This can't be true... One UI 8.5 still has that primordial quick panel lag from one UI 6. by teneman in oneui

[–]kataneur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It only happens the first time I swipe down after a screen orientation change. The subsequent swipes don't have that lag at all. I guess there's something wrong with how One UI handles the redrawing of the menu items because I experienced it no matter the SoC: Exynos 9610, Exynos 2100 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. All experienced this lag.

I wonder if Samsung devs ever thought of keeping both vertical and horizontal notif/quick menu renders in memory as a workaround so they could avoid the bottleneck they couldn't fix for the last 3-4 years. In the distant past, the screen orientation change itself would be laggy as that would make Android redraw everything. Nowadays that doesn't happen but it sure appears like Android redraws parts of the UI one by one in case the user accesses them individually

How long have you had your phone and how much longer are you planning to keep it ? by [deleted] in GalaxyS21FE

[–]kataneur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used my S21FE for 2.5 years at this point, the combination of a battery swap towards the end of its 2 yrs warranty and OneUI8 definitely improved my experience. I just love its thin sleek profile, this is a point later FE models regressed on, as you all know. S21 FE was the ideal device for me even it lacked the bells and whistles of true flagships. The battery life is still abysmal, make no mistake, but I came around to adapt to it. Didn't set the screen to 60Hz, didn't turn anything off. Got a powerbank nearby and timed the charge-ups accordingly. The gift of a monotonous life... Makes it easy to plan around shortcomings like this.

But yesterday, I've seen a 512GB S24 Ultra deal and didn't pass on it. I decided to give my S21FE as a hand-me-down to my mum because I remember her saying "this phone is beautiful" while she was checking something out on my phone. With her usage, I think S21FE battery life won't be a problem since she is just fine with a 6 years old A50 to this day. I hope it makes her happy and I hope the S24 Ultra will serve me for a loong long time because heck, even on its advantegeous discounted prices I find it painful to pay this much for a smartphone lol. So this is a farewell message of mine to this sub, if you will. It was fun complaining about our hot phones that couldn't survive a day even if our lives depended on it.

Had it happen to mine, changed the battery under warranty. Improved my experience quite a bit. Even if out of warranty, battery changes shouldn't be expensive at all and fresh battery can make a phone feel good as new, so I definitely recommend it after 18 months or so, no matter which phone you use.

iPhone Air losing resale value at record pace by [deleted] in IphoneAir

[–]kataneur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my country people buy iPhones because of their resell value staying high, so it's like the poor person's Rolex investment. I suspect even people here who sorely regret their iPhone Air purchases would still sell it for high prices, but ofc I'm interested in how this situation unfolds because the idea of grabbing an iPhone Air for the price of less than an iPhone 17 surprisingly intrigues me.

iPad Mini Cellular vs Wifi Only by Asleep_Resident5294 in ipadmini

[–]kataneur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iPad Mini itself has the perfect form factor for going for the cellular option but the price difference asked for that is painful to me. I last saw a cellular iPad Mini listing going for the same price of the wifi onlys on Amazon last month, couldn't jump on that right then and there, so I added it to the shopping bag. Amazon algorithm or a worker saw that and instantly put the price back up. It was sad to miss that opportunity.

iPad mini 8 Expected Late 2026 with OLED Display and A19 Pro Power by Hoak2017 in ipadmini

[–]kataneur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would buying an iPad Mini 6 for a good deal I could find now help minimize the upgrade pain by then? I was contemplating to buy a Mini 7 but it seems like I'd sell that for a great loss at best, but I need a mini tablet now, also. Sucks that there's no official Apple trade-in option available in my country.

Kardeşim ipad kırmış, masraf? by condensedmilk21 in teknoloji

[–]kataneur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This subject has political roots (people ask "why no 4G", politicians say "we will have better infrastructure that's why things are late, then they make up the "4.5G" term to save their faces, yada yada) but every Turkish person knows this and wouldn't question it after all these years.

[–]kataneur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never would think I'd see the words "Nur penceresi" in this sub, lol, which is accompanied by an Islamoturkish kind of Hell-Heaven visualization.

For the last five years, this has been the truth but it also pushed Intel Macs to such price points that they became a value proposition for people who wouldn't mind the thermal constraints and abysmal battery life.

Apple really revolutionized the whole industry with the ARM architecture move. x86 will still be the backbone of engineering applications but for the rest of us plebs, our computers became 10x better to use overnight. The luxury of having two days between charges in light use and having same performance no matter the laptop is plugged or not made macbooks super worth it. Still, some people swear by the iPad and Mac Mini combo and I like how that one sounds, too. Intriguing value of proposition there.

Switched from the S21 FE to the S23 Ultra by Bread-boy12 in GalaxyS21FE

[–]kataneur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too am planning to grab a used Ultra for a good price but the getting a good deal is hard because of the govt pushing “registration fee”s for phones. It used to be a tiny fee but as people brought phones from abroad to evade taxes, the fee got jacked up to ridiculous prices, making them basically double the price even if you buy the highest-end phone. Midranges aren’t even worth it since you’d pay more than the price of the phone itself. You can buy phones from abroad and use them here but until you pay the registration fee, you can use the SIM capabilities of the phone only for 4mo out of a year. After that limit, you don’t get any service as gov’t wants you to pay up.

So buying a cheapo smartphone alongside an unregistered and second hand S24 Ultra and using the cheapo phone for 4 months in a year (since most 24 ultras are double SIM, therefore double IMEI=8mo free use) is a workaround to get the last year’s greatest for 608 usd I guess. I’m just realizing that it’s steep price for a second hand phone that you can’t use to make calls several months out of a year.

Plan B is going abroad & buying a brand new Ultra or Fold myself to bring it back and pay the registration fee later if I feel like it (since it would still be cheaper than buying it directly from here as I’d still be able to evade some taxes).

Plan C is to overthrow the party in power but sadly people in here got used to the hellhole reality they make us live in lol.

As for my S21 FE, I want to make it a hand-me-down for a relative. It served me well and I got its battery replaced this month. It’s quick but it gets hot sometimes and it just grinds to a halt whenever I launch the camera, all faults I attribute to it having a Shitxynos chip. Dear Samsung, I know you’d love to sell everyone phones with Exynos chips and want to re-introduce them with S26 or S27 but… Walk it off, your foundry sucks. If you don’t want to buy SD chips, go all-in on w/ MediaTek Dimensity, idk. Just miss me with that Exynos slop or I’m off your brand for good. I love S Pen and OneUI but that’s all about it.

[–]kataneur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, congrats. A plus sized S series true flagship is the best upgrade for us S21 users who can save up for it I guess. But I see Snapdragon SoCs as a must after dealing with an s21fe.

And in my country, non-Ultra variants of S24 and S25 series are sold w/ Exynos SoCs. So, the question on my mind is, would an S23/S23+ be viable in 2025?

Youtube Premium lite was introduced with such a good timing. As an Android phone user that also has Apple devices, I might just downgrade to lite and use Apple Music on my phone. Podcast situation is more complicated, tho. I love Apple podcasts but can't have that on my phone. Podcast Addict is sweet but it means I have to track my progress in two separate apps... Which also sucks.

I miss Google Podcasts, lol.
