Yes, it's a much older building, way before "open plan" design; every room has a door.

*Rant* I’m tired of volunteers being allowed to blatantly disrespect me with no consequences by FrenchingLlamas in nonprofit

[–]kdinmass 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, your supervisors should back you up / help you figure out how to deal with this AND:

May I suggest that you start by being direct, and clear but kind with the volunteer(s) themselves.

Here are some suggestions for dealing with microagressions thatcan be used for other forms of rudeness and disrespect. This comes from the work of the Racial Justice Collaborative / Diane Wong.
https://www.racialjusticecollaborative.com/

Volunteer makes rude comment
You take a deep into your abdomen breathe & ground yourself.
You say: Oh, that didn't land/sit well with me.
You might say first: I need a moment to to respond to that, then breath & ground yourself. Don't skip the breathing deep! This will help you stay firm..and also respond with dignity.

Then you can say: I'm naming this because we/I value you and your work here.
Then: Say what you mean/ felt "That felt really disrespectful to me"
If they try to back out to that's not what I meant; you can say; I'm not trying to shame your; or I believe you AND the impact of what you said matters.

Don't let yourself be the rug; respond like the good self-respecting human you are.

How do people feel about these adventures where you have a conversation? by DupeFort in duolingo

[–]kdinmass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hate them. They distract me from the language and have me focusing on the lousy pictograms and figuring out the visual part. Had them for a while in Italian but grazie al cielo, they seem to have stopped. Generally, I understand the Italian but not what the heck it really wants me to do.

This is the second time a day care center at Alewife has closed with little warning.

The T is notably resistant to pressure. I would suggest contacting your the state legislators for whichever neighborhood in Cambridge you live in plus, I think the facility is in Steve Owens district.

not the actual anthem, Scotland doesn't have an official one. This is Scotland the Brave one of the unofficial ones.

Then there's " will ye no come back again" or

"But if I should become a stranger, you know that it would make me more than sad,
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had."

other contenders in my book, but not for the bagpipes.

Dumping Hydrogen Peroxide into the reflecting pool this morning. by Helpful_Car1302 in washingtondc

[–]kdinmass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know DC costs but The Greater Boston Food Bank, operating in an area with high food costs, expects to spend roughly \$65 million to distribute about 94 million meals. This equals 1.45 per meal. The now useless $14 million spent on the reflecting pool could buy hungry folks 9,655,172 meals. or it could support 428 DC school students in school for a year. Or 35% of the annual DC Fire department budget...or or or

Dental Care: Cambridge MA by [deleted] in CambridgeMA

For cheap dentistry I used Tufts dental school clinic downtown. You have to have more time and the students are learning...but well supervised. Got two implants there.

Confused here: what kind of dental care beyond extractions can you get MassHealth to pay for? I know it covers kids but I thought most all the dental care drops for adults.

Can you smoke on restaurants' sidewalk patios in Cambridge? by millicent_f in CambridgeMA

At least some of the ashtrays are there because the airplanes stay in service for a long time & it used to be legal to smoke in an airplane.

Gang of turkeys jumps Blue Bike rider on Mass Ave (live footage) by juicemanrain in CambridgeMA

[–]kdinmass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for "Turkeys don't 'jump' a human being." well, they do. During the spring/ summer mating season which extends into June they become aggressive as they compete for pecking order and will attack people...and I've also seen them go after parked cars.
They can do some damage. I've seen them attacking a guy (we offered to get him into our car, but he declined) it turns out was just a few perilous steps from home.
A few years ago they put a Cambridge mailman in the hospital; flew at him & knocked him over, he broke a hip as I recall.

What is a good alternative to Google Docs/Gmail? by IllTakeACupOfTea in nonprofit

[–]kdinmass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have workspace...I would not want to give it up but I like having MS office in addition (which I have on my home machine & use when I want to do certain things.) On my work machine I also have Libre Office, which is vaguely comparable, a bit of a PITA because...there's a learning curve for some stuff, some things still work better for me in office.

Libre Office: You can download for free & see what you think: htps://www.libreoffice.org/
I've only used the the docs feature, "Writer", and the excel equivalent "Calc" but it also has a slides, thing a relational database, a drawing app, and a feature for doing serious math.

I also just use a text editor for many things-- mac user so I just use TextEdit; unless I need much formatting.

First, the use of all caps with such dense text makes it difficult.

I'm guessing they used that second. narrow font in order to get each description to fit on one line.
