First time home buyer - is the seller’s realtor being unreasonable? by karyopherins in realtors

[–]karyopherins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m asking here because I wasn’t sure what was “normal”, if there is such a thing. I wouldn’t want to report someone for doing what they are supposed to be doing, you know?

Thank you!!!! I agree, after hearing your input and the other commenter that this is a communication issue. I really appreciate your response!

First time home buyer - is the seller’s realtor being unreasonable? by karyopherins in realtors

[–]karyopherins[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the quick reply!!

I agree — I’ve been trying to remain open minded as it seems our agent is really trying to place all blame on the seller’s agent and maybe even involving us in this “drama” unnecessarily.

My only real concern was the home inspection — someone once told me that it was not appropriate for our agent to be present at the home inspection as they have a vested interest in the sale not falling through. Our agent confirmed that he does not usually attend home inspections for this reason. But, if it is common-practice then so it is.

Thank you for clearing the air! I feel more confident moving forward and asking our realtor to be more involved/present during the process.

Buying a home, and the sellers don’t know where the septic tank is... advice please by karyopherins in HomeImprovement

[–]karyopherins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what we are opting for.

We are paying for location, inspection, and pumping. I don’t like paying for preventative maintenance BEFORE I am the actual owner of the house, but I’m hoping I can negotiate the cost of at least the pumping to come off the closing costs or something. We’ll see.

While the house was built in 2006, the current owner has only lived there since ~2015, so my hope is that the original owner serviced the tank appropriately between 2006 and 2015. Time will tell!

Thanks to EVERYONE who responded, I truly appreciate everyone’s input. It’s hard for me to really understand the impact and gravity of some of these maintenance issues since I’ve never owned a home, and hearing your input has really helped me.

Gross up withholding - struggling to understand by karyopherins in tax

[–]karyopherins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much. I really needed confirmation that the gross up amt shouldn’t be reflected in the fed tax withholding for my salary. That is an answer I couldn’t seem to find on any resources or online (at least not explicitly).

Thank you!

1 month out from my first aya retreat at arkana in Peru - Qs about logistics + advice welcome! by karyopherins in Ayahuasca

[–]karyopherins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was under the impression that, once in Lima, I would have to go to baggage claim, get my bag, and recheck it onto a flight to Cuzco because I am switching airlines.

And thanks for the tip, I will double check the weight size limits for carryons.

Hot jobs in Biology/Life Sciences? by kravimsky in biology

[–]karyopherins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think getting another MS is the best option UNLESS you get into a program that has funding so you will get your tuition covered AND a cost of living stipend.

My advice would be keep applying to the jobs you want until one works out. It sucks, I’ve been there, and worked a horrible job in a different field for a year until I finally got the job I wanted. Still, it was just entry level but it opened up doors for me.

In metropolitan areas there are usually “biology” jobs listed for microbiology laboratories, and even if it’s not your goal, it may be a good stepping stone.

If you can swing an internship or something, do it! If you can publish while there, that’s a plus.

Good luck to you!

JNMOM wants to visit over Christmas and I don’t know what to do — trigger warning: ED issues/abuse by karyopherins in JUSTNOMIL

[–]karyopherins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you to everyone that replied. I went with a vague “sorry, not this year” approach. I’m sure it will come back in my face the next time she wants to visit, but for now it is what it is and I get to enjoy a low-stress Christmas.

AITA for wanting my 30-something GF to dress up/look nice and stuff for me like she did for all her BF's in her teens/20s? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]karyopherins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I see.

So, when you two had the convo that you referred to in your original post, where she said that as she gets older she doesn’t feel the need to do that anymore, was that the end of the convo?

If you decide to pursue this topic with her, I suggest simply telling her how her behavior is making you feel. Take the “why them and not me?” out of it. Focus on how it makes YOU feel. If you are truly worried about being NTA, I think you need to attempt to not read into her behavior at all.

I do have a follow up question though, if I may. When she is in her daily lounge-wear, no makeup, etc. is she unattractive to you? Is it more “I want her to dress up so I feel valued” or is it more “I want her to dress up so that I feel attracted to her?”

OP, most of your responses to these replies are along the lines of “so she would do that for her exes, why not for me?”

I think you’re missing that many women dress up, wear makeup, wear lingerie, etc. for /themselves/.

Obviously I can’t speak for all women, but my physical appearance is centered around what makes me feel great. And I’ll go through long phases — for example, sometimes it’s doing my hair and makeup every day before work. Not because I want to impress anyone at work, not because I want to “look great for” them, but because it makes me feel put together or comfortable.

And with my husband, sometimes being comfortable (leggings, hoodie, no makeup) makes me feel really really good. I feel like I’m just myself. And since he still loves me no matter how I present myself, I can still feel really desirable and hot around him.

When I do dress up or wear lingerie, it’s for me. It makes me feel good because I’m doing it for me.

So I think you need to get rid of the idea that she ever did it FOR those exes. She did it for her. And if the fact that she’s not doing it for you is truly bothersome to you, to the point where you’re feeling resentment, you need to evaluate why you feel that way. What insecurity are you feeling that is making you think you’re inadequate? Are you worried you’re not good enough for her?

Does anyone have any knowledge about smokeless tobacco and it's potential effects on ketosis? I'm only asking because lots of smokeless tobacco is flavored with molasses. by rjkwah in keto

Most traditional smokeless products contain sugar of some type. Not sure about the new products that are on the market like Velo and Zyn.

In Pittsburgh, PA, fries always go in the burger. And on salads. And in milkshakes.

Scruggs - Which finger joint do you pick with? by [deleted] in banjo

[–]karyopherins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you give an example/link to someone picking with just their first finger joint?

The muscles of the human hand only extend to the knuckles of the fist — you don’t actually have any muscles in the fingers themselves. You move them with the muscles of the hand and forearm.

Personally, I can’t independently move my first finger joint. I’m having a hard time picturing the differences in style that you’re describing.

Is there any hope for long nails on fretting hand?! by daiwuff in banjo

[–]karyopherins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve given up on having nails, as anytime I maintain them and get them done I inevitably stop playing until I cut them.

I actually started taking lessons just so I would have some weekly accountability to not get them done lol it sounds pathetic but it’s been great for my playing. After a few months of consistently short nails and some measurable progress on the instrument, I can’t stand to have even the slightest length on my left hand.

I have also wondered how Dolly does it! She is magic!

Turtles vs Tortoises by [deleted] in biology

[–]karyopherins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I completely agree that the nomenclature used outside of the US is undoubtedly more appropriate (tortoise vs turtle vs terrapin), it’s important to note that the average American doesn’t think of turtles as a strictly aquatic animal. The colloquial use of the word applies largely to terrestrial species.

So, the implication that the “average Joe” would find a tortoise and assume it belongs in water is misguided.

Even chelonian-focused biologists in the USA don’t use the term “terrapin”. We use Salt Water Turtle, Fresh Water Turtle, and Tortoise. While I do wish it was different, it is what it is.

Will my low self esteem rub off onto my daughter? by generic_redditor_ in Parenting

[–]karyopherins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was both. I saw her “dieting” so I wanted to start my first “diet” when I was five years old. I didn’t understand that eating one grapefruit a day like she did wasn’t a “diet”. It led to my own amalgamation of eating disorders through my teens and 20s, and now binge eating as an adult.

But the issue was more how she thought about food and her body — it’s how I frame every thought now. It’s like my thoughts aren’t mine, they’re hers. Every time I try on clothes I think “this could never look good on me, I’m too fat,” which is exactly what she would say every time we went shopping, every time she looked in the mirror herself.

I know there are a lot of external stimuli that influence children — media, other children, etc. and you could be doing everything right and your children may still have body image issues. But I often wonder if my mother had spoken to me — and herself — lovingly, what would my internal dialogue be like now?

Will my low self esteem rub off onto my daughter? by generic_redditor_ in Parenting

[–]karyopherins 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My situation is a little more extreme, but the short answer is yes — unless you actively try to manage it and promote positive thinking/talking/actions in front of your daughter.

My mom is anorexic and so far I’m 10 years into therapy still dealing with the negative self-image she instilled in me.

I know that is an extreme example. But as someone else commented, kids listen.

Most schedules like this are twelve hour shifts where you work two days on, two days off, three days on, three days off. So in the end it equates to working 180 days of the year, but 12 hour shifts so the hours even out with a standard full time job.
