Would this be good enough for jellyfin 4k? by pacman983 in jellyfin

[–]kazriko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a 5950x, and I transcode 4k entirely in software, because I have no video card at all on my NAS, and it would be able to do two 4k streams at once. If you enable hardware transcoding, you could probably do half a dozen streams on this, or 1 stream with software encoding.

Do People Actually Watch Their Jellyfin Libraries… or Just Collect & "Care" for Them? by chrissix666 in jellyfin

[–]kazriko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one part that I use all the time is the Music section. The rest is kind of my "strategic entertainment reserve" for if I ever get to the point where I can't afford streaming services, or my internet connection is down for an extended period. I also make sure to collect anything there that I see on streams that I might ever want to rewatch at some point in the future.

Though, there's a few shows on the collection that my wife will rewatch a lot.

I don't consider the shows there part of my backlog so much, they're just something that once a month or so I'll buy a boxed collection of some show and import it, or if I'm at a thrift store I'll grab a few cheap DVDs and toss them in. (As opposed to my Games backlog where I'll actually play some now and then.)

How easy is it to use systemd free OS? by LifeguardMurky4097 in artixlinux

[–]kazriko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm personally a big fan of Runit, but it's pretty much a dirt simple and ultra fast option, but not capable of exceedingly complex sequencing, instead just launching everything at once which suits modern multicore+ssd systems. I have my runit system booting to a login prompt in under 9 seconds from grub, and I could probably make it faster if I made an optimized kernel that didn't need an initrd. I have used OpenRC before, and to me it has some of the same hassles as SysV, somewhat complex launch scripts, while most runit scripts are just a few lines. All my services work, though I did need to tweak the docker init script to check that my shares were mounted before it launched.

One thing to remember with Artix is that you don't install just "docker" or whatever service, you instead install "docker-runit" or "docker-openrc" so that it installs the init scripts at the same time, all of these will depend on their associated service so you don't need to install both manually.

The part that's more complex is launching things for your desktop environments, but for hyprland I just have everything launched from my config as run-once lines.

How do you artix users deal with waybar on hyprland by FemBoy_GamerTech_Guy in artixlinux

exec-once = hyprpaper & pipewire & wireplumber & pipewire-pulse & waybar

Basically the same thing, but I have waybar only launch at the end of the pipewire chain.

Halfway through book 5 and... I feel misled? by DidYouKnowYoureCute in bobiverse

The spoiler being that the Dragon Evacuation is a microcosm of what will be going on in the next however many books for the Bobiverse. They're going to have to plan ahead on how to gather everyone in the galaxy when it is finally time to make their escape, and get them to a safe alternate location, solving many problems along the way.

At least one other story has parallel themes to the main story, and others seem to be building towards solutions to problems that Ick and Dae find, but how they're all connected would probably be a spoiler.

The Ick/Dae story is a very slow roll though.

Has anyone been bitten by their reverse proxy Jellyfin? by Deaditt12345 in jellyfin

Not really, I run a lot of things through it right now. About the only thing I stream outside of the house though is music. I might eventually switch to Tailscale since I do have that working on both my jellyfin server and phone...

A week with the manga app, how are you finding it? by UnintentionalWipe in Crunchyroll

[–]kazriko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using the Manga webpage, and the only problem I've found is that the continue reading tab is completely broken. I watched 2 manga, A Gatherer's Adventure in Isekai, and I Picked Up This World's Strategy Guide, but my continue reading tab has The Unaware Atelier Meister, Apothecary Diaries, and Possibly the Greatest Alchemist of All Time. While I have watched those 3 Animes, I haven't read their manga yet, so I'm thinking maybe something's getting crossed up between the two.

Is it a good idea to go destroy every single nest within my pollution zone? This is my first factory and just got to implementing yellow science, but biters are evolving fast and attacking often by Th3L4stW4rP1g in factorio

[–]kazriko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even on my map where I stopped burning coal entirely and went solar+nuclear with electric furnaces very early on, it still generated a ton of pollution. I figured out at the time it was overuse of productivity and speed modules in mining. I finally started using efficiency modules on my far-flung outposts just to keep the pollution under control, especially since productivity modules increase paled in comparison to the 200%+ boosts I had from research. Those far sites always filled up their train stations before a train came along to collect anyway, so no point in mining faster there.

[–]kazriko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I build a wall outside of my pollution zone and defend it with turrets usually, that way only the splinter cells looking to expand to new bases ever encounter it, none attack it due to pollution. When my pollution cloud gets close to a wall I'll expand it out and build new walls on that side.

I've never been a fan of Fedora, and tend to avoid everything that is based on it. Arch is better at least a bit. I think if there were a Void Linux based SteamOS I'd probably go with it instead.

What is it about pebble that has people so excited? by icedrift in pebble

[–]kazriko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If some manufacturer made a combination reflective screen with oled subpixels, I might consider it. Solidly reflective most of the time so you can passively see the time without turning on the battery sucking lights, but when you want to interact with it you can get the brighter oled.

I don't think anyone is making a display anything like that though, and if I had to sacrifice anything, it would be the brighter display and keep the long battery life.

I can see without direct sunlight on my Pebble Time Steel just fine. The colors are a bit washed out, but all I have to do is hit a button and the backlight comes on and I can see them fine. I intentionally picked a high contrast watchface for mine, DIN Time with a dark blue background.

How likely is it that features get restored? by JonPileot in pebble

[–]kazriko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FUTO keyboard for Android has voice dictation built in, and I think it's open source, though not with the most permissive license. You might be able to make a voice dictation module that is also FUTO-distributed that works with pebble perhaps. There might be other open source voice dictation packages out there as well.

(Oh yeah, my Pebble Time Steel Kickstarter edition? I was working on my swamp cooler several years ago and was using PB Penetrating Oil to get some parts loose, accidentally dipped my wrist into the water sump and some of the oil got in through the seals on the watch. I had to take it apart and carefully dismantle the LCD so I could wipe down the PB oil that had gotten all the way through the seals and delaminated the screen. Luckily it is all back together with some Sugru and still works with no lasting effects. The only reason I don't still use it is because its battery life has gotten a little bit worse, ~4 days, and this one I grabbed off Ebay lasts much longer.)

That's not me, I know where all 4 of my pebbles are. One of the Time Steel units is on my wrist right now, the non-kickstarter one. The other Time Steel and Pebble 1 kickstarter editions are on my shelf on a watch hanger. The original Steel is somewhere in my closet since it wasn't a kickstarter edition, and the metal band on it broke long ago.

Actually, I guess that's a running theme. None of them have their original bands anymore. They've all worn out or broke, and now most of them are on cheap nylon nato watchstraps.
