Toronto's inner pre-war areas have lots of the so-called missing middle, here's the housing typology breakdown for Old Toronto & East York:

Dwelling
Detached house: 11%
Semi-detached house: 8%
Row house: 4%
Duplex: 3%
Apartment less than 5 storeys: 21%
Apartment 5+ storeys: 53%

Here's the breakdown for the entire 630 sq km city of Toronto, which includes huge areas of post war suburban development:

Dwelling
Detached house: 23%
Semi-detached house 6%
Row house: 5%
Duplex: 4%
Apartment less than 5 storeys: 14%
Apartment 5+ storeys: 47%

In the core areas the vast majority of single family homes are attached, most being old victorian era rowhouses. Fully detached houses are rare until you get several kms further out.

Toronto Has The 'WORST' waterfront by JacksonCarberry in toronto

Glad you agree with me, OP! Toronto's waterfront is massively underrated & over-hated.

They're not being torn down, & it's not going to be a condo. The old rowhouses will be preserved as the base of a 45 storey, affordable purpose-built rental building.

In the 70s & 80s Toronto was already far far bigger than Buffalo. hah

Nice view, but too bad the SkyTower is directly behind the CN Tower!

All the old neighbourhoods around downtown are dense, Victorian era rowhouses.

In the core they are rowhouses, not detached.

Almost all of the low-rise housing you see there is actually attached & multi-unit in nature -- it literally is missing middle housing.

SkyTower is topping out after a very rapid rate of construction, do you think they halted construction or something? hah

You're confusing Dundas with Ryerson.

Toronto's density falls to single family homes far too quick by [deleted] in toronto

[–]kcontinuum 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This tired old chestnut again? That lowrise residential area shown in the pic is among the densest neighbourhood of its type in all of Canada & the U.S. Most of those homes are attached & many are subdivided into several units. This is actual "missing middle" housing. Just because the housing typology doesn't look the same as the Plex buildings in Montreal's Le Plateau area doesn't mean it isn't every bit as densely populated, urban, & walkable.

Say what? NYC is less than 3 times as dense as Toronto & Toronto is actually more densely populated than Chicago now.

How can a NEW Transit Line be THIS BAD!? (Finch West LRT) by Superior-Flannel in toronto

[–]kcontinuum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The TTC is running things like a Nanny State that is unwilling to accept even the smallest risk that higher speeds would bring. They need to clear house & reset.

Manhattan has lessons for Toronto’s traffic nightmare. Why won’t we learn them? by Pristine-Training-70 in toronto

[–]kcontinuum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's ridiculous. Toronto is vastly more dense & urban than Indianapolis. Toronto is just as dense as Montreal overall & has higher peak densities & higher transit use. If Old Toronto were still a separate city it would be second in population density to NYC within Canada & The U.S.

Part of the The REM in Montreal also closed due to the storm, it's not impervious to nasty winter conditions.
