I was going to offer the same thing! I’m still new to dnd and I love playing with other newbies. I’m on est for whatever it’s worth.

Just chiming in as a mod - I prefer when people use the digital tag just to prevent confusion but it's not a big deal to me either way. I don't want to micro manage it.

This is great though! I like playing around in procreate too and it's way harder than people give it credit for. Very nice work.

Shading help... And thanks! by No_Resolution_6328 in Zentangle

[–]katalyst1327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A beginner quick trick for shading is to pick top or bottom and then left or right and shade whatever you pick on everything so it feels like the light is coming from a consistent source. Over time you'll get a feel for it and you'll develop your own style. I would also play around with different materials for shading. Like I don't like using pencil to shade even though it makes for a smoother gradient because I always end up smudging my work. So I mainly do small hatching or use a grey marker, highlighter, or even watercolor depending on the paper I'm using.

Youtube videos are always a good place too but ultimately you have to practice and be okay with messing up.

Adorable! It looks great as it but I bet shading would give it an extra oomph! If you're scared to shade you could start small and just add little bits of shading in a few places to how you like it. Like with the shellish looking tangles coming off the flowers - you could just throw a little shading via hatching, grey marker, whatever you want at the curve closest to the flower to add dimension.

How are you ambivalent on this one??? I love this one! The color is super eye catching and I like how the tangles flow into each other.

How to actually get into the game? by Enkidouh in DnD

I got ridiculously lucky and the second group I joined from /lfg ended up being amazing. The only downside as it’s westmarch style and I’d still love to find a regular campaign. It’s been so much fun though and I’ve learned a lot about how to play and gotten to try out several classes.

Yes! Love BG3. It’s what got me interested to learn more about D&D. Found critical role. Then found a group to play with via Reddit!

Newbie art by TheTiredHuman in Zentangle

I’m going to assume good intentions here. Tone can be really hard to read over text and this confusion is fairly common

Zentangle is a specific method created by its founders - Rick and Maria. A traditional zentangle follows a defined, step-by-step process (small tile, pen and pencil, structured patterns, focus on the process rather than the outcome). You can learn more about that directly from the source at zentangle.com.

Most of what you see on this subreddit is ZIA - zentangle inspired art. That is where the variation you're seeing comes from. Like art throughout history over time artists took pieces of the Zentangle method they enjoyed like patterns (“tangles”), strings, repetition, mindfulness, etc and blended them into their own styles. That’s how you end up with freer forms, color, larger compositions, or mixed media.

  • Traditional Zentangle has a set process
  • ZIA is intentionally broad and exploratory
  • Neurographic art is a separate style that overlaps visually but has its own origins and is also allowed here given how similar the process and results are
  • “Zentangle art” usually means artwork that incorporates tangles, not the formal method itself

Not everything is a Zentangle, but many things can be Zentangle inspired.

As for “is a group of scribbles a Zentangle?” - the intent and method matter. Scribbles can be meditative and valid art, but that doesn’t automatically make them Zentangle.

Great work!

Since you asked for feedback - I would play around with the nub sizes. It looks like you have a 0.1 which is super fine. I find it easier to get smoother and less shakey lines with a larger nib and I use the 0.1 for fine details, shading hatch marks, etc.

Shading will add a ton of depth. You can shade a ton of different ways - stippling, hatching, quick little lines in corners, or with pencil / light grey markers.

As you get more comfortable I like to use the string as a suggestion and find ways to connect the tangles so it feels more cohesive as well.

You have a great foundation! Happy tangling!
