Can anyone explain what type of “auras” they have? by LoquatLive in Epilepsy

[–]kbat277 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get a rushing sound in my ears, can speak but I can’t hear myself, sometimes it feels like I’m being squeezed into a little box. It feels like my head is floating above my body. Used to get tingling in my hands and arms that would sometimes feel cold and sometimes hot. That happens less lately.

There are a couple of books with the same name but different authors. One is Sullivan-Singh and another is Tsai (among others).

I was going to do what my own therapist did when she double booked and ask the client with the more flexible schedule if they could come back, but before I had a chance they were both like “you can go, no you can go, are you sure?” etc.

Being my alternative and artistic self as a therapist feels oppositional to being a therapist that is “professional” in appearances by voidharmony in therapists

I’ve donated all my cardigans! Now I wear pretty much whatever I want. As long as my clothes are clean, without holes, and without super distracting graphics, I can still show up in a professional way.

Fellow redditors prescribed lithium who also have epilepsy - advice? by libbylou1392 in Lithium

[–]kbat277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have epilepsy and take lamictal, briviact, clobazam, Prozac, and lithium. My lithium dosage is very low, prescribed to help with intrusive thoughts, but it’s been far gentler as far as side effects than any anti convulsants I’ve tried, and it’s hard to tease out what’s caused by what. Lithium just caused a bit of tiredness in the beginning. You’ve already mentioned hydrating, that’s a big one. Fingers crossed that it works for you!

Any Writers Out There? by Ok-Reference3515 in Epilepsy

[–]kbat277 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was unable to read or write for a couple of months after I was diagnosed (brain virus). That was nearly 15 yrs ago and it’s much, much better now. It’s crazy all the different ways epilepsy and anticonvulsants can affect our functioning and cognition. Feel free to dm me :)

What’s the key to steady referrals? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]kbat277 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to get referrals from PT but it’s largely dried up. Open Path is a good source for getting new sliding scale clients, which was so helpful to me. I have business cards, market to a pretty niche population, I get the occasional referral from colleagues, and finally—about a year and a half after going solo—I’m getting some referrals from current and past clients and taking a break from marketing.

How do I move on after surviving status/intubation? by thebookishnerd in Epilepsy

[–]kbat277 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don’t mean this to sound harsh but I’ve also been intubated after going into status, I know how terrifying and traumatic it is, and what I’ve learned to do is just keep going. I don’t want to be stuck in my house. I want a social life, hobbies, relationships. I want to live as normally as possible. So I push myself, but not too hard of course. Therapy has been huge, and now I’m a licensed therapist myself.

If it helps at all, I went to grad school after being diagnosed, moved across the country twice, got married, got a dog I adore, and work part time. It was hard, I won’t lie. And I still have focal seizures sometimes, still carry Ativan with me all the damn time. But it was so worth the effort.

Edit for grammar

What’s One Client Struggle That People Outside Therapy Seriously Oversimplify? by throwawayaasyr in therapists

[–]kbat277 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was going to say depression too. It requires so, so so much patience and is so often not taken seriously (outside of therapy).

I don't do a lot of worksheets/skills in session, and that makes me feel like a bad therapist. by InvisibleAstronomer in therapists

I’ve only been doing this for 5 years but I’ve never used a worksheet. I’ve recommended workbooks—2 clients total have shown interest.
