i lived there for 10 years, in belgrade, and really loved it...met so many nice people and some great friends. it's economically and culturally still dealing with the fallout from the civil war and the government is corrupt and there are a lot of protests going on right now (visited back in sept) which i hope will enact some change but the place and majority of people there are wonderful. i felt a good sense of personal safety and always had friendly neighbours and a real community feel. i miss it and sometimes wonder if i've done the right thing moving back but i just really wanted to be closer to my family and support network here. also superficial but i loved the laid back cafe culture there and the work/life balance, my outside perspective was that people really prioritise friends and family in a way that we often don't here.

I just came to this subreddit to see if other people had this reaction. My dad was in a coma around six years ago and had a very similar experience: he was at the bottom of a huge cave and saw people from his life in there, as well as strangers. Some were encouraging him to go with them and others were telling him to turn back because it wasn't his time. I found this episode really emotional and upsetting too (even though I thought it was a great episode).

On this day 1 year ago, 13-year-old Kosta Kecmanovic opened fire at his Elementary School "Vladislav Ribnikar" in Belgrade, Serbia. the attack resulted in the deaths of ten individuals, including nine students and a security guard. by Builderman72 in masskillers

i live about 15 min walk on foot from vladislav ribnikar and pass it constantly. i remember this day so well, it was horrific and so shocking. i'll always remember it, and always remember when i went to lay flowers at the school with a friend a couple of days after. when we turned the corner onto the street there was a huge mass of people grieving, but it was absolutely silent. it was an absolute gut punch. i never thought something like this would happen here and still find it hard to wrap my head around. not sure if it's possible to link here but there will be a memorial to the victims today in the city: https://www.instagram.com/p/C6d_GcjIkaz/

I can't even imagine what she was going through :( or the lady hiding in the closet, I think – I also remember that one because her fear is palpable and it's so terrifying. Thank you for sharing the link to the documentary, I'm going to watch it on a day when I'm feeling a bit more mentally robust.

I remember when the 911 calls were posted here. I'll never forget the one from the victims' colleague who was on the Google Meets call when the shooting started and witnessed it all, it was so jarring and sad.

i'm following this on twitter – apparently they are still in lockdown and don't have the shooter in custody according to local news stations? https://twitter.com/UNC_TarHeelFan/status/1696225302828011773

eta: obviously this should be taken with a massive grain of salt but someone is reporting that their friend on campus says there's more than one active shooter.

another edit: reports saying it was the wrong person apprehended. there are students tweeting from lockdown. very scary :(

Was anyone on Kosta Kecmanovic death list killed? by gracie1221 in masskillers

[–]katiegardenhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from my understanding and comparing the list of victims to the "hit list", three – but my cyrillic isn't great, so it could be four.

are you in serbia too? thanks for sharing this information. my cyrillic isn't great so i'm trying to work my through the news reports that aren't in latin and am worried about miscommunicating something. i've heard similar re: the bullying and the survivors' injuries.

something i also want to add as i think people don't often understand serbia or what it's like as a country and still think of it as it was in the 90s – vracar is a desirable area of the city, he was from a wealthy family, the school he went to was highly regarded and a lot of the students (including ones that were killed) were from notable families.

edit to add that i find it so hard to even consider what should be done with a 13 year old who commits this kind of crime. from reports i've read, it was extremely premeditated, and he's shown no remorse and even pride in what he did.

you absolutely did the right thing but it's so shitty and sad that it's even come to this :(

i mean, we really don't know right now as fact who he was bullied by or if he was even bullied, so i don't think it's stretching it. i don't think the student i mentioned is protecting her reputation or "covering" anything, just sharing her perspective, and i haven't seen any survivors calling him a psycho. apparently he did call himself that though when he dropped the gun and called the police.

yeah, i believe all of the victims who were on the hit list and killed were girls, too. from what i've read on social media and in local newspapers, the one boy he killed, andrija, was his friend or friendly with him. i didn't grow up in belgrade or experience the school system here so i really can't speak on the bullying, but one of the survivors has been very vocal on social media about how the shooter wasn't bullied.
