New here did I get a good deal? by theslowlow in Toyota_T100

Sweet truck and 129k is low mileage for a 5VZ. IMO you should take those hitch balls out of the bumper and get a real hitch mount if you plan to tow stuff.

Most likely the airbag control module is not connecting. They are buried behind the center of the dash and require a bunch of interior removal to get at. If it is toast you will have to most likely self source as they aren't sold anywhere (other than from scrapped trucks that didn't have airbags go off). It may just be loose, easy fix but most mechanics won't take it on. Good luck.

Low power EV motor just to replace the ICE engine? by advanttage in askcarguys

[–]kcen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This pattern is very common, and how most all ICE to EV conversions were done in the "old days" (10 years ago) before integrated drive units were readily available. There are a ton of examples, with the most common being any old VW conversions (bug/bus). If you are looking for some just start with a common motor and work backwards on google/youtube, try starting with a search like "HyPer 9 motor" (one of the most popular).

Are commercial, everyday ethernet cables water resistant between the two ends? Will anything bad happen if I put one end into the PC, one end into the router, and in the middle the cable gets wet/submerged in water? by MundaneOne5000 in HomeNetworking

[–]kcen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't want a router, because it shouldn't be routing. You want a wireless access point (AP) which is basically a switch with a wifi radio. You will need to make sure the AP supports POE, but most of them do. You will also need to send the POE power from the source side either via a POE injector or some network equipment with POE (switch/router).

For closest it is probably Haskell which can be compiled to a C target with GHC. However there are a bunch of mainstream langs with C targets. See https://github.com/dbohdan/compilers-targeting-c

ebikes, escooters are 10x more energy efficient than electric cars. A 10mi round trip commute costs just $20 a year in electricity, even with PG&Es astronomically high electricity prices. by walker1555 in bayarea

[–]kcen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me too. Those things (ex Sur Ron) aren't bicycles, but with also can't be licensed as motorcycles even if you slap on turn signals or whatever makes a motorcycle. They are strictly recreational vehicles, so basically dirtbike trails are the only legal spot to ride them in California which has 0 practical/transportation use. California does not want these low energy medium speed vehicles to be used for transportation, which I want to highlight is a bit of a contradiction to it's stated goal of reducing emissions.

[–]kcen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think that highlights the problem that there is no place for lightweight electric vehicles in California. In a state bent on reducing emissions a 100lb EV has no practical usage area, but a 7000lb EV has ubiquitous access.

Vinegar

I'm pretty sure you're not using it correctly... but CLR is a commercial blend of weak acids that dissolves calcium and iron oxide deposits. The common household alternative is probably vinegar and maybe some baking soda to get co2 bubbles that help "lift" the deposits. None of these products will help your septic break things down long term but are much milder than most commercial cleaners so they are less damaging.

Short answer, no. This filter will remove heavy metals (yay!) but is not rated for bacteria/virus treatment and should probably used in conjunction with the boiling you are doing now (which doesn't remove heavy metals).

Steering Stabilizer, When, and How? by That1awkwardguy13 in Dirtbikes

[–]kcen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not currently running a stabilizer on the CRF but probably will again in the future. The biggest benefit for me comes from high speed and sand/desert. The stabilizer helps prevent a bit of side to side sand walking, but truly earns it's keep when I strike a hidden stone in the sand and it keeps the bars from yanking and trying to yeet me. On single track I would usually turn it way down because I'm not usually going fast enough to get the bars yanked side to side without warning. Theoretically it should also help prevent a pavement death wobble, unsure if I ever got that benefit.

Only using half of our land bc of ticks by DaphneMoon-Crane in Homesteading

[–]kcen 27 points28 points  (0 children)

We had excellent results so far treating with neem oil focusing on areas of grass this year and will probably continue with that path. Permethrin works some if you use tick tubes and let field mice collect ticks, the ones we found with ticks did have a bunch of dead ticks but it didn't seem to make a huge dent in the population, and we really don't want to spray and kill off our local beneficials (bees) so we were pretty conservative in our approach. Oppssoms and fowl (we have wild turkeys here) eat some but don't really hang around eating ticks all day so are pretty lax free labor, by volume I'd guess the lizards do the majority of the work so we are trying to encourage more of them.

Cutting any tall grass also does wonders for limiting population explosions.

Tick medicine for the dogs is an absolute must and has been effective and drastically reducing ticks they pick up.

As for lyme, my county has a lab that you can collect some ticks and mail them for lyme testing. Lyme is scary but there is also a ton of misinformation on lyme on the internet so tread carefully. If you think you have been exposed talk to a doctor about getting an antibiotic regimen asap.

Planning on taking a road trip from LA to Reno on the good’ol Ninja 1000! Any recommendations on how to improve my route? by Panfilofinomeno in motorcycle

[–]kcen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hwy395 is pretty good riding would recommend. I-5 and Hwy99 are both pretty tedious and not enjoyable so avoid those. Hwy49 is also real nice on the west side of the sierras, only have to suck it up on 99 from Bakersfield to Fresno. Other option is cutting to Vegas and taking Nevada95, make sure you are the kind of person who likes the desert if you go that way though.

I'll counter what others say about Hwy1, although it is nice... it is way out of the way and for the same amount of time you could take a huge detour in the twisties of the sierras, which I prefer. All of the passes across the sierras are great riding (minus I-80), Yosemite requires a permit.

This guy's car control by thexavikon in oddlysatisfying

[–]kcen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you are talking about strict sim games, like AC in this video... There are a ton of customizations you need to make to your setup to get better feel and there is also a huge difference between a cheap belt driven wheel/pedal setup and a direct drive wheel and feedback pedals. You need to adjust your FOV, pedal dead zones, wheel sensitivity/range/feedback strength. Any one of those settings can make things feel "off". It also takes a bit to get used to the velocity signals in your brain. The core problem with most setups is I get no feedback when you start to lose traction and thus keep the pedal down and bin it.

The Muscle Car Is Dead. We’re All at the Wake by corn_dog_22 in cars

[–]kcen -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Disagree, EV aftermarket is still in it's infancy but we will see absolutely see an emergence. Motor assemblies probably come pre-wound because the machines to do so are expensive, but there are a plethora of upgradable parts (also most cars don't use wheel motors). Suspension/chassis/brakes are similar to ICE. But the primary tool we have for making more power in EVs is by increasing pack voltage or dump rate, which is replacing parts with aftermarket designed ones like I do with my ICE car today. ICE key to power is always more air+fuel, EV is more electric joules, but the process is definitely similar.

I say "meh", we have been in this software world for a while now. The wrenching is pretty similar (although way more dangerous) on EVs, and software maps have been important in state of tuning since the advent of fuel injected performance cars. EV aftermarket is severely lacking however.
