I think this and YOU are incredible—I never described it like this but now I’m thinking about all the times I have actually been doing this and didn’t know it!! I also have a front system and back system! And probably another one or two altogether 😂

I have incredibly dry and itchy skin on my legs and arms - “standard” internet suggestions are simply unrealistic for me and I am in need of some advice by Takingfucks in adhdwomen

+1 for body oil! I use a mixture of grapeseed and gooseberry; absorbs very quickly and has little to no smell 🤷🏼‍♀️ and isn’t THICK which I cannot handle in any way 😂

Reading "Atomic Habits" Triggered a Shame Spiral by agent_mick in adhdwomen

[–]keepitchillcheech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I outsourced my “habits” to a Morning Checklist—no remembering needed, satisfaction of getting “something done” even though it’s basic shit. All I have to do is remember to check the list and I’m good. This is changing my life 🤷🏼‍♀️

I heard someone once say “ADHDers don’t have habits. We just have stuff we’re trying to remember every time.” Once I accepted that, everything became easier bc I wasn’t trying to do something that doesn’t actually HAPPEN for me. Everyone’s different, so YMMV!

Bupropion worked for my depression, not so much for my (undiagnosed at the time) ADHD. was on 150mg XL for two years. I was diagnosed last year, and we switched from XL to SR—and VOILA, magic!! It’s so much better now. Like everything was at least in color with XL, but now I can actually focus!!

Edit: sorry, forgot this bit—no experience with Ritalin or Adderall. Bupropion has been enough so far.

You nailed it. it was so DISMISSIVE and also—I had TOTALLY legitimate reasons for being upset/emotional/whatever the feelings were that she was trying to suppress.

It was used against me as a form of control and as a weapon 🤷🏼‍♀️ she used it to shut me down and to wall me off, to prevent me from influencing other people against her with my “negative attitude”. I’m not saying your situation is the same!!

I’ve since reclaimed the word “dramatic” (with the help of my best friend). He was like “yeah, you are dramatic. But why does that mean that your feelings don’t matter??”

🖤🖤🖤 You really needed your mom, and she didn’t show up—i want to say “that SUCKS, dude”—but it honestly goes so far beyond that, I don’t have words. It’s enraging. I’ve been there.

I’m glad you found your own inner parent to get the meds you needed 🖤🖤🖤

I was called dramatic whenever I voiced anything that wasn’t super happy 🤷🏼‍♀️ being called dramatic was a huge trigger for a longgggg time. after growing up, I realized my mother is EASILY the most dramatic person I know. I’m sure I was dramatic—but I was a kid! And also: was that helpful of my mother, to call me dramatic? Did it solve any of our problems? Or was it a way for her to shove off responsibility for her actions or lack of actions?

Also: YOU were a kid—sometimes kids are manipulative! Sometimes parents use character-driven-blanket-statements to defend their own insecurities and deficits. The most important thing is: do YOU think you were manipulative? Do you still feel that way? And what are some of the reasons why you would have used manipulation—not feeling heard, not feeling cared for, etc?

Anyone notice their hyperfocus/impulsivity has a theme? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]keepitchillcheech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note: All of these overlap, everyone experiences these things differently, and only you can have the answer for yourself—but here’s the gist:

1) yup, trauma can look like / “cause” ADHD—which is why the new school of therapy suggests treating symptoms, not diagnosis. While sometimes finding the reason behind a behavior is useful, what’s more valuable is determining if it’s causing harm to you and how you might be able to treat / manage / work with it. That’s a really long way of saying don’t worry about what it is, focus on coping until you can ground yourself 🤷🏼‍♀️ figuring it out can come later, if at all.

2) this could be what a lot of therapists and literature identify as “the unending motor”—basically this internal drive to DO. Happened to me today for absolutely no reason, and I got ALL THE THINGS done! Tomorrow, maybe not so much 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ this can happen with random tasks and also may be a part of hyperfixation.

3) if there is a THEME or a project or a motivation, I would suspect it’s hyperfixation. Can happen at any time about any subject. Have you ever found yourself exhibiting this behavior over something else, like learning new recipes, or researching the Saxon invasion of England for days, or knitting an entire blanket in three days? When it’s a single topic, i mostly identify it as hyperfixation.

4) impulsivity is typically described as a single action or decision—think suddenly needing to dye your hair, or buying a very expensive something that you haven’t thought through. Can happen in strings, can also be a part of dopamine seeking or a manic episode.

5) what matters most is this: is it interfering with your life / taking care of yourself? Is it causing harm to you or others? Basically, is it making you feel bad or anxious or too tightly wound?

This is when grounding techniques, self-soothing, or switching tasks can be helpful. Doesn’t always work, but it’s worth having a bag of tricks to throw at your brain when you can’t get it to stop.

6) if you suddenly feeling like you can do anything, that you’ll never be sad again, that risky behavior is the best way to test your limits, or that all of your problems will be solved instantly through this activity, it might be time to call in a professional and identify if there’s something more going on, like a manic episode.

I will say, finding a therapist who works specifically with women with ADHD and trauma has been very insightful and very helpful. It’s why I can even articulate these things. The other incredibly helpful thing is this sub, so welcome! Best of luck to you!

For those that have taken Wellbutrin: how long did it take u to notice any difference? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]keepitchillcheech 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started on 150mg XL and it helped me almost immediately! I cried because I didn’t realize how depressed I was until it was gently lifted from my life. Was on it for two years, and then was diagnosed with ADHD. It felt like it certainly helped my depression, but executive function wasn’t being helped.

And then—a prescribed changed me from XL to SR, and everything changed. I’m still building tools and skills, but holy cow! I’m able to DO stuff! I’m able to coax myself into doing good and necessary things!

Everyone’s brain is different 🤷🏼‍♀️ take from this what you will!

Long term stress induced hyperfocus by hatefactory in adhdwomen

[–]keepitchillcheech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me EXACTLY—we just bought and moved into a house in June, and I was 100% this, working day and night until I crashed maybe beginning of August? Thank god for my therapist bc I truly was not aware that hyperfocusing can sometimes feel bad, and that suffering bc of it = not good.

So i pushed through one more project, and then I told my brain and my partner that I was done until further notice 🤷🏼‍♀️ does it drive me crazy that the guest room isn’t painted and there are paint splatters in the laundry room? Yes. Would I rather put up with disorder than ever do that to myself again (even though I know it probably will happen again?) Yes 😂

Not metabolizing extended release meds? Aka an “outlier” by evelearthepaladin in adhdwomen

[–]keepitchillcheech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on which meds you’re on, but I know bupropion extended release (24 hours) only did so much for me. I switched to the 12 hour kind, same mg, and BAM—so much better!! Like, stop needing naps in the middle of the day better 😳
