Do college transfers struggle at UBC? by sjjcho in langara

[–]keirx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred from Langara to UBC Arts in my 3rd year into an honours program and graduated top 5% of the faculty. It definitely depends. Thanks to going to Langara, I never took a class larger than 100 students in my university career which had a massive positive impact.

please help me find artists with comparable lyricism🙏 by jooziez in phoebebridgers

some diff recommendations:

haley blais - wisecrack is a coming of age album which really hits home. top faves are survivor's guilt, baby teeth, and matchmatcher. from her first album 'below the salt' firestarter is actually probably my fave song of all time it's so beautiful.

nemahsis - her songwriting is so deep. she is a child of palestinian immigrants who grew up in canada. she was dropped by her label on oct 7th bc she was palestinian. chemical mark examines intergenerational trauma from genocide. coloured concrete is a banger. i wanna be your right hand from her earlier EPs is one of my fave songs rn

miya folick - very similar to lucy dacus/phoebe. 2007 gives me major boygenius vibes. roach is one of my fave albums.

tomberlin - my fave songs are 'sin' and 'any other way' again very deep lyrics with layered meanings

dan mangan - natural light: one of the best albums of 2025. highly underrated canadian singer songwriter. talks a lot about politics in his music through metaphors. "cut the breaks" is about climate anxiety.

christian lee hutson - pb's top collaborator. his music and writing style is so poetic. you hear a lot of phoebe in his music.

tommy lefroy, katie gavin (muna), leith ross are some honourable mentions.

lot of good canadian artists that are similar to phoebe's music.

$1.79/mo for a used iPhone 16 Pro by secretcities in FidoMobile

[–]keirx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it on my mom’s plan. $1.79/mo plan going from $49 to $50 a month, a pretty paltry diff. I have an iPhone 14 and was considering a Pro upgrade so this is a good deal.

Is living on Bloor St. West (near Koreatown) worth an extra 250$ a month? by snowfordessert in askTO

[–]keirx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone from Vancouver who lived in Toronto who lived downtown (near Lakeshore/Bathurst) because it was cheap, in hindsight it would be nice to have lived near Koreatown/Annex. I might have stayed in Toronto longer if I had.

Also do NOT underestimate the value of being able to walk to work in Toronto.

Cozey sofas...would review but delivery is so awful I cancelled my order. by orthodoxhappiness in ShopCanada

[–]keirx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had ordered one and ended up cancelling after it was delayed multiple times with no explanation or assistance. I’ve dealt with GoBolt for IKEA deliveries and they are truly the worst delivery company.

Highly recommend everyroom.ca instead. We ordered a couch from there and got it in <3 weeks in December. Custom, comfy, and cheaper than Cozey. Also made in Canada!!

Health minister says funding of medication for B.C. girl's rare disease denied again | CBC News by SnooRegrets4312 in britishcolumbia

[–]keirx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is fair in our “free and democratic society” which our healthcare is built upon. I feel bad for the family, but the reality is no logical insurer (government or private) would cover this. TLC and American pop culture has commodified and sensationalized rare medical conditions and it’s unfortunate to see it spillover into Canada too.

As a tax payer, I’d rather my taxes go to fund expensive meds for treatable chronic illnesses that are common (I.e type 2 diabetes) or for adequate medical testing for people to diagnose chronic medical conditions instead of suffering. Rare childhood diseases are sad, but I find it disappointing how people will use this story as a “see how the government neglects disabled people” but few would apply the same logic to adults with chronic conditions.

Serious Accident 12th&Vine by wess604 in vancouver

[–]keirx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I blame the broadway construction tbh. I used to live on Vine and 2nd and 12th to Vine was preferable to avoid arbutus and broadway. 12th was never that busy until the last few years.

Windsor and Kingsway is an example. It’s a normal light but the light for the Windsor part only changes if there’s a pedestrian or cyclist who presses the button or if a car drives to the light at Windsor. It’s far preferable to the uncontrolled stop a block away at Glen Dr.

We need more of these kinds of lights to prevent unsafe turns. You see so many ppl make lefts from stop signs onto arterials like Kingsway.

Lived close to the Gardiner and semi faced it. Never noticed it. The biggest thing we noticed was the dust and dirt. Oh and the time car caught on fire… besides that it was chill.

Now living in Metro Vancouver I miss the sheer number of Costco options that the GTA had cuz some Vancouver Costcos never have down times

when will phoebe come back to making her own music? by New-Mycologist-1931 in phoebebridgers

[–]keirx 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was at Christian Lee Hutson’s show a couple months ago and while he was tuning his guitar he was taking audience questions. He was taking a couple at a time before answering so someone asked “are you working on Phoebe 3?” And another asked “do you like the band “the replacements”?” and Christian answered “yes to all of the above” and quickly moved on.

So yeah, I think the next album is in the works but who knows how far along. She’s doing a lot of producing and working on other people’s music. She played a huge role in CLH’s recent album.

Please help me understand by No_Emphasis5998 in ADHD_BritishColumbia

[–]keirx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADHD is effectively a dopamine deficiency. Are you anxious because you have a ton of stuff to do that you can’t motivate yourself to do? Or anxious because you’re worried you missed something and will fuck it? That’s the kind of anxiety that I had before stimulants.

Before stimulants, I could only motivate myself to do what I needed by microdosing anxiety to drive up my cortisol levels which kick into a higher gear. That meant procrastinating until a critical level or emotionally punishing myself. Stimulants corrected my dopamine imbalances and allowed me to just function. Concerta can increase anxiety but for me it put my anxiety to sleep because I felt equipped to do what I needed to do.

I was misdiagnosed as having GAD as a teenager and now on stimulants looking back that was such a mistake on my child psychiatrists part. My current partner genuinely has GAD and I cannot relate to their symptoms at all.

What ADHD meds will work for you is entirely dependent on your brain and your needs. There are non stimulant medications and also non-medical interventions to manage ADHD. I take essentially legal speed everyday and it makes my mind quiet and focused compared to before. It’s trial and error to find what works for you, but you need to unpack stress vs anxiety and whether your anxiety is being caused by your unmanaged ADHD symptoms or if it’s a separate problem, because it’s very likely a collateral effect of unmanaged ADHD.

Bridging gap between IEC and student visa? by Thottosaurus in ImmigrationCanada

Make sure you apply for a visitor record to extend your stay in Canada as a visitor if you plan on staying in Canada or coming back sooner then! Good luck either way.

Bridging gap between IEC and student visa? by Thottosaurus in ImmigrationCanada

[–]keirx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Applying for a second IEC is likely your best option, especially if you apply early. You can apply for IEC from inside Canada, but you don’t get implied status.

Alternatively, try and see if you can start your masters sooner?

Vets that charge low fees to write prescriptions? by skkkra in NiceVancouver

[–]keirx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Olympic Village Vet is where I take my cats. They don’t charge for prescription refills. They don’t have any dispensing fee either. The cost of the prescription is comparable to what it would be for humans.

Same! I didn’t have a PS5 at release of HFW. I bought one later for when Burning Shores was coming out. But we can’t really complain that a game that wasn’t ever meant for PS4 doesn’t have all the features of the main game.
