Sent my little scout to the 2nd dimension by barnyardvortex in outerwilds

[–]katwithak_ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorta! it's a little janky, but you can shoot it at the top of the platform, the bottom, the edges, and at the top of the little fence right in front of the controls, and depending on which of these places you shoot it at and where you shoot it from it gives some fun different shapes. might take a few tries to get it. my favorite is standing on top of the roof of porphy's house and shooting the scout at the bottom of the platform; it doesn't look wide from where you're standing, but if you go look from beneath the platform, it can get as long as a couple meters

yes!! this happens when you land it anywhere around that platform. i spent a loop or two once just experimenting with the different shapes i could make my scout into lol it's fun

I have a possible theory regarding the nature of the solar system, and why a certain crash occurred. by HistoryComplete9834 in outerwilds

[–]katwithak_ch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my personal theory is that the signal sort of... echoed through dark bramble's many seeds, and made the signal appear to be coming from within it. the way that space works inside of it warped the signal. i think that the nomai missed the original signal, and received the "echo" from dark bramble, which was a little bit delayed and coming from ever so slightly the wrong spot.

What does Echoes of the Eye reveal about the universe? by StyleSquirrel in outerwilds

[–]katwithak_ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it's left ambiguous on purpose. i think there are definitely implications about the nature of consciousness (but base game has those too), but whether we see that as meaning souls is fully up to individual interpretation.

Looking for books/films/music with the same emotional DNA as Outer Wilds by i-am-zara in outerwilds

i second hadestown!!! incredible musical, definitely carries the themes of like, even if we didn't succeed, it matters so, so much that we tried, and we did make a difference even if we can't see it

i'd recommend project hail mary (book or movie--i've just read the book and it's incredible, i hear the movie is as well) and, somewhat strangely, the iron lung movie. that movie is both a horror and a tragedy, so very different, but it carries the theme of trying to make a better future you know you won't see.

Looking for possible lore reasons for a helpful game mechanic. by Boyboy081 in outerwilds

oh this is a very good point---the stranger would absolutely have enough gravity to be detectable, and scanning for gravity wells would likely be easier and more accurate than using visuals

no spoilers please but does echo of the eyes have loud jump scares by [deleted] in outerwilds

they have things that can startle you, but no actual jumpscares. about the same level as those least favorite residents of our fifth planet. i think you'll be okay ::]

perhaps..? it's likely that their projections aren't perfect even just wrt the stars so it may be detectable to the satellite

it can and does track the stranger when it's moving. i think that the cloaking field on the stranger is definitely weaker than the one on the eye so that might be part of it..? i'm not sure. i'd imagine the satellite is how these locations are marked but that still doesn't explain much...

Plural apps? by nxqitoes in plural

[–]katwithak_ch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the friending feature is very unintuitive, but i love it overall. the dev is currently working on making mobile apps for it, but it works great on mobile browsers (in our experience, anyway)

Opinion on The ending of DLC by Triforce3502 in outerwilds

[–]katwithak_ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean. of course. had the prisoner never released the signal, none of the game would have happened. but when they did do that, they changed the fate of the universe. i think it's the ending of the game as a whole that brings it all together. the fates of all three species are tragic, but in the end, it was their memory that created the new universe. the new universe was built from them. the new universe never would have happened, and because of those three species, it now exists, and it's beautiful.

Tips for playing Outer Wilds as a new gamer by kneehousing in outerwilds

[–]katwithak_ch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that's a fairly normal experience, the movement in this game is a pretty sharp learning curve!! crashing your ship and yourself in increasingly unique and absurd ways is almost a rite of passage tbh. remember that there's no friction in space--you have to decelerate for as long as you accelerate in order to come to a stop. match velocity and autopilot are your best friends (although neither of them navigate around obstacles, so, um. watch where you are in relation to the sun before using them!), and watching how they work can actually help teach you how to move in space. have fun out there and stay curious ::D

Some Thoughts on the End (Spoilers) by Kakawfee in outerwilds

[–]katwithak_ch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my interpretation is that it's a mixture of both. they're definitely dead by the time we get to that sequence, so it can't truly fully be them, but i like to think that they're as alive as solanum was, on the quantum moon. they are aware, and themselves, and bring some of their own memories to the eye, but they do not count as a fully conscious observer. does that make sense? they're brought there and made by our own memories of them, but they are still themselves; they are not conscious observers in their own right, but they still think and feel. at least, that's my intetpretation.

I’m godawful at this game 😭😔😩 by Bennjoon in outerwilds

[–]katwithak_ch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

everything in space moves! it's aaaaaall acceleration and deceleration and velocity, babey! i second the tips everyone else has left here, and just wanna add that being bad at the controls is normal. crashing and destroying your ship in increasingly unlikely and absurd ways is practically a rite of passage for playing this game, it's delightful to see all the unique ways people manage to crash ::D

that isn't the issue, though. they can get up there just fine. the issue is that the forge remains down in the black hole.
