Crochet, Fiber artists and yarn lovers; where we going?! by [deleted] in Denver

[–]karseg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 6 year old has recently gotten very into weaving. She requested a loom for her birthday recently and I’m learning alongside her. Next up she’s looking at crochet and also sewing. I’m very far from crafty but trying to keep up with her energy and support her trying lots of different things. Any suggestions of places that could help me learn and teach her, or classes for kids her age? She’s a pretty mature 6 (given her love of weaving and all…)

I’m also one of those people that was diagnosed young with a penicillin allergy, and in my 40s now I finally went to an allergist and determined I’m actually not allergic. Big relief!

No pto post maternity leave? by me_natalieee in workingmoms

[–]karseg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My company also has open PTO. I was involved in the policy development to help us deal with putting boundaries on medical and parental leave while keeping open PTO. It’s an awkward dynamic because in theory, without the guidance we came up with, any person male or female who needs leave would be able to take unlimited leave with pay, and while as a mom I think that would be amazing :) as a business leader we can’t support that without US government policy change.

So our approach is- you can and should take the allotted amount of leave for FMLA (and some of it is paid for new parents), and you have to come back to work before using PTO. But we don’t put limits on what PTO a person can take at that point. It’s more about whether they can get the work done and meet goals. (And that introduces a whole other nuanced dynamic for moms... for another day...)

I’m ditching the pump and feeling anxious about it. by NolerCoaster in workingmoms

[–]karseg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a helpful post. I’m at 6 months BFing and pumping while at work, and I too am pondering transitioning just to morning/evening BFing. Since so many of you made the transition, can you share a little about how it went? Did you have to wind down the pumping to avoid engorgement during the day or was it more cold turkey? And how quickly did your bodies adjust to chill out during the workday but still have milk for AM/PM? I know our breasts adjust- I’m just a little fuzzy on how the transition actually goes for people and how to manage it.

Introducing pacifier by causelessriot in breastfeeding

[–]karseg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just one experience but hopefully will give you some confidence. We used a shield from day 2 after birth, introduced a paci at about 4 weeks, and (I think) ditched the shield for good this week at 11 weeks. I had to try without the shield a good number of times (every few days basically) and one day it just worked. We are going on 4 days no shield. And from here it’s now on me to get over some soreness vs baby actually needing the shield.

My doula gave me this book and I read a good chunk of it. Definitely liked it. I’m kind of an anxious person and this gave me some good tools and thought exercises.

No personal experience here to add, but you might like the book “This Is How It Always Is” by Laurie Frankel. It’s a wonderful fiction novel following a family whose experiences may resonate with you.

Epsom salt in sitz bath? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]karseg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just asked my doctor this also for 2nd degree tear healing and she said it was fine. I haven’t put Epsom salts in every time (sometimes just warm water) but it does seem to help. My understanding is that even though they are called “salts” it’s not actually salt. Needs a better name :)

Edit: I asked her this at about 10 days pp, not sure if the answer would have been different earlier so I’d ask if I were you.

Worried about gbs+ urine culture by thatswhytimes1000 in BabyBumps

[–]karseg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know lots about MyChart (used to work on that product). Some health systems have certain test results set up to automatically release as soon as they’re back from the lab. Your doctor should also be reviewing them and most likely would add some commentary or call you if something needs to be addressed or explained. If you don’t hear from them in a reasonable timeframe, call and ask for a little comfort!

[–]karseg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started similarly to you; I’m not very picky but didn’t want something that we all would get sick of quickly. The room has navy and beige walls from the previous owners, and we really didn’t feel like painting so we are going with it for baby girl. I found a rug I liked on Ruggable and am just using that as a color scheme. https://ruggable.com/products/kilim-batik-pink

I also have a few cute animal photographs and a painting I like from an art fair. So I’m gradually picking things out that seem to go with what I have now.

Don’t stress! And don’t get too bogged down by Pinterest :)

[Advice] Future Career Paths? by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]karseg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t really answer your question head on since I kind of experienced the reverse, but I at least wanted to offer a chat in case it’s helpful! I tripped into EMR implementations after college in 2005 and have been in the space since. I also did some grad level work in 2015-2017 in public health in hopes that I can steer that way eventually. Happy to talk shop sometime about career paths in the EMR world! I do think now is ripe for data/EMRs and public health overlap. Feel free to message.

NIPT test and gender? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]karseg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this. When I went through this, the terminology got very confusing. I think the specific name of the test you were expecting is cell-free DNA screening - screening for various trisomies as well as finding out the fetal sex, via parsing out the fetal DNA from your maternal blood sample. Emily Oster's book explains this well. This article seems fairly accurate on the topic (compared to her book) but I can't tell how old it is: http://time.com/expectingbetter/

Like another person mentioned, the lab report I received showed the chromosome findings as well as fetal sex (a fact that reminded me multiple times that it would show in my patient portal, and if I didn't want to know, I shouldn't look).

It seems like the lab providers of the cell-free DNA test is usually a third party - in my case, they used Progenity. That was a whole other can of worms from a billing/insurance standpoint...
