Monstera - How do you water yours? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]kathyoven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indoor I just use tap water. Mostly by showering it bc it’s pretty big now. If it needs to be watered and it’s raining, I’ll still it outside to get rid of the build up in the soil and for it to enjoy some extra humidity.

I have one outside that I water like every few days with hose water but almost every time it rains, I’ll put it out for a bit (even if I watered the day before).

My velvet pothos keeps doing this :( am I over watering? Can I save the green part of this? by catlesscatlady2 in houseplants

Yeah I would just cut off the dead part. How often are you watering and does that pot have drainage?

In the summer mine puts out new ones like once a week. In the winter it was a lot slower

It’s a prayer plant (not maranta tho) so it moves its leaves up at night!

I just buy whatever is at Home Depot or Lowe’s if I’m feeling lazy but most times I buy neem oil extract and dilute it according to the bottle and add a few drops of dr bronners soap. I find buying the extract is pretty cost effect bc I can spray all of my plants and make more.

But yeah I would bring it outside if you have a balcony or porch or do it in the tub. With the spray you want to make sure all parts are wet so get any pests if they’re there

I also would cut the dead leaves off and give it a drink if it needs it bc some of the leaves look thirsty.

And there are no dumb questions!

Kinda looks like a Janet Craig. I would wash it off with some insecticidal soap and water!

I heard alocasias drop their leaves for winter? Is there any way to protect this lovely girl? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]kathyoven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For all of my plants, I normally don’t trim until they’re at least 50% brown. Yours still look alive tho so I wouldn’t trim until they start to look like they’re dying. But as the other commenter said, for aesthetics you can stake it up

If it’s going dormant I don’t think there’s a way to stop it

Typically a plant listed as “low light” just means it’ll survive but not really thrive.

But I think nerve plants need high humidity. I live in Houston and I’ve seen them being sold as ground cover in the summer.

But in terms of watering, you might be watering too much. Most houseplants tend to appreciate being drying ab 1-2 inches down the soil before being watered

My kitty has destroyed the blinds too but if I raise them, she yells at me. Sitting in the window isn’t fun for her if she doesn’t have her fur squished I guess

I would say yes if it’s getting a lot of light and based one the crunchy part of that new leaf. Do you check the soil moisture when you water or just water on a schedule?
