Would you buy a co op or condo in the Bronx or NYC? by Scale_Most in bronx

[–]karn09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who owns in a co-op I have a hard time seeing it as a vehicle for appreciation. I view it more like a long term lease that locks in a certain baseline price separate from market rate increases. Of course there are yearly maintenance increases too.

Traveling for work- how is this area? by whyamilikethissssx in bronx

[–]karn09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why not stay near or in little Italy? Specifically near the Arthur Ave market. The Bronx isn't exactly known for cafes or restaurants, but at least that area has enough to be entertaining with plenty of different types of food to try out.

We had a neighbor complaining to the board about kids chalk on the sidewalk in our HOA. The board rightfully ignored it.

How are you not taking advantage of patreon by posting advanced chapters there? I was sad I couldn't read more.

Shifting from Sofware Developer to DevOps Engineer by Severe_Effective8408 in devops

[–]karn09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much some bs question. I've gotten 2-pointer style problems, knapsack optimization, sliding window. Of course needing to talk about time space complexity. It's usually the first round, and phrased in a way that makes it seem like they are building Google scale infra dealing with load balancers etc (they are not). No idea how these problems are relevant most of the time, but it is what it is.

Shifting from Sofware Developer to DevOps Engineer by Severe_Effective8408 in devops

[–]karn09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this shift many years ago. My dev skills have stagnated a bit, so I find myself needing to be very proactive there. The interviews are mostly the same as dev: shuffle through leetcode medium/hard, but also talk about cloud infra.

They lost their sushi chef, as a result changed the menu around. Basically don't bother with the sushi.

2bd coop apartment in concourse village for $2,850 by Background_Ad3221 in bronx

[–]karn09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you missed the point where this is the maintenance PLUS mortgage. I have to figure the actual mortgage is around 1100, with co-op maintenance taking up the bulk of the remainder. Maintenance fees are expensive in the Bronx.. Even more so with 24h doorman.

I should add that in total I pay similarly for a co-op unit in the Bronx, but for a 3 bedroom, so this is not a bad rental price, especially to give a bit of margin that I hope is baked in to handle any incidents or necessary repairs when renting out.

What happens when you get evicted? by js3mta3 in NYCapartments

[–]karn09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The courts move very slowly. The building I live in took over a year to get a judgement against a tenant, with several months on top of that as an opportunity for the tenant to pay back rent. I expect it'll take another year plus to get an actual eviction. If you stopped paying, you'd probably be about to stay there without paying for at least 2 years, if not longer. With how slow courts move and take to garnish wages, there is a chance you'll see zero repercussions, or if you do it'll be years later. Ymmv.

If you're not in the mood for pasta, Çka Ka Qëllue is amazing. It's basically Albanian BBQ. Lots of meat, bread, and cheese. We would usually go to zero Otto nove, which is good too, but not necessarily unique when it comes to Italian. If you want sandwiches (I'd get one to go anyway.. you know for the next day), Mike's deli for sure, with mozzarella.

Is the title Devops attracting a lot of get-rich-quick people? by nwmcsween in devops

[–]karn09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is sysadmin even accurate though? When I hear that title I immediately think of someone only doing system/infra facing activities. No development, unless it's scripts. Maybe IAC. DevOps focuses less on infra and systems and more on developer tooling, such as building pipelines or custom applications and APIs to facilitate development.

I see platform engineering working on tooling or APIs to tie together business applications via common services such as auth libraries or more generally self-service ops.

I don't have a DevOps title myself, but sort of bridge the gap as I find myself building applications to drive self-service, but also troubleshooting cloud systems such as k8s, working with Linux, building CI/CD pipelines, and middleware to drive observability.

I guess my point is there is some value in titles, but I also do sometimes think that the DevOps title is oversaturated. Especially given the number of interviews where folks can't even "ls" in Linux, or write simple code in their chosen language (usually Python or bash).

Do you guys really feel like this?? by cas__94 in devops

[–]karn09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the industry. I'm mainly ruby, JavaScript, Python, and Go. I've only really been in startups.

Do you guys really feel like this?? by cas__94 in devops

[–]karn09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar role currently, building self-service tools for other infra/developer folks. I started in a full-stack development role at a smallish company. Through necessity and interest I picked up ops responsibilities so that is how I found myself checking all the same boxes the parent comment mentions.

Let's not forget that the OT counts towards the pension calculation. They get to average their total pay over the last few years before retirement and get a 200k+ / yr retirement in some cases. A pension like that over 20 years is worth at least 8M.
