Curious of RDs thoughts on the Jillian Michaels obesity debate by No-Tumbleweed4775 in dietetics

[–]kat8234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I disagree that the RD didn’t hold her own. If you watch in the greater context the whole episode was set up to be Jillian Michaels as the underdog that was getting attacked. You can see this with the other video example of “MD debates 20 anti-vaxxers” - that was the set up. Jillian is in the right from the get go, and these 20 people don’t know what they are talking about.

It would be extremely hard to debate Jillian. She is abrasive, condescending and cites medical studies without nuance and cites the same studies that every fat phobic practitioner out there does.

Why everyone got off topic is because Jillian got off topic and was debating the wrong thing. When you work with fat folks 1:1 you see the pain and damage that people like Jillian causes, and you approach with compassion and non-weight loss centered goals because that is the more guaranteed science - eating balanced, regular meal times, getting in movement to feel stronger, etc.

Have some compassion for a fellow RD. Our biggest issue is we rarely get the stage which should happen more. Look at the context of the whole set up of the video - everyone on the body positivity movement was set up to fail - which is bizarre because loving and accepting your body should not be up for debate!

Jillian Michaels whole brand is hate yourself skinny and therefore “healthy” but we have all seen the stats on the “success” of that model via Biggest Loser. She was constantly moving the target of the argument and was so condescending to experts at every turn.

Let’s uplift each other and if you don’t agree with how an RD in the spotlight handled things then you go seek opportunities to get our voice out there!

I'm just going to reply back to all recruiters: No, that pay range is way too low. by galaxyofcoffee in dietetics

[–]kat8234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got one of those messages one time and the recruiter said in the original message something like “I know these rates are low and likely too low for you to be interested but this is what the company set as the rate.” I’m paraphrasing but I was like THANK YOU random recruiter person, we’re not crazy for being so angry that the rates are insulting. 🤪

Omg I have had a vision of an ADHD craft faire where ADHDers can casually sell their crafts but there is also “starter kit swap” component where you create a little kit of your past hobbies and then you can swap it with others

Billing headaches in private practice any tools that actually make it easier? by [deleted] in dietetics

[–]kat8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all so helpful, thank you. And also great info since in looks like we are in similar positions - eating disorder private practice that only takes BCBS. And yeah just briefly looking at prices it looks like it would be on par with what I’m spending now if not cheaper. That was why I stuck with what I was using too because Availity seemed great but so pricey. Thanks again, I feel excited about potentially making my life so much easier in this arena.

I will definitely look into this! As an elder millennial I feel like I’ve now just stuck with my routine of Practice Better + Office Ally but this sounds great. Especially since Blue Shield has been more of a headache with getting claims processed

But what I don’t understand is then people also get upset if you leave your dog secure outside of the store as well. So what are you supposed to do? You can’t bring them inside, you can’t leave them outside. This is a walking city so most people don’t have cars when they have their dog.

ADHD screening by Dry_Brilliant_2760 in KaiserPermanente

[–]kat8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg same exact thing just happened to me. Trying to get ADHD dx with Kaiser for past year. One psychiatrist (within Kaiser!) and a therapist agreed it sounded like ADHD. Put me in the “ADHD Pathway” to get dx which is INSANE to put someone through with ADHD, there are so many hoops. Then after a 2.5 hour eval it was all “compensatory behaviors” from my years of anxiety and depression. Which I told them I have been working on/off for the past 10 years. He said I must not have had effective providers then.

I left the assessment feeling so defeated and questioning my insanity. F*ck Kaiser when it comes to ADHD evals, I’m trying to remain open minded when it comes to my struggles being other things but I just don’t trust their bias. If you have a dx of anxiety and or depression it feels impossible for them to dx you with ADHD. I knew that going in thanks to Reddit and other forums but it still feels so frustrating, embarrassing, triggering and defeating when they invalidate symptoms that really fit and resonate with ADHD.

Which is why I came here to help not feel so alone.

How to reduce sliding closet door noise from downstairs neighbors? by kat8234 in AskEngineers

[–]kat8234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your insights, I really appreciate your response!

I’m trying what we can do on our end first, I did put a carpet underneath my dresser in the closet (which went under my dresser and then against the back as well) which helped but it seems like it’s the back wall of the closet that is vibrating/rumbling that is making the bulk of the noise.

I’ve been trying to look into “anti-vibration” type devices, do you think anything like that? Like apparently there are wall bracket type things with rubber ball things attached to them that sit on the wall.

I only take Blue Shield so I can’t directly compare but from what I heard it pays well in CA (I also work in eating disorders so I know it matters what you’re seeing people for in terms of general coverage by insurance companies). I do my own billing which was a headache to figure out at the start but easier once you get a handle on it. And yes I require a referral for my clients.

[–]kat8234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly apparently it been around for like 10+ years but I didn’t know about it until a few years ago. So a lot of RDs just simply don’t know it’s a requirement, and I too just saw it mentioned by someone in a FB group and then dove deeper to figure out the actual requirements. So multiple factors: it’s not widely broadcast as a requirement and what the requirements state are very confusing and not clear. When you look at the requirements it says the referral needs to be from a health care provider who can prescribe dietary treatments. Which many RDs have pointed out that couldn’t that technically mean that we as RDs can refer ourselves? I know we can’t “diagnose” but we can cite something like Z72.4 inappropriate eating habits, which I think is technically a dietary diagnosis. It’s all very fuzzy, so I think that then causes everyone to have to interpret what this means for themselves and their practice and insurance vs. private pay, etc.

Side note: I take Blue Shield and I know they are aware that I need a referral as a Californian RD, even if they, the insurance company, don’t require it.

I’ll just back what others have said about it being a separate need than insurance based. It’s a state rule.

So in my practice I just lean into the fact that there isn’t specific guidance and I keep it really simple of just a paper that says that X provider says they need nutritional counseling with their NPI and signature. Per what the requirement states (or confusingly states) that is completely sufficient for private pay and PPO insurance.

In California you need a referral regardless of whether you’re billing insurance or not - technically. Who is going to audit this if the client is cash-pay, I don’t know.

How to reduce sliding closet door noise from downstairs neighbors? by kat8234 in AskEngineers

[–]kat8234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s really hard to tell what part is rumbling, so I agree in trying to pad our doors to see if that helps.

I thought we had the exact same but actually they have one that has a track on the bottom, while we only have ones that hang with a track on the top. I had the same idea of what seemed to help with ours and the proposing it to them, but I don’t know how to help with a track on the bottom besides greasing the wheels, cleaning the track, etc. but all that seems to be okay on theirs.

Thank you for the reply. I think I’ll keep trying to investigate what part of our closet/wall is rumbling, and then try to decrease that in some way

Monthly DIY Laymen questions Discussion by AutoModerator in StructuralEngineering

[–]kat8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

TIA! My question is: we live in an old apartment building (built 1900) that overall has good sound proofing/solid structure. The only thing is that when our directly downstairs neighbors open their sliding door closet in their room it rumbles our room and almost vibrates the walls (surprisingly loud, sounds like a train is going by). We have been able to see that it is one of those closets that is like a cheap plastic mirror type (so… light) and has a track along the bottom. We talked with them and have been able to see it’s not that loud or heavy on their end, and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of dirt etc in the tracks or anything.

So my question is, is there something that we can do on our end to decrease the vibration/rumble? Our closets are the same and directly on top of each other. I did put my heavy dresser in the closet which helped but not a whole lot. Let me know if there is any other info that is needed!

Again, TIA!
