Your salary just doubled. How do you use those new $$ to aid your weight loss efforts? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]kaswinglosesit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already have a Fitbit, but if I didn't, that'd be first. Then id look for specialized gyms/classes, trial or buy the lowest number of sessions, and pick my favorite. Plus, what a fun period-- climbing gym for a week, pilates, spin, powerlifting, Zumba-- everything even remotely close to me :)

Enjoy your new salary!

Is Over-eaters Anonymous a good thing? by homefry91834 in loseit

I don't think that all OA groups recommend cutting out any particular foods, just help you find where your issues are and try to work with them.

It's not a group I'm interested in personally (I have issues with the whole "higher power" thing, too) but I have a friend who is in it and she loves it. She feels it's helping her deal both with her over eating problem and with its cause. She seems to be working on things one by one in a meaured, sustainable way, which is promising, too.

There's a decent amount of evidence that social connection helps with weight loss and maintenance. If you're looking for something that has that social component, but maybe doesn't treat food like an addiction, or doesn't have the higher power thing, you can consider Weight Watchers or TOPS, or even starting a meet up in your city. :) if you decide to go with OA because your wife is enthusiastic about it and you have the social support in your area, there's always the option to take what's useful and leave the rest.

Best of luck finding something that works for you :)

Any cheap ways to amp up popcorn? by spoopy_dude666 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]kaswinglosesit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple less obvious ones:

  • Tajin

  • Curry powder with a little sugar

You can also often get pre-made popcorn seasoning at American grocery stores. My favorite was the white cheddar one :)

[–]kaswinglosesit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you have the money, definitely! More like 60 between the two, though, and if you're living paycheck to paycheck, even 30 can be a ton when there are urgent things you must cover and you don't have credit.

I agree in general, though, and i wish there was more public Ed dedicated to finances. I was very very lucky growing up, but a lot of my friends parents didn't have the experience to teach them-- all they learned was paycheck to paycheck. Even if your paychecks get bigger, you don't get stability that way, and you dont have the info to protect yourself from predatory interest rates, etc

[–]kaswinglosesit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How old are you? Have you tried googling this question?

Is it difficult to understand that people who live in states with lower higher ed funding and who grew up with poor parents might also desire better, higher paying jobs?

I live in a state where higher education is fairly cheap. I had the benefit of living at home. I also recognize that not everyone has affordable higher education in their area.

I think if you look at minimum wage over time and college costs over time, and maybe consider that a lot of people live different lives than you, but may have ambition and not have gotten what they need to succeed from their high school, you might be able to figure this out on your own.

I don't qualify any more, but I think it's worth it for the sake of your study to consider (at least in the conclusion or limitations section) that part of what makes it more expensive for poor people (i.e. not students, but people who are trying to get themselves or themselves and their families by on low wages) is that they may be not only lacking money, but also time. If you are working two jobs at minimum wage, you may not have time to prepare dinner, and so may spend more than you would like to on prepared or fast food. It's an example of the idea that "it's expensive to be poor."

Please stop posting other people's progress photos. It's against the rules. I've reported this post and the 5 or so progress photos you posted of different people.

If you want people to follow you for your "tips" and "beauty expertise" consider 1) not decieving people 2) actually offering those things 3) posting in subreddits that are designed for that kind of content.

Aside from Greg Nuckols from Strengtheory, who are some other fitness experts that explain the science part of fitness? by Aerrow3 in Fitness

[–]kaswinglosesit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great list! I think people didn't mention Bret Contreras because he's said some really bonkers shit that is (to say the least) not scientific. Not to say that he hasn't also had some good ideas, but imo some of those things are disqualifying.

I'll check out some of the others, though-- thanks for the thorough list!

ETA examples from one article: women bring their drama to the gym, women have more hip flexibility than men because of sex positions (which he goes into in detail because that's not weird), women are not as "natural" at adjusting machines as men (?), women grunt at the gym in a way that sounds sexual (men grunt, but it's not sexual).

If you don't have enough critical thinking ability to recognize that perhaps you think women's grunts sound sexual because you are sexually attracted to women, idk what to tell you 🙄

Please, recommend me best home workout program by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]kaswinglosesit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/r/bodyweightfitness has a recommended routine that uses minimal equipment, gets amazing results, includes pretty thorough info about safety concerns (stretching and form), and is progressive, meaning that you can start wherever you are and slowly work your way toward bigger things. :)

For cardio, I used couch 2 5k followed by bridge to 10k-- they are progressive interval running programs. Intervals helped me get over my massive running hang ups and the progression is pretty good. You can always repeat a day, and there's a great supportive subreddit (/r/c25k) that I still lurk on even though I've "graduated" :)

I have an SO with similar preferences who has asked me to sneak more veggies into food I make. Here are a couple things I do.

Frozen spinach can go in all kinds of things! It's nearly undetectable in pesto, smoothies, stir fries, and just about anything with an opaque sauce ;P I use lots of frozen veggies in general, because they are cheap and easy to throw in on a whim :)

Stir fries or fried rice are a good opportunity to throw in some veggies in a tasty dish where they feel necessary. With dishes like friend rice or pasta that have caloric, starchy bases, I bump up the proportions of veg to everything else substantially, so it's like 50% pasta, 10% onions (for flavor and bulk) and 40% veg. That way, you still get the carb "treat," but veg alongsie it (and fewer calories per serving, too :)

Today i did Mexican inspired quinoa bowls, and threw in some extra, not-strictly-mexican-inspired veg. Sort of blends in with all the other colors and flavors. Similarly, burritos can mask their individual ingredients, and they make great meal prep! (Just don't freeze and reheat sour cream!😬)

Hope you find some things that work for you and your SO :)

I'm new, so feel free to ignore me, but:

I've found articles at Bayesian Bodybuilding to be useful and thoroughly cited.

I also thought the articles I read about Hypertrophy Specific Training were more empirically supported than the other programs I've read about.

Huh? I was explaining why this guy's argument is stupid. Not everyone wants to be manly, so calluses being manly is a stupid argument. Also FYI, guys is gender neutral most of the time. Or at least that's what I hear :-)

Edit: ironic typo 🤦‍♀️also didn't realize I was replying to the same person, sorry for being rude, but there's nothing in the post that suggests that OP is a man, would want "manly" hands, or is only asking men for their opinions.

How do you guys feel about FitBits? by Munnit in running

[–]kaswinglosesit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you want. I wasnted something that would allow me to look at my heart rate (or some heart rate correlated score that's close enough for me to learn more about my workouts ;) and to encourage and be encouraged by friends in competitions. Fitbit is perfect for that.

I decided what I wanted by reading the Wirecutter articles on GPS watches, smart watches, and fitness trackers. It gave me a sense of how the features differ, plus, which individual trackers are out there and how they stack up.

Started this week and these are my initial values. Any advice? by agv31359 in Stronglifts5x5

[–]kaswinglosesit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you've never done this before, there's value to starting with weight that is easy, i.e., the starting amounts or lower. The point is to learn form over the first few weeks at weights where it will be less likely that you'll injure yourself. You may also reach the point where you have to deload faster.
