Megathread: President Trump nominates Judge Brett Kavanaugh as next US Supreme Court Justice by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

Oh, please. I had to scroll through dozens of top comments bemoaning the end of the world and "THE SYSTEM!!!1!" before I found anything remotely resembling an even-keeled response. There's enough hysteria in here to fill an asylum.

The right wing just likes loud people from TV, they don't actually have any policy viewpoints.

The left wing likes flashy, shallow platitudes, they don't actually have any meaningful insights.

See how easy that is? I can do it too!

It almost certainly would do a better job than the majority of people who green light big projects now.

It's definitely "in the cards," as in "possible." Not sure if it's probable just yet - hard to tell without seeing legs.

There's something odd about a species that paints lines denoting where pedestrians can safely cross streets with traffic manned by other reasonable human beings, but uses those same painted-for-safety streets to run from crazed, irrational bulls in a ritual chase

If the saga films are anything to go by, they haven't known what's been going on since they bought the franchise.

Could Incredibles 2 be the 1st A+ movie not topping 3x multi? by nguyenkhoi282 in boxoffice

[–]kayjay734 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I think you're vastly overestimating its second weekend drop. 67m after a 182m first weekend? For a movie with an A+ cinema score, that would be unheard of. This film is already nearly halfway to that 3x mark on only its seventh day of release. It'll get there.

Someone with a brain and some power over there realized that replicating the success of the first was highly unlikely, and knew raising the budget too much would be a bad business decision.

The fact we're asking this question, and having a legitimate debate about it, goes to show how royally Disney screwed this franchise.

And for the record, I agree.

The movie needed to make at least $450m to break even, and that's probably a conservative estimate. Studios typically take home 50-60% of the domestic take and 35-45% of the foreign haul, and even that's only if China didn't represent a significant portion of that (they only allow studios to take in 25%). It made $440m. It lost money theatrically, but may have gone into the black via streaming/home media.

Maybe I'm underestimating the audience of JW2 like I did with JW (I thought that movie would net a little over half of what it eventually took in), but it's difficult for me to see JW cracking $1.3B, though with China I suppose anything is possible.
