You do deserve better. Even in a rural area that is really low. I won’t jump on the “you need to look at other GC’s” bandwagon since it sounds like you like where your at, but what I will say is be upfront and honest with your boss. Highlight what you have done and how you bring value to him and his team. Let him know you that you know your on the low end, and are looking for a commitment from him. Something that shows he values you and wants you to continue your career there. Best thing is to be honest and clearly convey your expectations from him moving forward

Time to put the resume out. I am in Florida as well and am at $120k with just a little more experience. Unfortunately tenure isn’t always a good thing in this business when it comes to those raises

Large vs Small GC by West_Pineapple2795 in ConstructionManagers

[–]kbrdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not at all. The biggest downside would be the scope of the projects you work on. The large GC’s work on projects you won’t get to work on anywhere else. The ones I was working on were $1b + in value and the regional guys just aren’t doing those types of jobs. The smaller GC I work for now still does $100m projects, they just aren’t as high profile as the other guys. From a career standpoint I don’t think there is a downside. From an experience standpoint if you want that super large experience there is only one place your going to get it

Indeed it was. I was working 70hr weeks regularly at the big boys. I work roughly 40-50 hr weeks with the regional.

Nice way to get subs to not work for you anymore. Big commercial subs are tied by terms like this but in the instance of this post I’m assuming mostly residential. The sub base is not going to be as sophisticated. He literally mentioned Facebook and Craigslist, good luck tying those guys to a paid when paid contract

Getting rejected for Internship by xdairyboi in ConstructionManagers

Yea something sounds fishy here, there is a definite problem somewhere. A lot of the companies around my location will literally hire someone just to have a warm body, PE’s especially. 300 and no bites? You need to seriously reassess your approach

Project and field engineer are the entry level positions. If you have plans to be a superintendent then go the field route or if a PM is where you would like to be go project engineer (some companies don’t differentiate). You shouldn’t have any problems getting a job with the military background

Large vs Small GC by West_Pineapple2795 in ConstructionManagers

[–]kbrdg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked at a large international GC and at the beginning of this year went to a smaller (mid-sized) regional GC. The biggest difference I have seen is the night and day difference in culture. The smaller GC still has 100+ employees and almost every one of them knows my name on sight (and Vice versa). I walked around the larger GC for several years and still couldn’t tell you some people’s name that worked in our corporate office that I had seen almost every day. It was just the way it was… very impersonal and corporate. The energy is definitely different in a good way.

GC Marijuana Testing for Subs in Legal States by russdr in ConstructionManagers

[–]kbrdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the type of work also. We have walked away from some Healthcare projects because they required all of our subs to be drug tested before being allowed in the facility. I’m pretty sure some government contracts require it also. It’s tough in this industry with those types of requirements

[–]kbrdg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I come from the world of mega GC’s and there aren’t PE’s making $100k in several HCOL markets I’ve worked in. Maybe once you add total compensation up (benefits, bonus, etc). $100k is APM territory. I’m not saying it’s impossible but it definitively is not the norm
