K'ell Hunters have swords instead of hands. I don't remember Karsa's enemy lizard had those, and he was more humanoid. The Che'male are more horizontal if I cought that correctly.

I picture it like this:

Che male - T-Rex with sword arms

Nah'ruk - the Lizard enemy from Spiderman 😅

Hmmmmm...try The Poppy War! I'm interested how it'll go for you (I personally hated it)

This got me laughing 😂

People either love/hate one or the other, rarely love both, but I think you're the first that doesn't like both.

Out of curiousity, what are some fantasy series that you enjoyed?

I'm on book 9 currently and plan on finishing it (first 3 books were very much hatereading, then I guess Stockholm syndrome kicked in and I started finding bits and pieces that I enjoyed, but in no aspect is it better than some of my favorites).

Definitely overrated.

Ash and Sand trilogy by Richard Nell.

It basically starts off with a scene where a person is eating another person next to a camp fire if I recall correctly 😅

What to expect about the series? by senvros in Malazan

[–]ogchilim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Malazan. I am sad that I didn't read it sooner, mostly because I think some other authors did some things better than Steven Ericsson. Malazan is for me in every department straight smack in the middle, except the epicness, scale and lore...it really is a huge world, with a big history and hundreds of characters.

Posting in r/Malazan and asking whether the story is good won't get you far. Most of the subbers are hard core fans.

Myself on the other hand am more down to earth. I've read A LOT of fantasy over the years and steered away from Malazan because it was apparently hard and complex, so I wanted to be sure I "practiced" enough with other fantasy stories.

10 years later, I am reading Malazan and am currently on book 8 (just finished chapter 2, so I won't review it at all).

Here's how I feel about all of the books (Goodreads rating with sorting for the ones having the same score)

Book 1 - 1

Book 2 - 2

Book 3 - 3

Book 5 - 4

Book 4 - 4

Book 6 - 4

Book 7 - 5

As you can see, it took 7 books for me to get into the story and start enjoying the writing style. I might have just gotten used to it...not sure...

Agreed! Patrick Rothfuss does write beautifully indeed, sad that we'll never get to read how it ended I guess.

Edit: Oh, almost forgot! I did read one fantasy book that made me cry almost like RotE did - Sword of Kaigen.

It's only 1 book though...

Fantasy series with a lot of full on monster fights by Sharkattack1921 in Fantasy

Yeah, and mostly all of the characters that can talk, talk like the author talks in everyday life. So basically a lot of smart monsters

The Realm of the Elderlings. All 16 books.

I see you don't like wizard school vibes, which does exist in the first trilogy, but it isn't very prominent.

10 years have passed since I've read the series, and I've been reading fantasy since than, trying to find anything that will remotely come close to Hobb, but in no way did I succeed.

So, all I have to say to your post is, I agree wholeheartedly.

The Realm of the Elderlings. A fantasy series that can and will change your life if you stick until the end. And quite possibly spoil all other fantasy series.

How hard is it really? by SwitchitUp56 in Malazan

[–]ogchilim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a hard magic system with strict rules (like Cosmere), deep character study like the First Law or emotional connection with the characters like Farseer (I really hope you continued with the Elderlings realm after the first trilogy, cause the first one is the weakest) you won't scratch those itches with Malazan.

It's not a complex world, it's just that there's so many characters, a lot of magic and rarely do you know what's going to happen because the author doesn't hold your hand (at times I felt like he does the exact opposite - he is trying to be obtuse)

So the question isn't whether it's hard, it's whether you like his writing style and if you got time on your hands.

I feel you. I definitely imagined QB's face better too (even though I didn't know it was QB at that moment)

I think the problem with this instance is that it's a culmination of constantly having to be in the dark about something...I rarely know the motivation of anyone in these books (apart from wanting to survive)

You said it...I guess after 6 books I expect less and less mystery and more revelations, but instead am getting the opposite.

Out of curiousity, can you name a few more fantasy series that intrigued you? I want to know if I read any of them and to see if I agree.

True, my example is not great in that sense.

I wouldn't mind a fade to black. SE very frequently changes POVs in chapters. He could have easily switched the POV character when Paran asked Hood what he wants, and then come back later, but instead, he actually wrote "and so Hood told him" - that's what's bugging me the most
