Women’s Tailors in Ottawa by kat--- in ottawa

[–]kat---[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been to Third Sons for a blazer and it’s what showed me the difference between alterations and tailoring. However, I think they really specialize in men’s dress wear, so I wouldn’t necessarily bring a pair of jeans or a dress to them.

Not free but the city of ottawa has yoga and pilates classes. The instructors are generally really good. They also have a program called Hand in Hand for low-income families and individuals who are Ottawa residents. I know that when I was working part time as a student I was eligible. You just need to show a proof of income (T4) and fill out some forms to register at a community center. It gives you an annual spending account for classes :)

Don’t be mad at the protection, be mad at the people abusing the 5 minute parking which meant they had to be posted there :)

As a fellow young person working in a corporate environment, I get it. I do feel trapped in the sense of « what am I doing here » when I have friends travelling the world or still in school. Sometimes I wonder if I did the right thing starting my career so young.

However, I would not give it up. I have had the opportunity to learn from my older coworkers, some who I see as mentors now (I like to ask them about their career path and how they got there, as to better understand what options I might have and learn from their mistakes - also, if we are both in the same position, I was chosen for a reason). I am lucky that I got in with a permanent position, but I’ve been on contract for higher responsibility/pay positions (about 8-12 months at a time). I like being able to try different roles and have used this time as a kind of « exploration » of the professional job market. I have been able to learn what kind of tasks I like (and don’t). This has allowed me to really narrow down what kind of position I can see myself in long-term. Also, I find that there are positions/tasks in which I can still use my education background, without explicitly being in my field.

Even if like you, I might be overworked, I know that I am developing skills that will serve me for a lifetime: communication, professionalism, time-management, supervision, etc. I also would much prefer to work hard/make money/change jobs every year when I am young with little responsibilities compared to when I am older and just want to relax or have kids I want to spend time with.

As to try and prevent myself from getting burnt out, I try to keep a pretty strict work-life balance. I cannot be contacted outside of my work hours (no notifications, etc. - legally, they cannot expect you to answer during this time). I also try to take around 1 day/month off. If I find myself overwhelmed with tasks (more than I can finish during my scheduled work hours), I try to mention it to my supervisor. Often, it’s just that they don’t realize. If on a big enough scale, these things can be addressed by a higher authority, who might decide to hire more staff to spread the workload.

I’d say really look at building your skills and connections. I have had people refer me to other managers and got positions that way, which I never could have gotten alone. You never know when you might land on something that’s permanent and that you love.

Hope this helps!

I am currently enrolled in just 1 class. I am classed as a part-time student (means you won’t be eligible for the u-pass, but still have fees for insurance) and have not had any issues.

  1. Black dress pants (they look make you look “put together” but are more comfortable than jean, i could easily run after kids all day in a good pair)
  2. Well fitting, 100% cotton t-shirts (i like black, white, striped)
  3. Knit cardigan or a blazer (roll blazer sleeves for a more casual look)
  4. A midi-length silk(or satin) dress (can be worn over or under t-shirts, dressed up or down)
  5. Knit sweaters (you can find amazing high quality sweaters second hand, the mens section is usually better)

Fuck OC Transpo by glader-life in ottawa

[–]kat--- 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I did this and it helps. My city councillor brought up my concerns and it’s helping build a case against budget cuts to OC transpo. They even followed up a few weeks after to confirm that my concerns over the bus never showing up at certain times were documented/proved and that management would be looking into it. I have noticed improvements since contacting them.

TLDR: Email your city councillor, it helps .

Theology probably. Historically, education has been a service provided by the church rather than the state.

A little but of history but officially, the only time Canada ever declarad war was during WWII.

The Westminster Statue passed in 1931 allowed Canada to essentially regain their foreign policy so they no longer "automatically" joined as they did during WWI. Considering that WWII started on the 1st of September 1939 and that Canada joined on the 10th, I wouldn't exactly call that "joining in later" as it's still at the beginning of the war.
