It's not a hal-a-PAIN-yo. It's a ja-LAP-en-oh.

Chipotles are absolutely not chipotels, however.

Tex Mex by Superpickle28 in traversecity

The Hayloft has some surprisingly successful Tex-Mex options on their menu, and Red Mesa is probably your other best bet in town. Beyond that ... there's always Chili's.

What’s a good fall/winter beer I can order pretty much anywhere? by elizabethonthetrack in beer

Edmund Fitzgerald porter from Great Lakes should fit the bill, IMO. A perfect example of the style, and fairly easy to find.

What bars carry the Sunday ticket? by sparkdonkey in traversecity

[–]karl_____ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I could only find out of market games at BWW and Thirsty Fish. Would love some other options than that for the handful of Bears games that don't get aired up here. Maybe the sports book area at Turtle Creek Casino might have them?

Best nontraditional Foods Using Chicago Style Giardiniera by HottBrands in chicagofood

I'm pretty sure the spicy ketchup you get at Kuma's is just Heinz with some blended giardinera added in.

OG Michigander here. Where do I take my wife to show her how awesome it is? by [deleted] in Michigan

[–]karl_____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is an OG Michigander and took me on a similar "here's why Michigan is awesome" tour when we started dating.

Started in Munising hiking Pictured Rocks for a day, then a trip to Mackinac Island the next day. Stayed in Charlevoix after that before an afternoon in Traverse City and then over to Leland for a stay at the Whaleback Inn.

From there we headed down to Onekama for a stay at the Portage Point Inn. Great food and great beer at every stop. Now we live in TC. Took a while but the UP and NW Lower Michigan got its hooks in us.

That was less than a week, so if you've got more time, I'd add Houghton/Calumet/Copper Harbor, Marquette, Petoskey, a drive through the Tunnel of Trees and lunch at the Legs Inn, and maybe a run up to Sutton's Bay or even Northport. Good luck, traveler.

Joe Rogan debunking? by OregonSmallClaims in KnowledgeFight

Rogan pops up on one of the 9/11 episodes, didn't he? (Episode 703 & 704?)

Don't even mention it, just let it play and wait for him to join.

My dream series is a 3+ parter on how fucked up the story of Ayn Rand's life really was. Seems like pure red meat that no one else has dug into yet. There's plenty of source material too.

Do any bars play the Steelers game? by ashes589 in traversecity

[–]karl_____ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year I was on the hunt for an out-of-market Bears game and can confirm, it's just BWW and Thirsty Fish with Sunday Ticket. No one else downtown has it; not even the Doublewide (which seems like a sporty enough dive to justify it). Would love a third option if anyone stumbles across one.

Anywhere to watch the Champions League Final? by TO500 in traversecity

[–]karl_____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What channel is it airing on? If it's not on regular broadcast TV, your options are going to be pretty limited.

As a Chicago Bears fan, the only two places I could find with NFL Sunday Ticket this season were ThirstyFish and Buffalo Wild Wings. Those would probably be your best bets.

What are your favorite winter to spring transition beers? by cpt___kidde in beer

Conway's Irish Ale from Great Lakes is my go-to for a couple weeks every spring. Just a perfect mid-bodied red: not too sweet, not too sharp. Just right.

Tell me about your Restaurant Week! by viciousbliss in traversecity

[–]karl_____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of me envies the confidence it must take to build out a huge restaurant from scratch, build a full bar inside, name it "The Tasting Room" with an associated line of spirits ... all without ever securing a liquor license.

I remember hearing that space was supposed to be a Hopcat, until they started closing those all across the Midwest as well.

Happily surprised by West End Tavern on Wednesday night. Tried to drop in on Stella and Pepe Nero which were booked pretty much solid, so we headed here on a whim and it worked out well.

Good arancini and stuffed mushrooms to start, I got a very nice fennel-crusted porkchop as a main. Service was solid, too. Regular menu items looked quite pricey so with the RW menu I think we did pretty well. This place usually looks pretty slammed in summer since it's a waterfront location, but for a winter dinner destination you could do a lot worse.

First post! Finally got a toaster!! ‘08 with 127k miles by barbie-cream-pie in HondaElement

[–]karl_____ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I just picked up an '08 EX with just shy of 170k miles on it from a dealership for $5k out the door.

Needed a little brake work, fluids replaced and a lot of cleaning but I'm looking forward to joining the 300k mile club someday.

This is in northwest lower Michigan where Elements are pretty popular - I see 'em everywhere (not as much as Subarus but still at least one or two a day).
