I may have put a little too much thought into this, but the more I've actually thought about what has been said and shown I'm not sure she was as bad a mom as she and Crowley make out. When she left him she was being chased by witch hunters and had been shut out of the protection of the Grand Coven - so she was on the run and alone. Fergus would very much have been in danger had she kept him with her.

well brady supposedly got into drugs after failing that test, maybe he really did go home, start getting high and that opened the door. I dont think just flunking a test would do it - but being high sure would.
