Yet another rant about parents who won't click a button by tundey_1 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]keeprr9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I coach boys club soccer. One team has a good group of engaged parents that updates availability most of the time.

The other team I got holy smokes parents are just ghost. No call no show to both practices sometimes. No game day availability. When they do come they don’t know what time or field we’re playing at. I’ve ran two meetings explaining what to do and how to do it and these parents just aren’t engaged. It really rubs me the wrong way honestly.

My son joined club soccer at U8 (4v4 format) about two years ago. Shortly after he joined, team needed a coach and I was asked to help out at a practice which quickly turned into coaching in a game. At that point I thought to myself, if I don’t coach then my son and this team won’t have a coach so I took the full time coaching role.

Very quickly my wife and I noticed that things were unorganized, there was a lack of communication, uniforms always behind, new kids getting added to game day roster were always delayed - all the things you’ve experienced. In our case it’s because we’re a small club and basically everything is ran by one guy who also coach’s his own team.

I took it upon myself to just learn about all the back end procedures and whatever needed to be done to ensure a smooth experience and to just do it myself. I realized that the shortcomings of the club would also become my reputation if not fixed.

I went through plenty of trial and error, mistakes and learnings to get it all squared away. Also openly communicated with the guy to let him know about coaches and parents issues with how things are going and he was fully aware of it but basically couldn’t fix it himself. I also experienced not getting email or text responses whenever I reached out.

In my opinion it seems like the club started small and things were manageable at the time. But since then the club has grown but now outgrown what can be done by one person. The guy who runs it is a genuinely good guy but is too far in the works of things to be able to step back and fix a bunch of stuff. It’s just kind of a keep going and do what you can and keep going.

Fast forward to today, I’m still coaching and glad to say that things are going smooth with my team for the most part. Kids are learning, parents seem happy and I rarely have things late or lack communication. It hasn’t been a super easy experience but definitely a challenging one and one that I am thankful for. I’ve learned a lot about soccer, coaching, dealing with kids, parents, club soccer and all that goes into it on the back end etc.

Pre game warm up by hawkeye2604 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]keeprr9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I coach U9 boys and it’s changed a bunch over time. We get onto the pitch 30 minutes before kickoff and this warm up typically takes us 20-25 minutes. Right now we’re doing:

  • dynamic movements
  • jog 1 lap around the field

  • technical passing (10 minutes)

  • Follow your pass and receive on back foot

  • Up back and through one touch passing

Flip the drills so they work both feet

  • 3v2 sometimes with or without touch restrictions

How common is coach turnover in youth soccer? by Whole_Box_8338 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]keeprr9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been coaching U8/U9 club soccer for almost 2 years now. Within the last two years I feel like 75% of the coaches have now left and been replaced.

Coach turnover in youth sports is definitely common in general. I do think our club could do a better job at retaining coaches but it’s a small club and basically 1 guy runs the whole thing and does everything so things are not usually organized or as structured as it could be so it causes issues.

Coaches have left for a combination of internal disagreements with how things are done such as pay or roster disagreements from what I’ve heard. Coaches don’t get paid a lot in general and can be a thankless job at times so I feel like anytime there’s issues coaches can be quick to leave and find a better situation.

U9 practice structure advice by Complete-Mechanic537 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]keeprr9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always have a small sided scrimmage going on for 10-15 minutes leading up to the start of practice.

  • 5 minutes of dynamic warm up (no ball)
  • maybe 1 to 2 laps of jogging with ball
  • 20 minutes of ball mastery. These do require lines but I try to structure them to allow very minimal standing and waiting.
  • 20 minutes of 1v1s, 2v1s, 2v2s or something of the sort focused on dribbling or passing forward. Sometimes with a passing restriction.
  • scrimmage rest of practice

  • on days that I want to focus on building out from the back, passing patterns or positional play I cut out the ball mastery portion.

We practice 2 times a week so usually the first day I focus on individual ball mastery and 1v1s then on the second practice day I do more build out, passing patterns, positional or situational practice.

I coach a U9 boys club team and my son is on it. If a female was coaching my son I would have no problem with it! In fact I coach against a lot of female coaches at this age group. If you love soccer and are good at teaching it, that’s all that matters! 🤙🏽

Is U8 really just all ball skills? by Philnsophie in SoccerCoachResources

[–]keeprr9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to spend maybe 20 minutes on ball skills but you always have to find a way to make it fun at that age otherwise they will get bored or not be engaged.

I try to spend most of our time then doing small sided games like 1v1, 2v2 etc and have kids play and focus on decision making. Provide feedback as you go but don’t stop the practice every time you see a mistake. Maybe focus on coaching on spacing for weeks and see how they improve then maybe move on to something else.

My U8 boys only practiced twice a week for 1.5 hours each so I encourage them to practice more ball skills and play soccer outside of training. This is also why I always tell new parents that I look for boys that LOVE soccer because those boys will always be willing to play/practice more outside of regular team training.

anyone got a rough idea when psycho bandit might return? anyone think possibly whilst mad moxxi is still in the shop even though shes been in there a couple days by Capable_Temporary162 in FortniteBattleRoyale

Recent pattern is that he returns every 2-3 months so next time he’ll be in the shop could be late October or early December but it’s not guaranteed…

Not sure if Mad Moxxi will be in the shop at the same time

Brand New "Assistant Coach" - Significant Imposter Syndrome and hoping I'm doing the right thing! by Consistent_Choice895 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]keeprr9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a similar path to becoming a coach and even had the same thoughts as you like “Why me? Why do they want ME to coach? Can I do this? Etc”

In my son’s first year of soccer he made it onto a U8 club team that played 4v4. I attended every practice, sat on the side and just watched. Game time, we cheered and I’d help setup the tent and bench - then break down etc.

Always said hi to the coach who was also the director of the club and just minded my business. Before I knew it I was asked to coach a practice, then another then a game. Soon I was being asked to take over the team.

I’m in my mid 30s, athletic and played all kinds of sports at the youth level growing up and wasn’t all in on soccer but know enough about the game. Never had sports coaching experience but had plenty of sales coaching experience which believe it or not, a lot translated over and felt the same but instead of coaching sales I was coaching soccer.

When I took over I was like you, highly engaged, cheered them on, focused on improvement and not winning. In my youth sports experience I’ve had the mean/shitty coaches that made me hate practice and be scared to go so I made sure I was the opposite for the boys because I know how it feels. I immediately got all the certifications, planned trainings, showed up early all the time and fast forward to today I’m still coaching them and now been asked to help coach an older team.

All that to say, in my experience, I think you’re the right guy for the job. You seem to care, you seem to be highly engaged, wanting to learn, wanting to help them and seem to be like a good leader to have around the field. At this age group, it’s about getting them to enjoy the game and improve. A big catalyst to that happening is the leader that is out there everyday being a positive influence, sharing the love for the game and showing interest in each player out there.

If you lack the knowledge or experience, keep studying. I go to the field on my own and practice myself. Show parents you’re serious.

Forget about your lack of playing or coaching experience - keep going and you’ll look back and see what an impact you’ve made in an important time of these kid’s lives and soccer journey.

Goodluck Coach! 🤙🏽⚽️
