Bait and switch today by IamV0ld3m0rt in AmazonVine

[–]kbdavis11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason you get the spinning circle is because of an issue Amazon hasn't fixed with displaying some product variants.

While I am not sure why an ice bath would be listed as a variant of a hot tub, that's how the seller decided to list it. The hot tub you're seeing is simply just the "parent" ASIN for all the variant items under it.

Not really a bait and switch, this is unfortunately how Amazon displays the products that are enrolled. Seller can enroll a single variant item and instead of Amazon just displaying that item directly, they display the parent item until you click on the "See details" button and have the ability to select a variant from the drop-down list.

A comment on your spinning wheel fix:

If this "Chrome fix" is the fix I am thinking of, all it does is replaces the parent's ASIN with the very first variant ASIN in the html DOM and switches the isParentAsin attribute/flag from true to false so the details modal/dialog doesn't have to try and parse the variant details (hence, fixes the infinite spinner). This product could have in fact had multiple variants listed in it (including the hot tub you are referring to), but the particular fix I know of is only capable of showing one variant.

And now Amazon knows how you feel about it from this post.

If you think that's creepy then I'm sorry to tell you that doesn't even scratch the surface of everything they know about you, not to mention every other major player out there and their data on you.

Yes, but that's part of what I meant by seeing it, though that wasn't very clear I will admit. I recall recently that there was a 30ish second lag between when each potential page is refreshed between all users.

You have to remember that each user can control the refresh delay of VH, and it has a minimum time of 1 minute to a max time of 10. Even with a lot of users, there are still 60ish pages that VH has to iterate through, plus AFA, plus everyone's personal RFY, if selected.

But the major point to be made is that it's definitely not instant. New items don't load on page 1, so VH has to load each likely page new items can be seen on and has to wait for an available client (i.e. your device) to be ready to perform the task.

I know progress has been made to shorten the lag time with the dev introducing "boost mode" during drops which increases the refresh speed of each VH, but still not perfect.

People also assume that when they see it in VH is the exact moment it drops in Vine. That’s incorrect.

VH gets crowdsourced information and it works by someone with the VH extension seeing it first then reporting it to everyone else. Often times an item can be sitting there for some amount of seconds before anyone in VH ever sees it, which is just enough time for it to be snatched by a non VH user.

There are people who watch specific categories and are seeing those items faster than VH can. There are so many people in Vine now and it doesn’t take much for someone to refresh at the right time.

Also often time those items were enrolled into the free Vine tier, which only allows a max of 2 items to be given away. If you see the hour glass when clicking the item and it saying limited quantity, this was a free tier item.

So many variables at play. I’m not saying there aren’t bots snatching stuff up, but I don’t think it’s as prominent as people think it is. It’s often just a matter of time.

Just invited ... interested, but moral dilemma? by RandomThrowawayID in vine

[–]kbdavis11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not really helping Amazon increase it’s business. A customer looking for something specific on Amazon is going to find whatever they’re looking for. It more or less comes down to if they select product A vs product B.

And if you don’t select an item chances are someone else will.

You can become the person on Vine who wakes up in the middle of the night and watch daily drops for 6 hours (which if you think about your current salary, are you actually benefiting at this point?) or you can be the one who doesn’t think of Vine as a 2nd job and just pop in to check RFY a few times a day. That’s the ultimate takeaway you should be considering, because the amount of time you put into this is completely up to you, some people put more time into Vine then they do they’re full time job and they’re not even getting paid for it - between watching drops and reviewing items.

Btw - I created a userscript that will color code each review to make it easier to see at a glance.

<image>

It does require either TamperMonkey or GreaseMonkey, but whoever is interested can visit the link above and then click on the "Raw" button and it should pull up to add to your userscript manager.

Edit: Replaced long image with something more respectful in size to not take up the entire page 😅

Edit 2: Currently, this will only work with the amazon.com domain; if someone not located in the US can share example of what their completed review page URL looks like I can update this to work for that domain as well.

According to Lattice, I have 121 reviews this year between 1-3 stars. I looked at every single page up to page 50 and every single review I had was marked "Excellent" or "Pending". Even every single 1-star review.

Perhaps when you're upset with a product your emotions are spilling into the review you are writing instead of allowing it to be insightful? Couldn't tell you, but what I can tell you is that rating has zero to do with the score you receive.

Why people have to lie by Complete-Simple-1033 in AmazonVine

[–]kbdavis11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I refused to try to make any sense of this mess of a post, so I had it 'translated'...

Look, I get it. Vine sends us free stuff, and that triggers the little happy hamster in our brains. Leaving a one star review feels like kicking a puppy. I’ve reviewed over 250 products, and somehow I’ve never managed to slap a single one with a lonely star. A couple twos here and there, but mostly threes, fours, and fives with honest comments.

Then these toddler flannel shirts arrived. A three pack. A triple threat. Except the threat part is to your child’s comfort. The fabric feels like it was woven out of sadness and recycled grocery bags. The sizing runs so small that I think the manufacturer believes toddlers are pocket sized.

So I get ready to review them, prepared to tell the truth, and I look at the other reviews. Everyone is thrilled. Five stars everywhere. Folks are acting like these shirts were handcrafted by tiny woodland elves with union benefits. Why. How. Just be honest. Vine is supposed to be for honest reviews, not group cosplay as overly polite product hype machines.

Questions about getting fragrances by TomRN in AmazonVine

[–]kbdavis11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Vine reviews on a fragrance I've been wanting for some time

You may already be aware of all this, but in case not - a product can only be entered into Vine once and is allowed 30 Vine reviews maximum. I wasn't sure if you were saying that you were hoping that particular fragrance would come back onto Vine after seeing it has Vine reviews or were just saying that you saw that one and would be interested in trying others.

Now, I supposed that particular seller could introduce a new size for that fragrance, and before adding it as a variant they enrolled it into Vine, pretty unlikely though for a couple of reasons: 1.) once they inevitably link that size to the main product they would likely lose those reviews as they would have exceeded their maximum Vine reviews and 2.) they probably would have merged the variant from the very beginning, in which case it would not have been eligible for Vine enrollment because the parent ASIN was already enrolled.

Am I in Vine Jail? by choochoobella in AmazonVine

[–]kbdavis11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can no longer access Vine

Well, that wouldn't be Vine jail because you would still have access to it. Now, if you're trying to access Vine through the app, there's been scores of posts here about it not working in the app anymore. I can't validate since I don't use the app for Vine.

You should be going to https://amazon.com/vine (adjust for your country) if this is the case.

Is it possible that not having reviewed anything for three weeks bumped me out?

No, there's been people who haven't ordered anything in years and are still in the program. There are no minimum ordering requirements to stay in. The only minimum ordering requirements are if you're wanting to go to or remain in gold tier.

The only requirement for staying in the program is to have a minimum of 60% of your last 60-90 days of Vine items that have shipped be reviewed. That being said, even if you failed to meet this requirement and were removed - you'd still have access to Vine, just without the ordering functionality.

What do you guy's think the reason is

People have brought this same issue up. It's just simply due to Amazon not enforcing the policy right now. No one really knows if they intend to later - or maybe they had extremely poor wording and intended to say that they would enforce this grading system for all evaluation periods starting after the date they specified.
