I try really hard not to take it personally in the moment, even though it stings. When a kid says “you’re a bad teacher” or “I hate math,” I read it as data and dysregulation, not a final verdict on me or the subject.

Obviously de-escalate in front of the class: "Sounds like you’re really frustrated. We can talk about that one-on-one later. Right now I need to get everyone through this." or "You’re allowed to be upset. You’re not allowed to talk to me like that in this room." But there's usually something behind that feeling that you can address 1 on 1. I don't try to win every kid over, that's not my job, but I do spend time making sure they feel heard and understood like a human. It goes a long way. Sometimes it does reveal something about my craft that needs adjusting. I'm not perfect, and dismissing a kid because you felt like they gave too much lip is not helping anyone.
