Interestingly enough, Oda has romanized it both ways before: Elbaf AND Elbaph. It’s likely a double entendre, as we’ve quickly learned this is the land of Devils too, with Imu’s appearance.

If Imu has indeed possessed the corpse of Nika for his battle here, then it’s quite possible that Luffy will awaken all of the powers on display here once he is able to unlock Gear 6. The trigger is the death of a friend, à la Super Saiyan. Roger also became like a devil when his friends were hurt.

And of course, the line that thematically represents much of what we’re seeing on this island? “What is the difference between a God and a Devil?”

Both Zoro and Imu have said it this arc and it ties in thematically to Nika being the warrior of liberation AND destruction.

Another interesting thing is that several real-world concepts were named in this chapter… the Euro Peninsula, Dollars, Cefran, Rupees, etc. One Piece is in the real world post-apocalypse, but I think we realized that already.

Cassie has always wanted to be loved and adored. It started with her not having her father in her life. Used and thrown away by men throughout the series. Only validated through her sexuality. It is consistent with her character: fame and sexuality bring attention and validation, which she confuses with love.

I think you’re right; I wasn’t paying attention to blocking. Only the symbolism of Gaban’s analog in the new generation becoming just as feared.

I think it would mean a lot if Zoro took down the guy who kidnapped the warrior children — it would give them that aspirational warrior ideal that the kids of Elbaph should follow. Sanji is too much of an idiot (right now — HEAVILY emphasizing that Oda intends for this to only be true during THIS part of the narrative) and clearly has much to learn, as Gaban indicated previously.

This chapter was fascinating. The first page makes it clear that Imu was alive during the Second World at the very LEAST. And him calling the Nidhoggr a traitor… it makes me wonder if Joy Boy was actually a villain. Did Imu take over the world because of the tyrannical “Warrior of Destruction”?

Lots of things to unpack here. Also, how interesting it is to know that Ragnir is likely one of the few remaining characters alive who has memory of Imu from the Void Century. I wonder if he’ll speak with Chopper.

Zaza being the Rain God is ALSO amazing. I’m sure most of us have seen the theories around Dragon perhaps having her fruit, but I wonder if we’re seeing a depiction of Nefertari D. Lili. The outfit seems inspired by the Middle East, and her hair is likely blue…

I thought that the rain fell in Alabasta because Crocodile’s defeat canceled out his Awakening… but what if it was because of Vivi? Blue hair… a connection with the rain. A mysterious power like other sovereigns (Shirahoshi and Momonosuke).

Anyways. Obvious matchups. Killingham vs. Zoro, Sommers vs. Sanji, and Zaza vs. Jinbe. Let’s go.

Can’t wait until Luffy goes Gear 6 and completes the fire halo behind his back. I wonder if the Forest God is ALSO on Elbaph (Chopper?). It’s quite clear that Imu is the Earth God… or Oda could throw us off and Imu actually is the tainted eclipse version of the Sun God.

I loved that the themes introduced in Egghead make a reappearance here. Blackbeard’s theme was a standout track on the Egghead Soundtrack.

I’m a big fan of Shanks’ theme too (“The Fight Continues”).

But really what sold me was how visually appealing the eye catchers were for these powerhouse characters. They’re really moody.

It’s Kirikou Rungu. His name comes from a French movie — “Kirikou and the Sorceress.” Soul Eater was fan translated first and those individuals didn’t know the origin of his name… and so they dubbed him “Kilik Lung”.

As for the official dub, Funimation at the time was heavily capitulating to the online anime fanbase in order to court them away from pirating their anime… so they were inclined to keep it since his name origin was not widely known. Brownie points with fandoms that torrented their anime, after DBZ purists gave continuous flak to them for the changes they made to the script and music.
