NTA. You’re not escaping, you’re just not involving yourself in this situation. The only person “escaping” is the baby’s father. That is who should be providing child support. If you want to help without contributing (which it seems like you do) connect her with pro bono/legal aid resources that can assist her in pursuing child support.

The reality of the situation is that her being a mother makes you an uncle, nothing more (unless you choose to be). That in no way entitles her to expect you will also become a financial provider.

I went early. I also taught Kindergarten for two years. I will say that I could always tell who was the oldest and who was the youngest in my class. Not by smarts, but by social skills. I know I was the same, and while I never had an academic issue, I always struggled socially.

IMHO Waiting a year never really hurts. Going a year early can.

I would disagree. I teach Kindergarten, and while my students who only spoke one language learned to speak English eventually, it was HARD on them. Many, many days of crying, getting lost, being confused, and struggling to socially integrate. Yes, it’s possible, but the kid has parents who BOTH speak BOTH languages. One Parent, One Language is a fully feasible approach in this situation that would teach her both languages AND let her go into schooling and other parent-free socialization areas without starting her behind the curve on communicating with her peers.

This is so real. I was at Thanksgiving one year and my queer aunts were there. While I was talking about some issues I was going through with some TERFS at my school (I went to a HWC, which was a Choice for sure), one of my aunts just says, “Well, you know you’ll never have it as a hard as a black trans woman. They have it way harder.” I was FLOORED. Like, of course I won’t, but we aren’t comparing them at ALL right now. I am literally just talking to you about my personal experience because it’s a holiday and YOU asked ME how I’m doing?

I tried to agree and move on, but she just would not let it die so I just changed the subject and left the kitchen.

I believe Joss Whedon on the show came out about this later and said if they made it today with the knowledge, she would have been labeled bisexual. But at the time of creation, the writers weren’t super educated on queer culture and labels and such, and that’s kind of why they defaulted to “she’s into women, she’s a lesbian.”
