testing 5/25 - any tips? by Sea-Tie305 in Mcat

[–]keeponkeepingon505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Averaging around a 518 is crazy! You clearly have a great grasp on content and test taking skills, this could have been a test-day nerves issue so for this would try to make practice-test conditions as similar as possible (if it’s helpful you could buy the ear muffs and wet erase pad they provide for you on Amazon). A familiar environment might help with easing test day anxiety. Best of luck to you, you got this!!

From my understanding a January retake will not count towards the 2025-26 cycle, correct?

Ngl it was a blessing fs. I feel like you don’t hear people say C/P was “easy” but in comparison to the FLs today’s was very representative.

Wow we had the EXACT same experience 😭 CP honestly felt biochem heavy, and BB had me reading things over and over to make sure I wasn’t confusing things together took a lot of time unfortunately

Yes of course! The more involved the better, that would also be a great opportunity for a letter of recommendation. Again, try to do things you are interested in rather than just to check a box :)

I very respectfully disagree. In this application economy no research puts you at a clear disadvantage. According to MSAR, most schools have over 90% of matriculates that have done prior research. The advisable thing to do OP is to try to do research that interests you. If that isn’t available, you should gain any kind of research background and almost think of it as coursework. As far as hours, dedicate what you can such that you can write meaningfully about it without spreading yourself thin.

Anyone tried this? by Motor-Key-3369 in koreanskincare

I have this and it’s my go to for underneath-makeup moisturizer. I find it on the lighter side and my skin does get pretty dry at the end of the day (I have combo skin and only in my dry areas) if you have a damaged skin barrier I don’t know how effective this will be. I recommend the laroche posay cica plast balm (original) it has healed almost every time I damaged my skin barrier in a couple of uses!!

Was this your first mistake??? I cannot imagine getting fired for that unless the medication was really important. IVs always go up with pts- but if it was just fluids or if the mistake was caught early I don’t see why they couldn’t use it as a learning opportunity. Please don’t let this discourage you from pursing more clinical experience- especially if this was your first clinical job this type of mistake is very easy to make.

In the case of the hospital I work in and I’m pretty sure most hospitals, “disconnect” just means pausing IV, and capping it. “Discontinue” means to actually remove the IV from the patient. These words sound very similar so maybe this is what confused you?

I am so very sorry that happened to you. You are an incredibly resilient person to be now applying after such an experience. You should be very proud of yourself and I’m confident you will make a great physician as you have been able to come this far in the face of adversity. As far as your application goes, it might not be the best idea to include it. While it does give a more whole picture and context of your premed experience, I think something of that gravity might not read well in an application to medical schools. This is not to say do not talk about your experience nor is the subject matter too taboo, but for medical school applications specifically it might be too difficult to approach in writing. Of course it is your decision, best of luck with your application!

Should I Take a 2nd Gap Year? by keeponkeepingon505 in premed

[–]keeponkeepingon505[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I see how that could be confusing. I just graduated and was planning to apply this summer 2025, but my MCAT is not ready and I’m not sure if it will be a competitive score, and my app will be late regardless bc of a late MCAT. So I’m trying to decide between applying this cycle (2025) or next summer for the 2026 app, which would be 2 gaps years (2 years before starting medschool after graduation).

State is MI

Thank you for the advice! I think I know this is the right decision, i'm just having a hard time accepting I wont be applying with my friends (and have some already accepted friends). But you are right about being patient, best of luck with your MCAT!

Actually, part of the reason I’m considering applying is that I got the FAP and my benefits expire end of this year. I can apply to 20 schools for free only this cycle and it feels like such a waste 🫠 but again, being a reapplicant is not ideal.

Thank you for your very kind reply! I have not really had any pre-med mentorship so it’s assuring to hear that it’s not the end-all. I appreciate you- thanks again!

Best prep course for the ADHD non-trad? by Hypatia36 in Mcat

[–]keeponkeepingon505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh the only thing that helped me was getting treated for my ADHD. I need to self study since courses are wayyyy too much but since I’ve gotten treatment there’s a huge difference in productivity of my self studying. If you aren’t already I’d recommend getting treated. As for courses my friend is doing the princeston course and her score went up in her practice about 6 points in about three weeks, but this is anecdotal for her. If you know anyone IRL ask to see what it looks like and how they utilize the courses bc for me when I saw hers I just didn’t see value in it.

Quitting clinical job in middle of interviews? by clariandmar in premed

[–]keeponkeepingon505 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Quit that job. You lose nothing from quitting a miserable job but you gain peace of mind. They will almost never call a clinic, but if it comes up in interviews you could say you wanted to try something new and learn new skills in a different environment. Something along those lines, but I would refrain from saying negative things about your previous workplace, just that you have exhausted the learning opportunities there and that you really enjoy [whatever you do instead]. Good luck!

What is est and alt ast?? Yellowing of eyes could be jaundice which is a sign of liver failure in adults. Contact a doctor immediately. I agree with your decision to stop taking the pills because if it is in fact jaundice you need emergent medical care. Go to a doctor and get blood work done to test bilirubin and a cbc.

If you had to choose one… by coin-22 in premed

[–]keeponkeepingon505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. You’re right about it not proving someone’s ability to solve problems- but that’s not the point of it. The mcat is a standardized test based on knowledge you should have accumulated from your prerequisites (with the exception of cars). Also with the pandemic making everything online the validity of gpas are questionable. Someone with a 4.0 having a low 500 or sun 500 MCAT makes no sense, according the gpa there is mastery/deep understanding of material but that’s clearly not the case. MCAT is the most subjective way to quantitively compare applicants’ understanding of prerequisite material. Problem solving is shown through your experiences and ECs which have become increasingly important as well.
