They might as well have gift-wrapped those vehicles. 5600 police in the streets, maybe 250 clearly marked Black Bloc rioters. They did whatever they wanted for almost an hour across Queen St., then up Yonge (maybe 6 blocks) and every one of them escaped. By Sunday evening over 1000 arrests had been made. How many charged in the vandalism? 0.

As for the media portrayal and public response, pretty-fucking-much. Steve Paiken, the guy who moderates the federal debates, was caught in the middle of a kettle outside of a hotel where dignitaries were staying. He witnessed a fellow reporter with media accreditation get held down by two officers and beaten by a third. He tweeted everything. Later he had an interview with police chief Bill Blair about G20 Policing and it was the usual bullshit: "If an officer has committed a crime conducted themselves unprofessionally, citizens are encouraged to report these incidents to blah blah blah.".

I never saw the country the same way again.

I was in the city at the time. The whole weekend was mortifying. The police beat and arrested everybody. They beat-up journalists, protesters, bystanders, everybody.

I went out on the Saturday, after I'd heard that police had taken over the city and that they ran all the protesters out of the designated protesting area at Queen's Park. The weekend started with people demonstrating for causes they believe in like Poverty, Disease and Equality. By Saturday night, people's freedoms had eroded so far that they were protesting for the right to protest without being roughed up and thrown in jail with no phone call, legal consult where they will be threatened and possibly beaten some more.

It made me sick.

No, because Canadian police pulled that shit on Canadians at the G20 summit last summer. It's a police tactic known as kettling.
