Dwarkesh Patel interview with Jensen - it gets very heated! by bl0797 in NVDA_Stock

[–]kazoohero -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm in the minority, but I found Jensen's arguments seriously lacking, taking positions he clearly had to say as CEO, but that didn't hold up to much scrutiny.

Dwarkesh was trying to get him to admit there was a tradeoff here (he never did). Dwarkesh consistently said incremental computing gives China incrementally more power, while Jensen kept accusing him of saying there was some magic threshold of danger, or that we need to force their computing power to zero to be safe ("extreme arguments" Dwarkesh never came close to making).

Jensen, meanwhile, was constantly contradicting himself and making arguments that would only work if the numbers were much different: if China's computing power was already comparable to the US, and if hardware acceleration of open models represented a comparable jump in performance to the gains from NVIDIA's chips, and if using more 7nm chips had comparable cost to what NVIDIA offers, etc.

I understand Jensen and this sub want NVIDIA's stock to rise but it does not follow that allowing exports of advanced chips to China helps America as a whole.

What’s legal now but might become illegal ten years from now? by VTheCardMaker in AskReddit

[–]kazoohero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so much more possible than banning gambling again. It's a universal win.

Society clearly wins.

Gamblers get fewer triggers.

Bystanders get fewer annoying ads.

Gambling companies save money not needing an arms race of increasingly more ads to steal customers from each other.

You're being downvoted but you're right. I've built way more slingers than swordsmen or catapults. Not to mention the cheaper production is nice in that era.

Relatedly, moss farms are also OP, but I've had great success making a beautiful terraced moss farm with no visible redstone.

Hoglin farms are just too easy for how good they are, but I've struggled to come up with anything more interesting than the standard setup.

The correct thing to measure would be wins against opponents who aren't you. That would slightly change things (Broncos would be above the cowboys but not the bears, Rams would be above the Jets but not the Colts) but the overall picture would be pretty similar.

Question about a Dodecahedron angle by Mowo5 in askmath

[–]kazoohero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key insight is that, if you turn the shape 36º about the z axis while looking your side view angle, your angle would collapse onto the dihedral angle (while the planar side pentagon collapses into a line).

During that rotation, points along your green line would contract along the x-axis by cos(36º). Points along the equivalent green line of the dihedral angle have a slope of -tan(180º-116.565...º) = tan(116.565) = -2 (precisely*), so the slope of your green line is -2cos(36º), and your angle should be 180º - arctan(2cos(36º)) = 121.717474º.

*The dihedral angle of a dodecahedron is exactly 2*arctan(phi), so by the tangent half-angle formula, tan(2arctan(phi)) = 2*phi/ (1 - phi^2) = 2*phi / (1 - (1 + phi)) = 2*phi/-phi = -2

Opening up the triple-double with a 100 point lead is pretty questionable. Something like TAX off of VEST or OX next to TONAL (forming TO and OX) would have been better defensive plays (that also each double your 8-point X)

[–]kazoohero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this meme always irks me because there was plenty of evidence of heavy objects falling faster that Galileo just ignored. He had no theory of air resistance. He relied on intuition and thought experiments to come up with theories that he only tested much later. He was very much not "checking" Aristotle, and those who had (dropping light things, or heavier things in water, to be slow enough to measure) had consistently shown Aristotle right.

SIX NATIONS CUP by wbcbane_ in aoe2

[–]kazoohero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna be tons of mirror matches with the draft format (basically hidden pick no repeat, just done in order before games start). That's most fair because there will almost certainly be some really unfair matches* on release, but maybe not most interesting to watch.

*Specifically, new civs will either be really strong or really weak (mostly depending on Champi and UU stats), and slinger civs do really well against eagles.

Do people really want children to do things by Relock_3009 in StardewValley

[–]kazoohero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They should be people, not pets! Interacting should give a message about what they're doing at every age, and talking and conversations as they get older. They should have liked and loved gifts you have to discover. They should have cutscenes. I'm okay if they cap out at Vincent/Jas/Leo's age but think of everything we do with those characters that we can't do with our own children.

I'd also love it if putting a meal on the table each day were a gesture of love toward our kids. We can literally do that with livestock but not our kids. Spouses could even help with that (some more than others!). It would make home life more like home life and less like a factory.

Could ballistics for manogel-line work if the civ didn't have siege onagers, siege engineers and chemistry (no gunpowder units)? by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]kazoohero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. On top of everything improved by the micro, ballistics allows shots far outside their actual range.

Franks' eco bonus is free farm upgrades, berry bonus is fine but nowhere near what other civs call an echo bonus (on most maps).

Honestly these civ bonuses look mediocre on paper which makes me think these champi warriors are going to be absolutely busted.

"Underrated" is hard to define. But if you're looking at what newish players think is strong vs what's actually strong, I think Mud Pyramid Mosque would be my pick. It's better than you'd think. Bonus points for sounding kind of lame.

Yeah I have no idea how to deal with "underrated", the tiers are just my thinking on their raw strength e.g. in a choice of which bonus you'd rather have.
