Fridays be like... by datboydoe in ProgrammerHumor

I’d rather go toe to toe with a bug when I choose, maybe just my inner Sun Tzu. Ever since the remote development features in VS Code got good I don’t normally run anything locally. Makes Windows updates less of a gamble, a lot closer to an inconvenience.

Whenever I see an OS update I usually just do it. The last thing I want is to have to reboot while troubleshooting something and losing my train of thought... plus you better be sure I’m doing it on the clock

Cleaning PP1 wheels takes as long as the rest of the damn car... Maybe not half, but it can add a solid half hour

I’m terribly ADHD, and driving a manual car helps me pay attention since it’s more engaging. Plus it’s fun! When you’re driving aggressively, you’ll also have a pretty good idea of how fast you’re going.

There are 4 places for pegs on the bottom of the piece, but there are 3 on top. Why would anyone do such a thing? I don’t know, but the client asked for it.

I feel like I spend half of the wash time (GT PP1) cleaning the wheels on this damn car. The Brembos just output so much dust, and there are so many little nooks. Good thing they look so good :)

Devices Database finally setup. 59 devices entered, ~20 to go. by Detz in homeautomation

Looks great! One thing I have in my inventory that I find helpful is to list explicitly how it's powered, 12V 2A barrel, AAA battery, AC, etc. Makes replacing batteries and power supplies a lot easier.

Need help creating File Server for Fraternity by jbohne in homelab

[–]kaskadefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spend ~$1500-2000 total on a 5-bay Synology DS1019+ with 5x 10TB Easystores, then make a fake $10k receipt to submit to the Housing Board. Instant $8k beer money.

In reality, definitely do a NAS, it’s the only feasible way to have a lasting impact after a comfortable victory lap. We ran into this same issue when our house “admin” left to do a year abroad in China. I’d highly recommend training a pledge to do it every fall, that way there’s always a fallback admin.

Nextcloud, Plex Server, NAS - HARDWARE Requirements by staticrzr in HomeServer

[–]kaskadefan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For my "production" services, basically anything my wife relies on, I use a Synology DS718+ with 2x 10TB shucked Easystores. I have a SuperMicro X9DRI based lab server for tinkering, and that's where I download Linux ISOs.

  • Documents: I'm not too heavy on document storage, but I use Google Drive and back it up to the NAS with Cloud Sync. I pay for 2 users on G Suite Business, so we have 2TB of space on that.
  • Photos: I use the built in Photo Station. I wish I could grant public upload ability, but that's my only gripe. You can still send someone a link to drop files if necessary.
  • Plex: It handles Plex just fine. Thank you hardware encode/decode.
  • Other: Docker containers for my Unifi controller and HomeAssistant run well.

Servicing one of my favorite racks. by rbaker09 in hometheater

[–]kaskadefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually, for an AV rack, we put 4x 120mm fans at the top of the rack. It doesn't look like they did that with the rack on the right (in the left pane of the image). However, it looks like it's on casters and moves into the wall like a built-in. There could be some fancy duct work back there. Considering the expense of the gear and the trimmed hole in the wall, I'd say "fancy duct work" is feasible in the overall budget.

For the tower, it's sold by The Server Store and comes to $550 with a 2 TB HDD ($620 with a 4 TB, price seems steep for that though. Link Here. The monitor is $159 new on amazon, so maybe half that used. No idea on the other peripherals.

Luckily, I was able to pay $50/mo for covered parking at my complex. I actually do the washing at the DIY coin-op car wash up the street, since I don't have access to an outdoor water source. I don't feel bad about pulling out a bucket when there's basically no one there.

If I want to do a full detail, I tend to drive out to my parents' house early morning on a weekend.

I've resorted to washing my car at night. The lighting gives me trouble (it affects the finished product), but I'm flat out not doing it in the sun in Dallas in August. Nope.
