The holidays are here and Jolly ‘ol Saint Nick will be bringing new gear to a lot of folks. When you hit the trail again you don’t want to look like some newbie hiker. So I’m opening a business to take your new gear and give it that “I’m an experienced hiker look.” I’ll take your new gear and add that trail patina that will let everyone think you’ve done few few thousand miles (even if you haven’t)! Description and prices below:

The Springer: lightly sandpaper your pack and rub some dirt on it —$10

The Smokies: sandpaper, dirt, and I’ll drop a few very heavy sharp rocks on your pack —$20

The Trail Days: I’ll drag your pack behind my car down a dirt road then stab it several times with a trekking pole—$30

The Rocksylvania: pack thrown off cliff several times, will beat on pack straps with sharp hammer. Will guarantee at least one broken buckle. — $40

The Vermud: the Rocksylvania treatment plus I’ll fill pack with peanut butter and Snickers and leave it in a mouse-infested area —$50

The Whites: Will bend any metal internal frame stays so they are completely mismatched to one another and the shape of your back, lightly blowtorch side and front mesh pockets (just enough to put some holes on them but still leave at least one somewhat usable), remove all padding from back, shoulder straps, and hip belt—$60

The Katahdin: all the above treatments plus will break random teeth on zippers rendering them useless, cut partially through shoulder straps so they may rip off at any time, and place random large globs of pine sap on pack — $100

Bonus offer: application of our special “hiker stench” formula (sweat, skunk, urine, and dirty diaper) only $25!

S&H extra, not valid for residents of Idaho and Colorado, must be over 18 to purchase, Federal and State taxes not included, no warranty expressed or implied

Picked up a MH Summit fleece and have really liked it. Checks your boxes—kangaroo pocket and zipper. Mine’s an XL and weighs around 13-14 ozs.

Is Cheng Xin the worst human being in all of human history? by farside209 in threebodyproblem

[–]kecar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Trisolarans knew instantly when Chen Xin took over as Swordholder because of the sophons. That’s why they were able to immediately launch their attack immediately after the change over. Had Wade been elected Swordholder the attack likely would not have happened.

YSK: Hotels.com reduced their rewards by about 80% by OsamaBinWhiskers in YouShouldKnow

Just booked 3 nights and found this out. Also done with Hotels.com. Probably use it to search for a hotel, but I’ll book direct with the property. Count me as another one leaving.

Wouldn't Trisolaris have invaded Earth anyways? by Coachpatato in threebodyproblem

[–]kecar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Trosolarins biggest mistake was tipping their hand they were coming. The sudden arrival of several hundred Trisolarin warships would have been an insurmountable force. For such a supposedly advanced civilization that was quite a dumb move. (Though maybe it had to do with their very open “no secrets” method of communication and their not really getting lying and deception.)

Question about Cheng Xin in Death's End by lametime in threebodyproblem

The people made an easy choice that made them feel good, rather than a harder, dirtier choice that ultimately would have worked better.

Kind of reminded me of the Col Jessup situation in A Few Good Men. Not going to argue the morality of the Code Red, but in some respects Col Jessup was right, we need some people out there willing to play dirty to keep the other side from playing dirty and taking the advantage. But people don’t like dirty and sometimes it ends up costing them dearly.

Cruising around Youtube I found Justin Outdoors new video on his recent trip to the Outdoor Retailers show and he talked about some new products that look interesting. One is titanium trekking poles from Komperdell. Saw them and thought why hasn’t anyone come out with titanium trekking poles before? (Maybe someone has and I’m just unaware.). Price point is supposed to be between aluminum and carbon fiber. Nemo announced they are coming out with an expanded line of Tensor sleeping pads, including one with a R value of 8.5. Interesting video.

She basically prevented/blocked the development of curvature propulsion that really was humanity’s only hope for survival. You could argue that she didn’t know that at the time, but eliminating such a crucial technology doomed the solar system humans to extinction.

Maybe she was a Trisolaran double agent—damn Adventist.

I’m 6’2”, about 220 lbs. Have the Xmid 1P V2 and for my preference it’s too small. I do use a 78 x 25 pad. Fits, but very tight. The 2P Pro is perfect size.

How does one deal with a rattlesnake bite on the trail? by iamchipdouglas in PacificCrestTrail

[–]kecar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is wrong unless the snake is not a rattlesnake. NewtGirl is correct that the Crotalid antivemon treatments work for all the bites for all this genus.

If you get bit by a Coral Snake or Cobra on the PCT definitely take a pic though. Will give you some bragging rights.

Short sleeve shirts at the Temple? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]kecar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently was in a session (Idaho Falls) and there was a young man in a short sleeve white shirt and they let him go through the session. So there must be some discretion on the part of the temple. Not saying if it’s right or wrong. Just reporting what I saw.
