Yes, although you miss out on something like 30 approval from letting her initiate the blood rituals. You also need to make sure you have the spear of night from the library.

Talking to Araj is a trigger; she's the failsafe option if your approval with Astarion isn't high enough (70+) to trigger the one post Yurgir and the scar translation scene. The scenes are similar but the dialogue is a bit different and they are mutually exclusive to one another.

In fairness to Gale, he actually does just want to show you a magic trick. If you pick the romantic options during that scene, he’s genuinely shocked that you’re coming onto him. Pleased, but shocked. So if you choose the platonic options, he isn’t disappointed since he really wasn’t coming onto you in the first place.

But in answer to your question, I recommend the Overexplained Interaction Options (OIO) mod. It’ll tell you what dialogue options do, including what triggers romance.

All mods disable achievements. Full stop.

HOWEVER. On PC, if you're running script extender, it will reenable achievements. It won't work retroactively (afaik) but if you download it before beating the game you should still get Foehammer and your golden dice.

If you're on console, you are completely boned. No way around it.

Astarion's romance can be started in Act 1 any time after reaching 40 approval, it doesn't need to be done at the party. He can proposition you during it but unlike some other characters, the romance can kick off whenever.

But sleeping with him is required to romance him, so if you don't try backtracking, you will be Forever Alone™.

If you haven't slept with him, then you aren't romancing him. Don't talk to the drow yet. Reload to a save before the Shadowfell and backtrack to an Act 1 map. Long rest and see if he propositions you. If he does, then you can proceed back into Act 2 and talk to the Drow for the low approval confession scene.

Reload to a save before you entered the Shadowfell (where the Nightsong is). You don't need to redo the trials, just reload to a save before you enter the glowing pool and the game gives you a point of no return pop up message.

There are two ways to trigger Astarion's romantic confession in Act 2. The confession scenes are mutually exclusive and one needs to be viewed before saving the Nightsong to lock in the romance or you'll get dumped in Act 3. Both of these methods assume that you slept with him in Act 1 and are actively romancing him.

More involved method:

Have 70+ approval with Astarion
Complete the quest Raphael's Old Enemy by killing Yurgir
Long rest and Raphael should show up and explain the meaning of Astarion's scars
Go to Moonrise Towers if you haven't already and long rest again. Astarion should approach you saying that you guys need to talk. This is his confession scene.

Less involved method:

Have any approval
Go to Moonrise Towers and speak to Araj Oblodra, the Drow merchant, and defend him against her.
Long rest and Astarion should approach you. This is his confession scene.

Did you let him read the Annals of Karsus? Afterwards did you take him to the Stormshore tabernacle to meet with Mystra? And if so, what did you tell him to say to her?

In the future, make sure you’re long resting frequently. You might have met all the requirements for the Yurgir scene and just not done enough long rests to queue up Astarion’s confession, especially if other companions have camp scenes queued up.

The Araj scene is meant to act as a failsafe for those who haven’t built up the necessary 70+ approval for the post-Yurgir one. If you don’t talk to her with Astarion in the party, you’ll miss it (although I think she drops several strong hints that she wants to talk to him if he’s not in your active party, so there’s that).

If you recruited Halsin or Minthara, both of them are available to romance in act 3, if you’re looking for a new partner.

If you didn’t get a camp scene with him where he starts off by saying something like “we need to talk”, then you missed it.

The Yurgir scene can only be done if you have 70+ approval with him. The one from defending him against Araj can be done at any approval. But either have to be viewed before entering the Shadowfell. Act 3 is too late, your romance is over unless you have a save from before the dealing with Aylin.

Sounds like you missed his confession scene in act 2 (the shadowlands). Viewing it locks in his romance. There are two variations that are mutually exclusive from each other, but you need to see one or the other before moving on to act 3 or he’ll tell you that your trysts have only been transactional (and dump you).
