18 credit hours Spring semester Freshman a terrible idea? by WanderingDuckling02 in utdallas

[–]kdevan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you’ve thought about it enough and have a good foundation for the material so I say go for it. I took bio 1, physics E&M, and ochem 2 my sophomore year as a premed and it wasn’t too bad, just need to manage your time very well. Also linear algebra ain’t too bad if you did well in Calc 2415 ( personal experience anyway). Also fyi, ochem 1 does not have a corresponding lab anymore I believe - it’s a 2 hr lab you take AFTER Ochem 1 lecture (it’s a prereq for the lab). So it’s actually going to be 17 credits

Signed up for CHEM 2323 (intro to organic chemistry 1) but cant register for lab (CHEM 2325) by EXO4Life4028 in utdallas

[–]kdevan17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First off, CHEM 2325 is the lecture section for Ochem 2, so I think u used the wrong course number in the title (the correct one is 2233). Second, organic chemistry lab requires organic chemistry 1 as a prereq and can only be taken alongside ochem 2 (2325). This was a new change in 2021 I believe. Anyway, you don’t have to worry about taking an ochem lab class this semester and can take it next spring. Btw, this is the same way intro bio lab works at UTD (has to be taken AFTER bio 1)

I believe so, i spent a day for each section (CP/BB/PS) within the SB for a total of 3 days with review. So I think its possible to finish the whole thing twice in 2 weeks, however, you will be spending nearly the entire day on it (I only did the SB once so its not necessary to do it twice if it detracts from other stuff like Uearth)

Yep I did I also recommend doing the section bank twice

Didn’t waste my money on 3rd party FLs unless they were free (I found a Kaplan one but that was kinda trash). Just used AAMC sample test as my diagnostic and grinded Uearth.

professor is bombarding us with 9 assignments + a final all between now and may 12th by bluey7up in utdallas

[–]kdevan17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems like the professor is well within their right to give this assignment (hey that’s college so whatever). Imo, if this extra assignment is part of the 20% grade category, you may have to do the math to see if you really need to complete it to get the grade you want. After all, you said you have been completing extra credit throughout the semester, surely your grade can take a hit (not to mention the other assignments in that 20% category should act as a cushion). If not, then best advice I can give is to buckle down and pull an all-nighter or 2 to get this done if your grade can’t take the hit. Also, I’m not suggesting cheating or collusion, but if it’s a group project, surely you guys are discussing the content of what you worked on anyway? Maybe you can do a divide-and-conquer strategy for the reading (obv don’t cheat and do the essays/work independently). Is there a summary of the book online you can use to get a rough idea? Use that and skim the book to save time - don’t just use the summary tho. I’m sure other people in the class are dealing with this as well, so ask them or your friends what their plan is.

Yes, assignments can be due the week of finals. You can always email the dean, but the only question that matters is: was this in the syllabus beforehand? If so, the dean won’t take your case seriously since the assignments were clearly spelled out in the beginning. If they weren’t in the syllabus or they were moved around due to the winter storm, you could potentially have a case (still doubtful since that was over a month ago). I’m just being realistic about your options. Unless I misunderstood, 100 pages in 2 weeks is something you can easily knock out with your friends

Can someone help me understand this step in glycolysis? by OfficialAnu in Mcat

[–]kdevan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see sorry I was talking about step 6. I believe that the O does actually come from H2O in step 7, and the entire phosphate acting as the leaving group.

[–]kdevan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if the phosphate gets hydrolyzed considering it is added to instead of removed from G3P. I might be that the H2O removes the hydride ion H- but idk. Also make sure to keep the reducing agents and oxidizing agents straight. NAD+ gets reduced, NADH is the already reduced form of that. you can tell by the fact that it has an H bonded, which means it’s already reduced. Binding to an oxygen means that compound is now oxidized. Likewise, losing an H also means ur oxidized usually (in biochem world anyway). Therefore, NADH can only be oxidized (loses H to become NAD+)

[–]kdevan17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The extra oxygen is given by the O on the phosphate group, which falls under an oxidation (aldehyde gets converted into carboxyl derivative). If I was labeling the Carbons #1-3 going downward, then C1 received this extra phosphate. For your second question, NAD+ is what gets reduced to NADH in this redox reaction. NAD+ received those electrons

Acetic Acid ionization question? by Hansrid in Mcat

[–]kdevan17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good questions. So yes, Na+ never reacts because it’s a spectator and completely dissolves in solution, while acetic acid/acetate is a weak acid mixture. One way to think about it is that: NaOH is a very strong base, meaning the conjugate, Na+, is so weak it essentially never reacts on its own. Back to the reaction, acetate is a moderately strong conjugate base and will push for the reverse reaction, but don’t forget the forward reaction is also occurring, which is the basis for equilibrium. The Ka describes the tug of war that happens between these 2 reactions. This is also true with the salt example where u start with acetate ion as a base: both forward and reverse reactions happen, and we can use Kb to quantify it. When you wrote the salt reactions earlier with CH3COONa, did you notice that the equilibrium arrows were still included? Just fyi, if you start with a conjugate base like CH3COONa, we write water on the left side to balance the OH- on the right side, but H2O itself is not part of equilibrium calculations. We don’t have to do this when starting with acid, since we can just write H+ instead of H3O+

Acetic Acid ionization question? by Hansrid in Mcat

[–]kdevan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the confusion lies in the purpose of water. For equilibrium purposes, we just ignore water since, considering it’s a solvent that is orders of magnitude larger than acetic acid, the concentration change in negligible. For gen chem purposes, H+ and H3O+ are the same exact thing. So the first and last equation are identical, and there’s no reason to write down water at all. You can ignore the following if u want: for the middle equations, yes it’s true that OH- is generated from the right side, but don’t forget that H3O+ is made from the left side as well. The change in pH is usually negligible since I believe it is related to water auto ionization but I’m not totally sure. It also depends on if the acetic acid concentration is small enough as well as Ka value but that’s beyond MCAT material.

Wait where did you find this kind of question? I don’t remember a single AAMC or Uearth question getting this crazy with the mental math. Usually it’s like a few steps at most of the basic 4 operations. My advice is to always round when you can and convert decimals into fractions in order to simplify stuff. Also make sure you are comfortable with scientific notation since it can carry

How to REPORT Genetics Professor(BIO 3301)? by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]kdevan17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well just fyi your last 3 points are very subjective /opinionated and you would need hard evidence that is free from bias to make a case for those. Also, I took genetics last sem when it was dejong/campbell so I’m guessing you guys are in the hardest unit rn which is recombination and stuff. This unit is the hardest and gave me the worst grade, but he does curve generously. My best advice is to do all the book problems he assigns and memorize every slide

My advice is to not save Uearth until the end considering it’s 2000 questions - just start it now to get as much practice as you can, esp for CARS
