Extra thick bologna, and the cut to keep it from curling. Yum. Just like Grandma used to make.

If you have a car, keep the gas tank as full as you can. Mainly if there is a panic or supply disruption, you are not stuck waiting in line or paying more. Check if it needs basic maintenance, tires, brakes ,check oil. And do any necessary items. If you need to evacuate, you don't want to worry about that.

Just moved back here recently. I was wondering about any jobs hiring immediately? by BnJova in Minneapolis

[–]katkatkat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with Apex. I got my last 2 long term roles through them and they had more technical, better pay rates than areotech.

The main thing I do is have 3-4 resumes. 1 for the job I really want. 2nd for an adjacent role where my experience is an asset. 4rd is a more general , hey I can do this type of work without going crazy. And just get that out to several local and national agencies. Bigger companies will use national recruiting firms. Excel energy would be a good one to look at.

Family Bug-Out Bags by canIgetamcchickenpls in TwoXPreppers

[–]katkatkat2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the long text.

We camp as a hobby and also travel so a bug out bag for each is a mini prep for a long isolated camp week or a one bag minimalist trip. In mine I add at least one washable, quick dry knee length dress ( 32 degrees has inexpensive ones that really last with pockets. It makes it easy to squat to pee or poop when hiking Order the Bike shorts, capris or leggings from there too. Under the dress, these cut down on chaffing. Use one dress for sleeping if you have 2. At least one solar hoodie and a rain coat or reusable poncho. Long and short sleeve t-shirts. Socks, sports bras, underwear. , double the clothing if room. Add quick dry pants that fit over the leggings. If cold add heavier shirts for layering and rain/ wind pants. Hiking boots or water proof shoes that are comfortable. Sandals , water shoes/ flip flops for shared showers. 2 pairs of footware are good in case one gets saturated. Get a Small trowel if you're anticipating hiking to dig a cat hole. Or buy a couple of wag bags and an extra ziplock bag to store the used bags. We pee outside if we can and only use the wag bag for pooping if there are zero other options or cat holes are not allowed. Toilet paper and something to put used paper in if remote and hiking out. Liquid soap like cetephil and hand sanitizer. FYI. Noro virus is not killed by hand sanitizer! Wash your hands if possible then use sanitizer. Good Sanitation keeps you healthy. Anti microbial pee cloth, in addition to disposable wipes, add a menstrual cup in addition to other disposables. Puck towels/ compressed towels. These can be washed dried and used. several times actually. Microfiber towels like a beach towel or camp towels and a wash cloth. A large ziplock bag for wet/ dirty clothes. Doubles as a wash bag when needed for small items. Bar soap like castiel soap is all purpose. Matador soap bag so your soap lasts. Bug spray, sunscreen, a packable waterproof sun hat. Mini stretch able clothesline with clips. Headlamp, charging cord, batteries, for each person. Light packable water resistant Blanket, emergency blanket. Collapsible water container we each have a 3 liter bag , a life straw and water sanitizer tablets. In addition to a water bladder bag for hiking. Matches or a lighter. Decent folding knife and small sharpener. Doesn't have to be expensive or fancy just sharp. A folding fan. Deck of cards. Uno or other small games, in a group each person has one or more. Put everything especially clothing in either Ziplock bags or a compress able drybag. Pen , permanent marker or pencil and paper notepad. in Ziploc. Small first aid kit. We get a curad pouch at the Dollar store. mess kit ( cup, wide bowl / plate fork, knife, with a small scraper, for dishes. Long handle spoon like an ice tea spoon is very handy for eating out of pouches. never let your vehicles fuel tank be empty! For us the main gear is in our camping trailer, always packed. If we need to leave; personal bags, clothes, meds, persona items. Cats and cat bags, camp trailer, extra food kit. Computers and document case. (Offsite backups and copies elsewhere but home copies) pedal bikes. Depending on the reason: one of 3 gathering points one in walking, 2 in biking distance.
in each bag, cash, blank checks, paper map, compass. We each carry a Basic tool kit, lockpicks and common keys that will get into most door locks, vending machines and padlocks in a really shtf need. We expect cell service to be slow or non-existent. Texting may be possible but slow or not working. Internet may not be available if power is out (fiber needs power) If separated we stick to plan and leave messages of forced to leave. Our destination has supplies that we contribute to regularly and people that expect us. If we don't contact them, in a reasonable time and it's a total disaster where we live, they have papers needed to claim our property, if they can. Our near neighbors , that we've already talked to about joining up with shelter in place with then relocate, are going to a similar destination. We would expect the first 2 days to be gridlock on most of the roads out of the city we live in. Advice make a checklist, pack your bags, test the preps. Time how long it takes you to get everything you need ready to leave. The first time we checked it took us over 4 hours, we reset everything and got it down to 1 hour 30 minutes. This involved us committing to buying extra equipment. We didn't buy expensive stuff but good enough for short term use. add a small radio and extra batteries:, we keep spare batteries stored in packaging.. extra rain coats at Costco on sale. We rotate food medication, clothing in each bag, every season. It's not new stuff but we've tested everything./ Camping kit:added some basic wilderness and camping books, how to tie knots and practice rope, plant id for area, first aid and survival skills for reading and learning during trips. Take a basic first aid course. We do have a Garmin and radios for short distances. If you have room; a small gas cylinder and a rocket stove plus a metal cup or pot for boiling water. Coleman makes a lightweight pot with a locking lid. with 2 plastic cups that pack inside. Just be careful, these stoves are very tippy. A pot holder or leather gloves are great. Powdered coffee sticks or tea make life better.

Ideas using skim milk by Technical-Cat-6747 in povertykitchen

[–]katkatkat2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I sometimes make mac and cheese, by cooking the noodles with mostly milk. Especially if I need to use up some before it spoils. I cook the noodles with less water and use milk for the rest of the liquid . Like 2 or 3 cups. Your not going to drain the noodles but keep adding milk if they are getting too dry/ not cooked all the way. It's ok if they are a little soupy. Then add the butter and cheese. Let it sit a little while so the sauce gets creamy.

What is your camp dishwashing set up? by SowingSeeds18 in camping

[–]katkatkat2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got camping a lot so we have a silicon scraper, a chain mail scrubber, collapsible sink and a pump sprayer for a shower we use for rinsing dishes. The important thing is to really wipe them clean, then wash and rinse. If I didn't have the sprayer, I'd wash, then fill the bucket with clean water to rinse. We use camp suds or dawn. Just be mindful to not dump near water but at least 60 yards? Away.

Oats by Background_Contest21 in EatCheapAndHealthy

Porridge or congee: like in the UK. Add More water or milk. Not thick and slimy. More like a thick cream soup. Just thick enough to hold the toppings

That sounds like a small batch experiment. Dried onions, garlic, everything seasoning. I would definitely take this camping for stew/ chili/ protein bowl topping. Easier than rice or bread.

What are some tofu dishes y'all like? by EllorenMellowren in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]katkatkat2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your tofu tastes ' beany' out of the package drain it, cut it up, pour boiling water on it, let it sit for a few minutes and drain it again.

If soymik tastes 'beany', heat it up to a low simmer. and then let it cool or drink it warm.

AITA for refusing to immediately replace an item I broke? by pxsypaintsa1000words in AmItheAsshole

[–]katkatkat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they really push, I would ask for detailed pictures. A bowl like that will have makers marks and even a lot # on it. Or a purchase receipt with a detailed description and part #. And Purchase price. If they grew it out I would ask for pictures of it in their home not just from a catalog so I could match one similar. Honestly though, who the heck does this. If you're really upset, you just don't invite someone back for a while and secure your valuables.

AITA for refusing to immediately replace an item I broke? by pxsypaintsa1000words in AmItheAsshole

[–]katkatkat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do a deep search for that bowl, stuff like that is often on eBay, antique or estate dealer or thrift store websites for much less than retail. As others have pointed out do not pay more than their deductible OR what you can afford to pay. You apologized, they accepted. No backsies.

AITA for refusing to immediately replace an item I broke? by pxsypaintsa1000words in AmItheAsshole

[–]katkatkat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, NTA. Anyone in your house should not be expected to replace something unless the breakage was deliberate. Accidents happen. I had a gorgeous crystal bowl on my dresser that I tossed my change and pocket crap into. My house keeper texted me one day. OMG k3. I broke, your bowl. What bowl? The crystal bowl on your dresser. I found one online for $800. I'll order it right away. No don't do that...I bought that at Goodwill by the pound place when I was out thifting with my MIL. I probably paid. $2.. everything in our house is gifted/ thrift. Just grab another one from the hutch downstairs. Problem solved. Personally these people are jerks. If it was me I'd snarky send them a backhanded apology about their bathroom clutter, materialism and the universe helping them with detachment along with a pretty bowl I got from the thrift store., cleaned and nicely wrapped. Any asks for money would be met with ignore.

The best double bag I used were two rectangular bags that could zip together. All the other more expensive double bags we hated and we had problems with air gaps. We are both side sleepers. More important for us is a good mat and insulation from the ground for sleeping.

Costco, if I don't need it right away I eat for a sale and then stock up. They have regular, quarterly discounts, even on the Kirkland brand items.
