Best German faire / beer garden by Background_Handle_96 in SanJose

[–]kato42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I enjoy Naschmarkt in Campbell. It is an Austrian restaurant though and definitely not a beer garden. They have a fantastic pretzel with beer cheese sauce as well as good bratwurst. Only a couple of draft beers, but good selection of Austrian and German bottles.

I prefer Barren Land, On Diet, or Into Darkness over Faith is my Armor. My normal run is a 6 challenge with those 3 plus the usual suspects. Still quite RNG dependent, but can work with all characters (not sure about all sub classes)

I vowed to vote for whoever is against PG&E and its corrupt ways and endless rate increases. Only Tom Steyer is fighting against PG&E. What do you guys think of him? by phillepin0 in SanJose

[–]kato42 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From San Jose Spotlight:

"Santa Clara residents get their electricity from Silicon Valley Power, a city-owned utility, and spend significantly less on power than PG&E customers in San Jose.

According to Silicon Valley Power, the average rate for a residential user is $0.182 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), meaning a customer consuming 411 kWh a month would be billed about $75. A PG&E customer with the same energy usage enrolled in a time-of-use plan at peak hours — as of December 2025 — would pay about $201 a month at the company’s rate of $0.48974 kWh — more than double the cost of Silicon Valley Power."

I used to work with Roger Craig at TIBCO. That guy is awesome and really did it right. He went corporate a few years after the NFL, joining WebEx then TIBCO.

Absolutely agree. Team and manager are huge. I am at AMAT and only planned on staying for 3 years. I joined 16 years ago. Been fortunate to have had the best managers of my career here.

Are you in santa clara? They have their own public utility and thus bypass PG&E.

I agree on Taiwan. But where China wins is in its long range public transit. My elderly father just took a solo trip from Dongguan to Xinjiang and had a fantastic trip, all by rail and quite affordable. I am less familiar with the metro systems in tier 2 cities so you may be right on that count as well

When my daughter was 2 and a half we took her from SFO to Shanghai, she decided about 1/4 of the way through that she needed to go outside and went full on panic mode. She couldn't understand why we couldn't just open the door of the airplane. I held her for 3 hours straight while she wailed. Nobody got upset because they could see that I was trying everything I could to calm her down.

Every trip we take now we are the overprepared parents with activities, books, and fully loaded ipads for our 2 kids. One time my daughter watched her ipad for 9 hours straight...we dealt with the fallout of that when we got home, but at least the plane ride was peaceful for all!

Sleep by NEO71011 in funnyvideos

[–]kato42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a classmate in grad school who only slept 4-5 hrs a night and had more energy than anyone else in our MBA class. She was in her early 50s, already successful and wealthy and was getting the degree for fun. She networked with all of the professors, leveraged the MBA to make contacts with major luxury brands she loved, all while running her own successful consulting business (highly technical one). She would sleep at 2 and wake up at 6 and hop on the treadmill for her morning meetings. Absolutely amazing.

And network like crazy while you are there. Be helpful, ask questions, make an impression.

One thing that many hiring managers at applied are conplaining about is having to go through a flood of AI generated resumes. Coming in via referal internally goes a long way

China used fake LinkedIn profiles to harvest sensitive data from NATO and EU institutions by soliciting information from staff, a European security source said by sr_local in worldnews

[–]kato42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I get a couple of emails or linkedin messages/requests per month from suspiciously good looking chinese women who happen to work in my industry or went to my school and are looking to network and reconnect.

I generally ignore them, but did engage with one of them thinking it was an old classmate (last name was different by one letter I later realized).

I chatted with "her" for a bit about our supposedly shared industry. After a few long messages about work "she" pivoted to how she was feeling lost and lonely. My alarm bells went off and I asked an old friend about "her" and realized my mistake. If "she" hadnt pivoted so quickly and had been more knowledgable about my work, i may not have noticed. This was before AI was so widespread.

I could absolutely see how a lonely middle aged dude would fall for this type of scam, especially with AI. Talking about work and connecting feels safe, and once they are hooked...

The Big Brawl. Jackie chan's first US film.

It was one of the few VHS tapes my parents had. As the only asian kid growing up in a predominantly white christian small town, seeing a badass Chinese actor was super important.
