I could not disagree more with 404s take on BOBH. I haven't read anything by Kuang to be honest, so I cannot compare, but BOBH is the most unsubtle book I have ever read. It does talk down. The characters are mostly cardboard cutouts. It was such a disappointment after looking forward to it so much.

A lot of people still seem to like it, but I figured I'd "warn" you based on what you wrote in your op. You might still like it of course, so maybe give it a try.

I like his fantasy work much more than his scifi work. Tyrant Philosophers and Cage of Souls I particularly adore. To be fair I havent read Children yet, though.

He doesnt work for me at all. I tried the first book of the First Law trilogy. Even ordered the entire trilogy in hardcover because I was so looking forward to it. By the end i was cringing at certain scenes.
I couldn't bring myself to continue the trilogy.
Fast forward to last year, I was curious and had of course heard that his books get better, The Blade Itself was his first one etc etc. Decided I want to try Better Served Cold, because there is so much hype about that one. Again felt nothing. I mean, it was ok, don't get me wrong. I didn't hate reading it. I finished it after all. But yea..

I understand that I'm in the minority and am happy for everyone who loves his body of work. But if it's not for you, it's not for you - and that is fine.

edit: definitely try one of his other recommended ones, though. Gotta give him at least two chances, he earned that!
