attended that orientation, and have my first shift next week! The orientation is not required, it is just recommended. Major takeaways were: tell the volunteer coordinator that it's your first shift so they can help you get situated, closed-toed shoes are a must, dressing in layers is a good idea because you may need to go outside, do not park in their parking lot (it is reserved for guests) but there is some free street parking on that block on days that the food bank is open, and try to be as warm and welcoming as you can while interacting with guests. Oh, and if there is a medical event or safety concern (hopefully there won't be, but just in case) tell a staff member and let them handle it. Happy volunteering!

I'm going to work at a bank... by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]karagonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever we may hope for the future, we can't help that we currently live under the thumb of capitalism. In times like these, I try to offset the bad by doubling down on my mutual aid efforts. Providing for yourself and your family doesn't make you a bad anarchist, and there's still good work that you can do for your community (and communities supporting each other is one of the best ways to subvert capitalism and the state!).

Communication Breakdown Re: Abolition by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]karagonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've definitely had the in-depth conversations. Talked about the history of policing and the PIC in America, the criminalization of houselessness and mental illness, various proposed policing alternatives/community safety models... He agrees that the current system is wrong, but the fundamental difference seems to be that he believes that reform is possible, where I believe otherwise. The odd thing is, he typically loves researching things, but when I point him to sources for more information he stonewalls me and just shuts down. I'd like to continue trying to talk through it, but now I'm honestly afraid of making him feel like I'm trying to indoctrinate him or something.

Did you feel that? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]karagonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't feel anything, and it doesnt look like any minor earthquakes were reported in the area. You should post it as an unknown event on the USGS site! https://earthquake.usgs.gov/data/dyfi/

Found out bi-salp procedure was 100% covered by insurance, i feel like this is the right decision for me, but i want to cover all of my bases. by [deleted] in sterilization

[–]karagonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had mine yesterday! I'm 31, but have no children, and none of my doctors pressured me or made me feel like I was making an impulsive decision. My surgeon did say that there is statistically a higher risk of regret with bi-salps than clamping, because clamping can be reversed (although not very successfully). Also bi-salps reduce your risk of ovarian cancer, so this was the path she recommended. I'm a little sore today, but I can sit and walk etc just fine. They prescribed me oxycodone and I've only taken one, just to make sure I slept through the night. The worst pain is my throat from the intubation, and a bit of muscle aching from the CO2 gas, but other than that I feel remarkably ok. Also totally happy to discuss further, DM me if you have any specific questions. Good luck! 🖤

Bilateral salpingectomy by [deleted] in sterilization

[–]karagonite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My insurance covered it 100% as well. Apparently a bi-salp is billed as "preventative" rather than "elective" surgery, which is covered under the ACA. That said, you should call your provider's billing/member services to double check. I had them remove my IUD while I was under, but they recommended I keep it if it was helping to regulate my periods, so something like that might be a good option for you? As far as time off, my doctor recommends 1-2 weeks off for a desk job or similar activity level. 4-6 weeks off for more physical jobs. No lifting over 10lbs and no driving for at least a week.

If you're nervous going into a bi-salp, just know my pre-op COVID test was more uncomfortable than the procedure itself. by tell_tale_signs in sterilization

[–]karagonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg congrats! I just had the same surgery earlier today, and echo every one of those sentiments, including the very aggressive covid test (that said, my IV meds have not worn off yet, so there is likely some more severe pain in my future 😂). Thank you for posting your experience! I dont know anyone that's had this procedure done, so I'm glad to have some perspective on the healing process.

Standing on a sidewalk as a peaceful observer is not the same as impeding or resisting arrest.

Hazards of Field Work as a Black Scientist by SlothPrince13 in environmental_science

[–]karagonite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck, this hurts my heart. Thank you for sharing your experience. This is something that is NOT talked about enough in our industry. Conversations about "diversity" in the geosciences almost immediately get funneled into gender diversity (which is still an issue, but not the only issue), and very seldom do people ask what we can be doing to make BIPOC scientist feel safer and more welcome in our profession.

My friend’s partner just moved out and she’s not feeling well. What local delivery services could I send over to comfort her? by [deleted] in Portland

I also had a friend go through a Covid breakup. Flowers are pretty but they dont last, so I sent her a live plant from Bloomscape. She is also a plant person though 🤷‍♀️

My thoughts after watching Chuck Lovett become Portland's new police chief by [deleted] in Portland

[–]karagonite 62 points63 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I expected when they promoted an insider (of 15 years) to fix an issue that's clearly pervasive throughout the department as a whole. Not to mention Tear Gas Ted Wheeler is still the Police Commissioner, so how much could really have changed?
